I also like Chance Fisher 3-4-2010

  2. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

@ Mr Palmer – glad that Apple was able to hook you up. You are welcome for the tip.

Re: The Maker. That was the encore at my first Phish show. Might be the only time Phish has ever played it (not checking the stats). Combo with DMB on 10/16/94.

    @ Mr. C – it’s been way more than 4 or 5 pages. Where’d you go?

  3. Lycanthropist Says:

i guess the most recent shows should be the best theoretically right? 🙂

  4. BTB Says:

I to am thankful to JoeKolby for that GD mix. I don’t know my ass from my elbow when it comes to the GD catalog or where to start, but I trust the October 1972 should do me well. Burning it now!

You guys talking about Night Ranger and Poison covers are cracking me up. Growing up in NJ during that time, makes me automatically a fan of that kind of music. If I could show you guys pictures of my big ’80s Jersey hair. BTW – would love any hairband cover.

its because I love that Medicine Daughter>He’s Gone run…i keep going back to it.

remember when we talked about the color thing…I get the coolest color scheme going on in my mind during those8 songs.

I dont know much about music, but I can tell you those songs make me feel good.

  7. Lycanthropist Says:

yeh theres no doubt that there was something very special going on in the room that night during those runs..

AFter He’s Gone it gets too much to be about featuring the guest and loses some of the magic from earlier…

  8. lastwaltzer Says:

@silly did you end up getting any of those discs?

  9. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I think there’s a part of mr that fears truly liking the GD because of my obsessive nature with collecting things I love. 325 Phish shows cataloged and i want at least another 100 plus all the future shows. Lord help me if I ever fell in love with the Dead. I’d need to live ’til I’m 110 to get through it all. I know this shouldn’t be a reason not to enjoy music. Just the way it is.

It’s like the old story about how the guy got tired of sleeping around so he settled down when he found one he loved. Well, the same can be said about Phish. I can still look at other bands – just can’t touch.

  10. fat bastard Says:

marshall you will love the dead. there’s no two ways about it. honestly maybe start with “in the dark” and “workingman’s dead” a lot of people say there albums don’t resemble their live music but those albums are all GD

  11. SillyWilly Says:

haven’t yet. I have rewards points from a database we use at school. I’m waiting for my redemption to process to actually get the itunes gift cards.

i’ll let you know what i think when i finally get the music.

    Hey Lycan!’

    How you doing tonight?

    Cobain Forever top shows:

    3-4-10 (STELLAR!!!!!!!)

    Teen Spirit Underacheivers top shows:

Really solid shows in all of them. Honestly I would go into much more detail and highlights but I am pretty tired and you can find them in another post anyways I am sure

    Regardless, enjoy!
Lycan – hit me up. Love the new band names LLFA

  13. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I own American Beauty, In the Dark, Live Without a Net, Workingmans Dead, Terrapin Station, Europe ’72, and Shakedown Street.

  14. Robear Says:

Cobain Forever’s first LP ‘Bad Nirvana Cover Band’

  15. cal Says:

Oops, thought I hit “submit” before supper…

Planning on heading back to MKE after Yeasayer, SW, but it’s always nice to have an option just in case.

If you’re scheduled to work ’til noon on the Thursday of DC, you’re calling in sick.

locust–I second the Cobain Fever 3-4-2010 show. My fave of Lycan’s work I’ve heard so far.

Lycan–I don’t think I ever got around to telling you what I thought of 10-24-09…First of all, if you were gonna do a Nirvana cover, I can’t believe you didn’t pick “Mr. Mustache”!

Other than that, I dunno if you saw my post at the time…but “Manitoba” is definitely my fave CF tune until further notice. Another awesome version here. Definitely dig “SitW” as well. “Crepes” is outstanding as well, and your piano outro to “Umbrella” is another major highlight. Not as keen on the “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin'”…Solid show overall, not as good as 3-4.

  16. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

All the bands that played at my fraternity house in college (early 90s) were cover bands who played mainly Dead songs, plus The Band, ABB, Dylan, Willie, etc. I enjoyed it all. Saw two Dead shows (’91 and ’95). I’ve listed to American Beauty, Terrapin Station, and Live Without a Net hundreds of times. But I’ve never fallen in love with them. I’ve accepted it’s just not my thing.

  17. Mr.Palmer Says:

I’d say you’ve given it a fair shake there, Marshall.

  18. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

    I love Old Town Manitoba

The transition from Sun Guy->Old Town Manitoba in 3-4 set I is basically seamless

The 10-24 Manitoba gets into some deep clav funk near the end. Gotta love it

  19. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Beauty is truly in the eyes and ears of the beholder.

  20. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Well, not all the bands. DMB played out our house and I don’t think they covered any Dead or ABB.

  21. fat bastard Says:

yeah i guess there is two ways about it…brown eyed woman, cumberland blues, el paso, mexicali, ripple, those are the songs i fell in love with.

  22. Mr.Palmer Says:

The Grateful Dead Movie soundtrack is pretty sick though, if your looking for something you haven’t heard yet.

  23. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I loves Janes Addiction’s tribute cover of Ripple more than the original.

  24. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

But I’ve never been a big fan of folk or Americana, which are the roots of the GD. So it’s not surprising that I haven’t found IT in the GD.

  25. cal Says:

BK–thanks for the further recs, btw. Gonna check out 11-29 next…still haven’t heard the song “Lycanthropy” yet, I think I’m due.

Not Tom–thanks for driving away Mr. C. That cat was nothing but trouble. I foresee an El Dude/aw-style confrontation next fall after you guys meet at the Greek and you tell him to keep his filthy mouth shut around your grandma.
