Weekend Nuggets: International Phish

Osaka 2000

Listening to Prague ’98 this week inspired me to dig into the international archives. I’ve dug up two stellar show, continents apart. The Osaka show from 200 features a creatively demented “Down With Disease” that may be the greatest jam that nobody talks about from Phish’s prolific run in the Pacific. The first set “Ghost” brings another dark-horse highlight from a show that took place three stories up in a massive shopping complex, (the second show of Japan to take place within in an elevated shopping plaza!)

The second selection comes from the transformative tour of Summer ’97, and the band’s gooey, raw funk is on full display throughout. The second set brings the heat from start to finish, bookended by thick explorations of “Wolfman’s” and “Ghost.” Have a great weekend!

A relic from Marseilles, France in early Summer ’97; back when tapers tracked “funk” jams, and Phish grooved unmercifully.

I rationalize not seeking out phish shows by the ready availability of awesome audience recordings. I recreate the phish show in my living room a few days after the actual thing. the energy’s not the same, of course, and it’s a little lonely, but the living room show is often better for careful listening.

I’m still 50/50 on if I like going to shows with the gf. She likes phish, had seen them, etc. before we were seeing each other – 5 years total. 1 year of Phish. She’s just a little more needy when it comes to the show. Example we went to SPAC with a few of my friends last summer. Got a good spot on the lawn. After the downpour (we had sweet waterproof blanket cover), right before the set she needs to go to the bathroom. I don’t go with her, show starts. I’m having fun but about 4 songs into it, I start to get worried that she’ll get lost. About 15 minutes more goes by and my phone buzzes. She is indeed lost and wants me to come find her. I have to make my way through the crowd on the hill, eventually find her and then go back down the hill with her in tow, which was a pain in the ass and I still feel bad for bumping some people on my way back to the spot we had. (although, Fuck some of the people for getting upset at us stepping on your precious blankets so we could get back to our spot). Anyway, the point of it being that all the other times, I’m usually just with a few friends at shows and we all can take good care of ourselves, or if they leave for the whole show, I know I’ll find them after, etc. I really love her but I think I like going to shows by myself.

That said, we did have sex last night before bed and this morning before I had to come into work 🙂

According to my wife it is a hormonal thing. The drive just isn’t there as much as it used to be. Sweetness and doing chores around the house turn her on these days.

I was 29 and my wife was 35 when we had the first.

  4. Andrew Says:

You can plan and imagine and read everything about how to be a parent, but the instant your first child comes into this world, an unimaginable feeling bubbles up inside of you and transforms you into a parent. Indescribable but very real.

  5. willowed Says:

    Nice work Joe!!
I love sex in the morning before I come to work. I also like to leave the stank on me so I can swipe it with my finger and smell for the rest of the day.
    Ok now……I will be quiet.

  6. kayatosh Says:

so funny to be talking kids/parenting as Trey solo acoustic 10-23-2008 comes up on shuffle for me.

mid bathtub gin, trey stops playing and announces that gordon is at that very moment having his first child. trey dedicates the last refrain to “David Human” the placeholder name Mike had given his baby at the time.

    this Island ‘Paug’ is wrongdicculus

  8. kayatosh Says:

“It is easy to bring kids in to the world, just difficult to make the sacrifice to raise them the right way. I am becoming more confident in the ability to make the sacrifice, and still be the person I am, and want to be.”

^^^^^ major wisdom . you got it.

  9. Mr.Miner Says:

@ El Dude. Can I just go to one place to browse all these C.Miller releases. I never grab em during the day, but there are some I’d love, as my GD collection is lacking…..

  10. BingosBrother Says:

    Willowed = Mary Katherine Gallagher
Mike = one weird MF. David Human? So strange for some reason.

  11. EL Duderino Says:

“Kids are sensitive creatures Kaya. You have to do something for yourself once in a while. If you’re happier, they’re happier. If you’re stressed out, it passes on. Think of it that way. Plus, it’s PHISH!!!”

This is also really good advice!

  12. Mr.Palmer Says:

How is the sound and such on the back of the lawn @ SPAC? My wife is going to this one with me. for now, we have lawn seats. However, my wife doesn’t do well in cramp claustrophobic situation.

Joe’s situation above is exactly what will happen to me. I don’t mind chilling in the back by the beer gardens w/ her. If that’s what is more comfortable for her. Plus, after much discussion, she’s pushing me to stay Sunday solo and rage on Father’s Day. I’ll feel a little guilty, not seeing my kids and all, but they are young enough that i can convince them that the prior Friday is Father’s Day.

  13. kayatosh Says:

@joe best show experience is when you go alone or go with peeps who you have no obligation to. always tough going with someone who causes you to think, “I hope they’re diggin it.”

  14. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Miner

Are you a member of Workingman’s Tracker or Lossless Legs???

They always end up on bt.etree eventually if your not but those 2 other sites are where it’s at IMO.

  15. willowed Says:

We will rage kidless on Sunday together Mr. P!

  16. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Miner

Send me an e-mail with what dates you’d like to have.
If they’re not up I’ll gladly send them to you as a thank you for all you do for us.

  17. kayatosh Says:

miner: i recently grabbed GD 2-7-89. highly recommended. for whatever reason, 89 is my absolute favorite post-coma GD yr. and probably in 3rd place behind 73 and 72.

  18. Corey Says:

Alright, who IS the user and WHY did he/she take that Japan video down?

Always wondered the reasons for those kind of actions. If not the band, then who?

Re:kids Younger brother has 4 boys. My wife and I are “in negotiations.”
I’m 36 so I better get crackin’, right? We’re both musicians and teachers for a living — in our minds, that means this journey could be both easy and difficult on any given day. The career paths become harder to traverse, that’s for sure.

  19. joe Says:

in the balcony that night guys? if so, we’ll see you there!

  20. willowed Says:

Maybe we can take some L and start thinking about our families while we are raging at Spac. We’ll get all emotional and start talking nonsense like…
“I remeber when my kid did this and that”
    and I will be like
“Holy shit man, that happened to me too”
Then we can sitdown and have a good cry

  21. kayatosh Says:

@corey: 4 boys! yikes. i was one of three boys. we’re all in our 30’s now, but it took its toll on our folks — dad’s dead and mom’s crazy.

  22. willowed Says:

    That was at Mr. P

  23. willowed Says:

    That’s a pretty heavy toll Kaya……jeeesh.
    Thoughts are with you brother

  24. Mr.Palmer Says:

“Maybe we can take some L”

I actually have a pretty sweet single Pav for that night. right in front of the sound board i think. It will be a good day, for sure.

  25. willowed Says:

    Listening to the 4/4/98 Birds…..whhhooooaaaaaa
