Ten Tunes For Friday

12.3.09 (W.Rogell)

Don’t look now, but it’s almost May! Summer tour sits but six weeks away. Until then, we’ll continue celebrating Fridays with Ten Tunes. This week’s playlist features diverse selections between ’93 and 2000. Enjoy the jams and the weekend!

Tweezer” 12.31.93 II

I hadn’t spun this “Tweezer” in a while – wow! A top-notch jam that opened the second set of New Year’s Eve features some straight up funk stylings fused with the balls-out energy and precision of ’93 – a devastating combination.

2001 > David Bowie” 10.27.95 II

This deep dive into darkness features a furious opening half with Trey speaking in tongues, before the band resets the jam halfway through.

7.31.09 (G.Lucas)

Split > Buffalo Bill > Makisupa > Rift” 10.29.94 I

This ending of the first set features some point-on improv and great transitions from the band in their last show before Halloween. (We’ll count this selection as two songs.)

Ghost” 11.11.98 II

While the “Halley’s” gets most of the attention from Van Andel ’98, this second-set closing “Ghost” is one of the best of the tour.

Stash” 8.28.93 I

This first-set version from Phish’s tour finale features some mind-bending, full-band interplay.

Bathtub Gin” 9.29.00 I

The impressive first-setter gets into some infectious grooving, offering, arguably, the best jam over the band’s last Vegas stand before hiatus.

Free” 11.9.98 I

This chunky first set version from UIC 98’s third night became an instant classic.

Reba” 12.7.95 II

A phenomenal version from one of the stronger shows of December ’95.

YEM” 6.9.00 E

On Japan 2000’s opening night, Phish dropped this swank, laid back encore in Tokyo.

  1. Exree Hipp Says:

I believe the composed section of that 12/7/95 Reba is done in about 2/3rds the time it normally takes. They play it INSANELY fast, and then deliver one of the great jam segments ever for that song, imo. Great, great version.

  2. beepaphone Says:

Well myself and roughly 15 or so others were the first to catch Phish 3D in the state of Indiana.

The film was rockin’, but no-one showed up. Catch this one Friday or Saturday night, folks. A crowd would have made all the difference.

  3. garretc Says:

Gosh, have I ever mentioned that music (in general) is god damn amazing?

I love it. It makes my life.

One could even say “It’s a fucking miracle”, if one were so inclined…

I, for one, am just gonna stick with a nice simple “Thank you music, for existing!”

    Have a marvelous Friday everybody!

  4. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

one of my favorite tweezers ever that 6.9.00 one. and im excited to hear this bathtub i haven heard yet. and the reba. yum

  5. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:

    morning folks!

just got back from phish 3d, I dragged a newb with me (although he gat hooked recently) he loved it, so many songs he didnt know and now loves, and
a few others he knew and spotted right away.

Only 8 of us in the city of Tampa! moved all around the theater
searching for the sound *my recomendation*
sit on the last row of the “floor”, once u get into the incline of the theater,
the surround sounds just as loud as the main front…
Overall Mike could have been louder, maybe the sub at the theater didnt
    do justice to his frequency….
I missed the openning credits while bane was taking place outside complete
    with hash browns MMMM breakfast!

My buddy loved it, it melted his face, never heard the tapes but he could tell
that there wasnt any out there moments from what he saw
I liked it a lot, a crowd would’ve been nice… it brought me lots of joy!
sound was very good, 3D was very nice… a bit rough towards the beginning

    **** stars

  6. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:

    wud up purps?!

  7. garretc Says:

No @stu, the night is young!

Glad you had a good time at 3D! Gotta see if I can work out a trip to the cinema myself here…

  8. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:

    4am here son!

  9. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:

    im out
    gotta work at 9
    peace GC

  10. McGGGGG Says:

that 11/11 Ghost is one of my all time favs! Yes the Haley’s is great from that show but that Ghost just explodes. They need to bring back the full frontal, rock-god ghost like this one once and a while to catch people napping on the funk groove.

Also the whole Aquarium Holiday Tour of 93 was amazing, I think a 4 show box set of that run would be sweet!

    Happy Friday !

  11. Willowed Says:

Hey Boys. It’s friday! Close out the week by going balls deep!!

  12. Willowed Says:

So I have my routine every morning. I wake up…bagel….iron a shirt etc…
Threw this song on while I was ironing. Goose bumps.

  13. Willowed Says:

The guitar at the 1:27 minute mark.
    Makes my hair stand up!!

  14. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Glad to hear the favorable reviews. I’m going tomorrow night at 10:00 pm and taking a noob with me. Expecting an empty theater.

Golf today. 85 degree high. Gonna be awesome.

    Make it great board!

  15. Willowed Says:

Enjoy the Golf Marshall. what a day for it!

  16. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Phish played on two Islands back in the Spring of 1998. I hear they were pretty good.

  17. amazin1986 Says:

Wow, 12.31.93 Tweezer, haven’t listened to it in 10 years. Trey’s drops some crushing notes before the meltdown. Very underrated NYE show.

  18. Mr. Icculus Says:

awwww nothing better then showing up @ work on Fri. with 10 straitght fire tunes. Thx as always Miner

  19. ohhphee Says:

    Good Morning everyone!

Haven’t been on in a minute. Busy times at work, but it could be worse.

Just wondering if any of you chi-towners are going to the 10 pm showing of Phish3D tonight at the Roosevelt Showplace ICON. I know many of you have already seen it, but on the off-chance that any of you are still going, I wanted to say hey before the movie.

And as always – Thank you Mr. Miner for the fat tunes for fry-day.

  20. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    mornin’ all
thanks for yet another great ten pack, miner

so last night I was watching a little bit of the Wattstax movie (1972 concert in LA Coliseum) and during a commercial break I caught the trailer for Phish 3D. I wonder if the ad will actually draw anybody to go see it. sounds like crowds were pretty sparse for some of you last night.

  21. Kurt Says:

anyone going to 3d in indy this weekend? got saturdays

  22. ohhphee Says:

I’m expecting a decent crowd in Chicago tonight. I’ll definitely report back tomorrow on the turnout here. Weekend is where it’s at, I’m thinking.

  23. congressman Says:

I’m going to see Phish in 3D tonight at the Roosevelt Showplace ICON in Chicago. ohhphee, let me know if you want to try and meet up before.

  24. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

wouldn’t you just love to know what was going through Trey’s head during the “speaking in tongues” section of this Bowie? I remember being completely overwhelmed by this Bowie that night. Robear can attest to its power as well. Nutty night in Kalamazoo

  25. ohhphee Says:

Are you planning to go to the movie bar before the show? My wife and I are sitting in the 21 and over reserved balcony section. I’m trying to determine how early we should show up. We’re taking the Red Line down there, and there’s not a whole lot in the immediate area, unless you know of someplace nearby.
