Weekend Nuggets: International Phish

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

Osaka 2000

Listening to Prague ’98 this week inspired me to dig into the international archives. I’ve dug up two stellar show, continents apart. The Osaka show from 200 features a creatively demented “Down With Disease” that may be the greatest jam that nobody talks about from Phish’s prolific run in the Pacific. The first set “Ghost” brings another dark-horse highlight from a show that took place three stories up in a massive shopping complex, (the second show of Japan to take place within in an elevated shopping plaza!)

The second selection comes from the transformative tour of Summer ’97, and the band’s gooey, raw funk is on full display throughout. The second set brings the heat from start to finish, bookended by thick explorations of “Wolfman’s” and “Ghost.” Have a great weekend!

Jam of the Weekend:

Bathtub > funk > Gin” 7.10.97 I

A relic from Marseilles, France in early Summer ’97; back when tapers tracked “funk” jams, and Phish grooved unmercifully.

  3. joe Says:

one last thought for me re: gf. We are best friends, get along 99% of the time and go to a variety of events where I don’t feel the same way as I do about the Phish show. I think that it has something to do with going to all of them unattached (never dated girls into phish and didn’t try to force it) since 1994. Kind of got me into a routine about it and I like to enjoy them in my own headspace I guess. The only other thing I don’t want to share with her is golf. Luckily, I don’t go very often anyway so the 3-4 times a summer I go I don’t have to explain why I don’t want her coming with.

  4. lastwaltzer Says:

note to self: don’t go anywhere with joe if I may get sick or lost

oh wait i already wrote that one

  5. Corey Says:

@kayatosh — My brother does the lights for the likes of Gwar and other loud raucous bands. He’s away for months at a time. You can imagine the lack of maturity and responsibility that those 4 boys demonstrate. His wife is overwhelmed. He is a 34yr. old diabetic. They live in a way too small house but are not in a position to upgrade. Their situation started on the wrong foot (first couple kids outta wedlock, that sorta thing). I think Mr. P mentioned earlier about coming over to his house and seeing his brood — keep you away from baby making for another year. Well, I second that emotion. I go to their place and I’m good for at least another 6 months…

But, I love ’em all. And despite the incredible challenges they face on a daily basis, they’re still a family, making it work…somehow.

  6. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Miner

I’m sure you know about db.etree.org right?

Punch in the band name and date and look to see if there is a Miller available.

Sometimes there are more than 1 Miller for a show. If the shnid# is larger, that either means it’s an up-grade from him or a pitch correction and or a fix.

  7. joe Says:

now relistening to 10/30/09 set 2. Steadily climbing up my list of 09 and has got me looking forward to hitting the movie.

  8. lastwaltzer Says:

laughing my ass off thinking about willowed and mr.p tripping out on their familes at SPAC, AWESOME 😉

  9. willowed Says:

    Kaya
C Zero follows me from show to show. That and Caspian.
Each time they start Zero I am like “son of bitch, here we go again”
Once it’s over I always leave very very satisfied.
It’s one of those jams that you say to yourself…shit, I am not a fan. Once it’s over your like….that was fucking redic.
Here are a few other that fall in theat category for me:
    Bug
    Theme
    Taste

  10. Lycanthropist Says:

    good afternoon BB

    happy weekend

Kaya – I see you have already gotten tons of advice… but if i could say one thing. It seems like it has got to the point where you MUST openly discuss your concerns with your lady or not only will you be pent up with sexual energy, but your resentment level will rise and that combo can be dangerous.

  11. Mitch Says:

    joe,
obviously taking your girl to a show requires more work and a little less paying attention. i plan bathroom trips for setbreaks like the rest of us. girls who arent as into it as we are do not do this. but its still nice to have lady vibes at the show. “too many meatsticks, not enough mounds” classic AW comment, or soam or one of the snarky fellas on here.

    miner,
i get the little travel gold bonds. have yet to find the green one in that size. next one i empty, i’ll refill from the big green one. gotta see how that stuff works.

  12. willowed Says:

    Crying like little babies……
Remember that time Keegan shot sweet potato baby formula out of her nose…..that was funny
    Booohhooooo Booohoooooo Booohhooooo (water works)

  13. Corey Says:

@willowed — llfa at your comments the last few days.
That diaper joke was, in a word, wrong. 🙂

I don’t care for Character Zero — it is a zero in my book — nor do I care for Sample In A Jar.

Having said that, I will now see those two tunes at every venue this summer:

    Hartford
    Great Woods
    Finger Lakes
    Greek
    Alpine

  14. willowed Says:

It tingles mitch. it tingles just right!

  15. kayatosh Says:

    @willowed. same here. totally agree

@corey you’re an observant fellow. i wish your brother luck. that story makes me feel better about my relationship with my kids. maybe they’ll grow up for the better, having had dad around and (usually) conscious and engaged.

  16. SillyWilly Says:

    howdy howdy howdy

    great looking saturday.

    2 great DsOTD

    and the Masters on TV.

    and beautiful weather.

    how are you all?

  17. Corey Says:

El Dude, have you actually seen 496 shows!??!?!

That, my friend, is commendable, trophy award winning stuff.

  18. Mitch Says:

    llfa

” but they are young enough that i can convince them that the prior Friday is Father’s Day.”

way to use their age to deceive them. haha

  19. willowed Says:

We are all very emotional today Silly
    boooohoooooo booohhooooo

  20. kayatosh Says:

@lycan. yep. resentment. that’s basically it. i know it’s immature, probably unjustified, but that’s just how i feel.

  21. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Corey

Thats not my show list but my tape/date list.

I have not done the Phish/db.etree list yet.

Working on GD and Jerry right now.

You can click on my name and see the tape list so far

I’ve seen 118 shows thus far.

  22. SillyWilly Says:

    @Willowed

I saw some sex speak earlier.

Just a question: Being 23, I want to do it ever second of every single day. Is this ever going to go away?

by the way, whats the birds and the bees?

  23. Mr. Completely Says:

    @kaya

“yep. resentment. that’s basically it. i know it’s immature, probably unjustified, but that’s just how i feel.”

    Neither immature nor unjustified.

You are a man and you are who you are. You deserve to be happy. This is not a trivial thing and you are not being unreasonable in the least.

And yes your kids are better off with you around. My $0.02 as child of absent father.

You deserve better. I hope she comes to that understanding.

  24. willowed Says:

    Here’s a quick recap:
    Kids
    Marital issues
    Sex
    sig. others at shows
    gold bond
    GWAR

  25. Mr. Completely Says:

“Just a question: Being 23, I want to do it ever second of every single day. Is this ever going to go away? ”

hasn’t changed for me yet at 41

    gets easier to modulate though

    yoga helps
