Weekend Nuggets: International Phish

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

Osaka 2000

Listening to Prague ’98 this week inspired me to dig into the international archives. I’ve dug up two stellar show, continents apart. The Osaka show from 200 features a creatively demented “Down With Disease” that may be the greatest jam that nobody talks about from Phish’s prolific run in the Pacific. The first set “Ghost” brings another dark-horse highlight from a show that took place three stories up in a massive shopping complex, (the second show of Japan to take place within in an elevated shopping plaza!)

The second selection comes from the transformative tour of Summer ’97, and the band’s gooey, raw funk is on full display throughout. The second set brings the heat from start to finish, bookended by thick explorations of “Wolfman’s” and “Ghost.” Have a great weekend!

Jam of the Weekend:

Bathtub > funk > Gin” 7.10.97 I

A relic from Marseilles, France in early Summer ’97; back when tapers tracked “funk” jams, and Phish grooved unmercifully.

“Ask yourself this one question (I do it every day)
Is there anyone else you would rather come home to at the end of a long day? Someone you just cuddle up with under a nice cozy blanket and chill with?
If that answer is your wife…things will be all good!
Sorry, I don’t mean to preach and I don’t know everything.”

This I feel is really good advice!

  2. kayatosh Says:

@lw: to clarify, my coffeemate is of the green variety, not the nasty chemical stuff.

I grind the premo beans myself, brew, and add a touch of 2%. nothing else.

  3. kayatosh Says:

    code, indeed. it’s all code.

  4. EL Duderino Says:

    @ kayatosh

It’s also the equipment he uses. All of it is top notch and his sound/editing station is of professional grade.

There are people in the community that do these things with inferior set up/equipment, because they enjoy it as a hobbie. CM is a professional. Hell even Rhino consults with him.

You could say Charlie is the cat’s meow!

That is good advice. However, my lady’s great and all that, but i’m running out of strength and desire to continue worshiping at her altar.

  6. kayatosh Says:

@el dude. interesting. you had to figure c.miller was the best of the best technically speaking. and he clearly loves the GD. That doesn’t hurt either.

  7. kayatosh Says:

“Is there anyone else you would rather come home to at the end of a long day?”

maybe that’s my problem. i work primarily at home. I’m always f’in here.

  8. EL Duderino Says:

    @ kayatosh

    I only grab Miller’s.

Unless one is not in circulation for that particular show.

Now we got the 4/12/78 this morning which is very sweet.
You’ll find his AUD’s are superior as well. Prime example were those TAB Greek Theater shows I posted here 2 days ago. Those fuckers sound so nice!

  9. BingosBrother Says:

“That is good advice. However, my lady’s great and all that, but i’m running out of strength and desire to continue worshiping at her altar.”
Good for you dude. If you don’t stand up for yourself, no one else will. 2 times a month? Doing her a favor? Tell her you’re gonna go do someone else a favor. Kids will be gone before you know it and who are you left with for the next 40(hopefully) years? You are just as important and should be treated as such.

  10. EL Duderino Says:

Sounds like you need some guy time or a hobby that’s away from the house.

  11. Robear Says:

    during the Island ‘Twist’,

it’s Fishman that creates the alternate universe with his otherworldy rhythm’s.

someone send Fish a copy of the Island videos. We need THAT guy in a dress, back behind the kit. it’s hard to imagine it’s only four guys. you have to see it to believe it. they way they had mastered and could blend effects in ’98

  12. kayatosh Says:

all good suggestions, peeps. thanks. @el dude: that’s why i was seriously contemplating going on tour. get away; drop for a show or two; meet you dudes in person and reconnect with what lit my fire back in the day. Then the guilt of leaving my lovely wife shorthanded w/ 2 youngins overrode my wanderlust.

@ el dude, i only grab miller’s too. the seal of quality.

music rec: 11-07-2008 marco benevento trio with fishman and reed mathis. mathis is one of my favorite bassists.

now we’re talkin, 11-26-97 tweezer just shuffled in. yes!

  13. lastwaltzer Says:

@kaya, thats what I thought. There is no better morning combination.

  14. kayatosh Says:

@bingosbrother: nice. she is worship worthy — tall, fit, attractive, young looking for her age — but it’s gettin to be a drag.

  15. Andrew Says:

My kids are 3 and 5 and the sex life definitely waned for a while. One thing which helped to rev her back up was an understanding on my behalf – Men have sex to relax and unwind, whereas women need to be relaxed to even think about having sex. I started to lay groundwork and do more to ease her stress levels and over time she began coming on to me again at random intervals. I can’t tell you how many times during the first few years of child-rearing that sex was always my idea, it became very frustrating.

  16. kayatosh Says:

right on, waltzer. truly a magical combo, unlike texas medicine and roadhouse gin. never mix those (see stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again)

  17. kayatosh Says:

@ andrew. thank you. “I can’t tell you how many times during the first few years of child-rearing that sex was always my idea, it became very frustrating.” that’s exactly it for me.

  18. BingosBrother Says:

Go Kaya Go! Absence makes the heart grow fonder. That line is famous for a reason. Getting away for a few days is no reason to feel guilty. My kids Fathers Day gift to me was being happy for me that I was at a Phish show. Brother, Wolfmans Brother took away all the guilt for BingosBrotha.

  19. kayatosh Says:

when I have to be the instigator of the sex, it makes me feel needy, even guilty, like i’m imposing. takes a lot of the fun out of it. yet, i still want it b/c i am passionate and i also like the “relax and unwind” aspect of it.

    peace

11-26-97 tweezer — check it out. it goes places.

  20. Robear Says:

next time the kids invade the bed, grab your wife and head to the couch, @ Willowed.

kind of exciting. honey, we can’t wake the kids…..

    Island ‘Mike’s’ + wake and bake = 🙂 saturday

these stories remind me of my marriage. sex became another job. sheesh.

  21. Mitch Says:

just read everything from last night before i get started on the weekend.

some funny stuff in there. i cant wait to meet mrs willowed now.

see you guys at jones beach.

  22. Dr. Pronoia Says:

    @ Wife and T-shirt post:

So last night, after a good double date during which a lot of phish was discussed, we came home and popped in the 4.5.98 DVD that Mitch had graciously sent us earlier in the week (thanks again man).

I’ve seen most of my shows with my wife and phish was a major factor in our courtship and early years, but she’s got some wicked ADHD, and about 8 minutes into that DWD she said, “this is my nightmare…I’ve got to go to bed.”

After some merciless teasing, I finally agreed to let her go, but not before she agreed to wear a T-shirt at our one show of the summer (Saturday SPAC) that reads: [front] I’m a Type 1… [back] type of girl

So come on BB T-shirt gurus, whose got my heady wife-embarrassing T for this summer?

  23. Mitch Says:

im at work. island mikes banage. JEALOUS!

  24. kayatosh Says:

Thanks for the encouragement, bingosbro. it’s exactly what i need. I’m not exactly the bold, shoot first and ask questions later type when it comes to committing to shows.

My buddy in Chicago has suggested i fly out for the tour opener and there’s also DC and alpine in the vacinity of that Chitown bud and his brother in Bloomington, my dearest friends.

  25. Mitch Says:

    dr p,
you could make that in 5 mins on cafe press for prob 20 bucks. cafepress.com
