Weekend Nuggets: International Phish

Osaka 2000

Listening to Prague ’98 this week inspired me to dig into the international archives. I’ve dug up two stellar show, continents apart. The Osaka show from 200 features a creatively demented “Down With Disease” that may be the greatest jam that nobody talks about from Phish’s prolific run in the Pacific. The first set “Ghost” brings another dark-horse highlight from a show that took place three stories up in a massive shopping complex, (the second show of Japan to take place within in an elevated shopping plaza!)

The second selection comes from the transformative tour of Summer ’97, and the band’s gooey, raw funk is on full display throughout. The second set brings the heat from start to finish, bookended by thick explorations of “Wolfman’s” and “Ghost.” Have a great weekend!

A relic from Marseilles, France in early Summer ’97; back when tapers tracked “funk” jams, and Phish grooved unmercifully.

    Hey Corey,
We are out for all three. We should set up a meetup, perhaps at one of the two brewpubs right near campus, Jupiter or Triple Rock, something like that. Don’t know those places, but I know they will be full of phans.

I shouldn’t get too excited yet, though, a whole summer before then.

  2. whole tour! Says:

raleigh is always kinda empty…that place is pretty big. The lawn is huge there.

    they always throw down there.

in 2003 the second set from raleigh was awesome.

  3. ChefBradford Says:

I was planning on waiting to see how my $$$ works out before getting tickets for Raleigh and C-ville, but if reserved seating is still open, I may bite the bullet. If I can’t go, I’ll gladly drop the ticket to someone here

  4. m00nshake Says:

you should definitely go, ChefBradford… might be a very intimate show with the lack of ticket sales.

I have seen Phish just about every time they have played Raleigh WC since they started in summer 1994. My memory isn’t so good anymore but from what I do remember, the lawn always had a fair number of people. I don’t remember ever seeing it where the pav seats didn’t at least sell out. There was one year that a heavy rain storm came through prior to the show, and I remember wandering around thinking of the possibility of a tornado touching down and ripping through the parking lot at any moment. I can’t remember what the lawn scene looked like that year, but I can’t imagine it being too pleasant, the grass turns to mud quickly after a hard rain like that. I don’t even remember anything about the show. I remember being there, though, and I still have my ticket stub.

Oh, I saw Ween last week in Winston Salem at the Millenium Center. It was a lot of fun. I don’t know if any of you guys like Ween but I have enjoyed their music for quite a long time, and they put on a good show.

  6. SillyWilly Says:

    BK loves Ween.

I saw Gene Ween here in Madison in February. He was entertaining. I don’t know much about Ween or their music. It was a solo acoustic set.

  7. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

Haha, funny that I just come in as the Ween convo starts up. Great live band, yes. The show last night they closed with a 19min LMLYP with like 40 women from the crowd dancing on stage. Nuts

  8. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

I need to grab some of the AUDS from their recent tour, setlists are looking a bit nutty. Spinal Meningitis->Feedback Jam->Captain looks interesting enough.

  9. SillyWilly Says:

That sounds nuts. Were you there, BK?

  10. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

I have a question for you BB’ers who have been to MPP to see a show before

In searching for pavs online today, I found someone selling 2 Right Loge MM seats for $82 a ticket for night 2. Would I be able to see/hear the stage well from here? I just don’t want to pay too much over face and I want to get decent seats too. Just trying to figure out how much money I should drop on tickets seeing as I am trying to hit both nights. I hope I don’t sound picky or something.

I’ll continue to look around on StubHub and those sites to see if I find anything. Seems like every site that says “We beat the competition” seems to have the exact same prices.

Anyways, thanks for the help all

  11. Lycanthropist Says:

    what up Silly and BK

how goes it with you cats today?

  12. SillyWilly Says:

    Im good, Lycan.

just drinkin’ some beers, watching the Masters.

    how have you been, man?

  13. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

Silly – No I was not, but I have seen pictures and that is generally what happens during that tune anyway. Gener leaves, they jam for about 10-15mins, and a bunch of young women from the crowd get up on stage and dance and shit like that.

My friend saw them in October of 2007 and he got one, and he couldn’t see the stage once everybody got up there. I really hope to catch an LMLYP next time I see them.

  14. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

    Hey Lycan!

I’m doing alright. About to head out to shower/start getting done a whole bunch of work due next week

How’d the “Superjam” go last night?

  15. SillyWilly Says:

    That sounds pretty fun, BK.

definitely cool to get the crowd involved like that.

Good luck with your work, dude.

  16. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

    Yeah, no doubt

Well have a great day Silly/Lycan, I’m out to eat and then get some work done

  17. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

personal jam of the day, 11.29.98 simple. i dont think ive heard this jam in years and i didnt recognize what it was back then. but this shit it great

  18. Lycanthropist Says:

I have been good.. staying pretty busy this weekend.

Watchin some of the Masters here and there, thinkin I might tune in now for a little bit..

Superjam went MUCH better than expected BK…

it was a pretty great turn out and we nailed some pretty solid grooves.

Had a lot of fun and put a free show on for all the local music supporters in town in the process!

  19. SillyWilly Says:

    Thats really cool, Lycan.

Im assuming that’ll be up on internet archive soon?

  20. Lycanthropist Says:

no unfortunately no recording for the Superjam

  21. SillyWilly Says:

wait. i think i hear the echoes getting to Madison right now.

    sounds like it was hot

  22. Lycanthropist Says:

it was a nice mix of musicians from all the local bands in town

  23. SillyWilly Says:

That sounds like a great night.

was it a lot of different styles then, too?

@bk: I don’t specifically recall what MPP’s PAV area looks like, but those seats are in the last row (as I’m sure you looked up). That part seems fine, but being so far over to the side would likely impact the sound quality -that would concern me. I usually don’t like those extreme side seats, unless I knew I would be able to roam around (which I assume won’t be a good option for you and your Dad/guest).

You have a right to be picky, btw, but only so far as it matches your price point & comfort demands. Good luck with the hunt!

And don’t forget Stubhub adds on extra fees as opposed to ebay

  25. voidboy Says:

I would try ebay for tickets… not a bad way to go. Scored my Fest 8’s there last year.
