    Thanks Silly

I definitely will try to do that. I try to read as often as I can but it is hard with school/friends to juggle around. I will definitely be reading a whole lot this summer. It’s just that the idea of art, literature, music, philosophy, etc really interests me. I never fail to be amazed at the wide range of perspectives people have on many of these important subjects.

Many of my peers don’t share the same interest in that stuff, but I definitely know a couple of people who do; and those are the people who I tend to have these types of “deep” (sorry if I sound pretentious) discussions with. I will definitely be trying to make some new friends some time in this coming/next year (I’ll keep the ones I already have of course)

Thanks again for the kind words. I really try to engage in some of the “deeper” conversations on here without being too “annoying” in the constant questions and everything. I am glad that somebody recognizes this and welcomes my questions (not that BB hasn’t) I definitely will continue to look into these types of things

That is an interesting observation – that 3min songs were made for cheap/mass production to be sold to the public. I agree with this statement. Not to say that a 3minute song can’t be good, it surely can, but the very idea of pre-packaging something as special and precious as music (one of the highest forms of creation and art in my opinion) for mass production is wrong.

Music is a very precious thing, that takes time and heart, and that is why I am hoping that mainstream music eventually gets back to what it can be. Of course, mainstream in itself is typically made for fast access to the public, without matter of quality or “soul” put into it. So maybe the “real” music is just beyond the surface, hiding in the shadows waiting for its time to shine. There are many many examples of these bands, and some even reside on this board, and that is the reason why I want to be a musician. I want to experience what those people playing music experience. And by that I don’t mean the drugs/partying, not THAT experience, but just the overall feeling of creating something, and having that creation enjoyed by other people. That is the ultimate form of giving back, for of all of the times music has brought me happiness in dark times the very least thing I can do is give some of that feeling to somebody else, even if it is just one person

I am rambling once again. I guess Silly has ignited some sort of “spark” in me to think today llfa.

I guess I too am going “deep” now. 🙂

I’m going to grab some food, later folks.

I’m a sucker for these types of convo. Often times I feel I don’t have much to contribute regarding phish because my live experiences are minimal and I’m not good at analyzing music.

@Silly, you are very respectful and inquisitive when you go off on these topics, which are very endearing traits. Don’t stop now.

@BK, you should definitely follow your intuition about creating music because the feelings you described are what it is all about for the artist. That is why I build furniture and I get the same feeling when I put my heart and soul into creating a piece that will be enjoyed by people for years to come.

Nothing is uniquely original since everyone who creates something has been profoundly affected by their environments. And collectively judging art isn’t really necessary since the only thing that matters to our personal experience with are is how it makes us feel. Individualy we will determine what we like and don’t like. For me, great art is something created with a pure intent. When I view or experience it I feel good, real good. That artist has connected with me. Bad art for me is lifeless, it feels dead and it probably was created for reasons other than true expression of ones imagination. And of course there is an aesthetic value that is purely subjective. There are rules in the natural universe that govern art structures like proportions, colors, and musical theory, so if art doesn’t follow these rules it will probably fail from an aesthetic perspective. But even still bad art is good art to someone and me too if it carries the soul of the creator.

Re: The Maker- it is the sound of Jerry when he’s at ease. He’s not pushing it, not reaching at all, just playing.

  14. locust the lurker Says:

    re: the Maker

Great tune. Written by Daniel Lanois and covered beautifully by Jerry in the later years.

  15. Lycanthropist Says:

    evening BB

just got back from TSU rehearsal and enjoying a break before moving on to a CF brainstorming session.

Looks like art has emerged as the dominant topic today

  16. locust the lurker Says:

I’m curious, Lycan, what are TSU and CF?

  17. Lycanthropist Says:

    Teen Spirit Underachievers

    Cobain Forever

  18. Lycanthropist Says:

    ha ha just kidding

they are my two bands This Side Up which is a funk fusion band
and Chance Fisher which is a rock and roll band with our fair share of improv

  19. Lycanthropist Says:

Defining what makes art better then other art is a tedious and almost futile effort

However the very act of trying to decide elevates certain pieces of art amongst the mass consciousness…

The more that art is perceived the more shape it takes due to outside interpretations therefore making it a stronger piece.

Wether reactions be positive or negative for that matter.

  20. Lycanthropist Says:

to listen for yourself check here:

  21. locust the lurker Says:

Thanks Lycan, I’ve heard you talk about CF on here and will give it a listen. Appreciate it, man.

  22. Lycanthropist Says:

I’ll let Silly or BK or anyone else who wants to chime in suggest some particular shows for you Lurker

  23. SillyWilly Says:

you’re in for a treat, locust.

  24. Lycanthropist Says:

i think from here on out I am going to refer to my bands on this board as Cobain Forever and Teen Spirit Underachievers.

I was even thinking about changin my handle to Fake Kurt
