Weekend Nuggets: International Phish

Osaka 2000

Listening to Prague ’98 this week inspired me to dig into the international archives. I’ve dug up two stellar show, continents apart. The Osaka show from 200 features a creatively demented “Down With Disease” that may be the greatest jam that nobody talks about from Phish’s prolific run in the Pacific. The first set “Ghost” brings another dark-horse highlight from a show that took place three stories up in a massive shopping complex, (the second show of Japan to take place within in an elevated shopping plaza!)

The second selection comes from the transformative tour of Summer ’97, and the band’s gooey, raw funk is on full display throughout. The second set brings the heat from start to finish, bookended by thick explorations of “Wolfman’s” and “Ghost.” Have a great weekend!

Jam of the Weekend:

Bathtub > funk > Gin” 7.10.97 I

A relic from Marseilles, France in early Summer ’97; back when tapers tracked “funk” jams, and Phish grooved unmercifully.

    Goodnight BB

  2. gus Says:

i think there’s a good chance shrine could come out of a jam…kinda like tomorrow’s song last fall. that was great.

  3. garretc Says:

    Night BK

I would have answered you Party Time question, but I don’t know any songs off of Party Time, so I refrained…

    Have a good Saturday evening!

  4. ChefBradford Says:

    garret- Party Time

Party Time, Alaska, Windy City, In A Misty Glade, Gone, Only A Dream, The Birdwatcher, Let Me Lie, If I Told You, Splinters of Hail, Can’t Come Back, Shrine, Liquid Time

you know some of those I’m sure

  5. KWL Says:

the BB is great (no one has ever said this before, so let me bask in my originality for just a moment).

I started writing a blog recently mostly for my own purposes, to get in the habit of writing regularly and to help work out my thoughts, and the BB definitely provides some stimulus and spark to get the old brain working.

and the BB also provides a kick ass soundtrack for said contemplatin’, from miner’s downloads, to people’s mediafires, to links to & recommendations of shows & albums & artists i’m not familiar with.

These are only 2 of many reasons why the BB is great. bravo, BB. pat yourself on the back.

  6. KWL Says:

never heard the 4.2 island tour soundcheck before (it is linked on nono’s spreadsheet a few pages back). holy shnikes is that the funky stuff.

  7. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

id like to hear only a dream and birdwatcher (tab or phish style)

  8. lastwaltzer Says:

    whats your blog KWL

  9. ChefBradford Says:

Apparently I’m in the minority, but I love “If I Told You”

    sue me

  10. lastwaltzer Says:

Chef, I was just thinking the same thing. I’ve said I liked that song quite a few times only to hear ……crickets……….. I really think they could do something cool with it out of an ambient jam

  11. garretc Says:

Well, when you put it that way Chef, I do know a few of those songs!

Thanks for making a liar outta me!

  12. ChefBradford Says:

Garret, I cheated and pulled open the Joy Box. As an album it doesn’t really hold up. Individually, as songs, fantastic

lw- that’s what I’ve said before…something spacey, dissolving into “IITY”, into something, something triumphant maybe…Theme? Idunno

    I like it

  13. ChefBradford Says:

I’ve mentioned this before, too, but the song is so obscure it mainly drew blanks here (crickets, if you will): jam>Glide II>jam, a la Mike’s>Glide II>Week, or whatever

don’t know Glide II? Go to Phishshows.com, dig up the “other” list, or whatever it is, and rummage through the Billy Breathes outtakes. or, go to the Voters for Choice Benefit show (first show of 95? ten debuts I think), and check it out

    soft, pretty tune, mantra-like lyrics

  14. ChefBradford Says:

5/16/1995 Lowell, MA, Voters For Choice Benefit

Don’t You Wanna Go*, Ha Ha Ha*>Spock’s Brain*, Strange Design*, Reba, Theme*, Lonesome Cowboy Bill*, Free*, Glide II*, YEM, Sweet Adeline, Sample in a Jar

    E: I’ll Come Running*>Gloria*

    i’m still here!

up still writing a shitty final paper for a shitty sociology class.
    plain shitty.

  17. KWL Says:

^sorry that island tour soundcheck is 4.3, not 4.2

@lw, currently the blog is not public (no one has read it but me so far, it’s kind of unnerving to let other people read your writing)… I would change it and give you the url, but my backwoods internet is so slow that i cannot even access my own blog, believe it or not. all the control panel pages don’t load…

i’ll be on a faster connection tomorrow when i head down to the office (to watch the masters online-ha) so i’ll change the settings & send you the addy then.

i’m also planning on writing something about phish soon, so when i do that i’ll set it up so you can click my handle to see it. don’t worry Miner, i won’t be in direct competition with you 8)

  18. garretc Says:

    Hmm, I like it Chef!

    As if I wouldn’t like a Phish song…

    But still, very nice!

I could see that going places…

  19. garretc Says:

Haha, when I read @Whole Tour’s comment, I thought it was mine for a second based on the colors of avatars!

  20. whole tour! Says:

    ^ llfa

you in no way whatsoever want to be associated with this all time shittiest sociology paper ever written.

i’m writing it extra bad because the professor really blows chunks. chunks i say.

the mor epainful for her to read the better.

make her feel the torture of chalkdust collect on her tongue.

  21. whole tour! Says:

three days into it and i only have 3 pages out of 10.

  22. whole tour! Says:

    who’s got my 7-4-10 extra?

  23. ChefBradford Says:

wt- only 7/4 I have is the only one I can find, for lawn

    who’s got my 7/3?

  24. whole tour! Says:

    we have a conundrum chef…

    i have a lawn for 7-3….and i need anything for 7-4
and you got 7-4 lawn and need 7-3 anything

    the yin and yang

  25. ChefBradford Says:

    Well shit.

I anticipate us both showing up to our ticketless shows, and getting better tickets than we have for our ticketed shows

    jeez, I hope
