Ten Tunes For Friday

12.3.09 (W.Rogell)

Don’t look now, but it’s almost May! Summer tour sits but six weeks away. Until then, we’ll continue celebrating Fridays with Ten Tunes. This week’s playlist features diverse selections between ’93 and 2000. Enjoy the jams and the weekend!

Tweezer” 12.31.93 II

I hadn’t spun this “Tweezer” in a while – wow! A top-notch jam that opened the second set of New Year’s Eve features some straight up funk stylings fused with the balls-out energy and precision of ’93 – a devastating combination.

2001 > David Bowie” 10.27.95 II

This deep dive into darkness features a furious opening half with Trey speaking in tongues, before the band resets the jam halfway through.

7.31.09 (G.Lucas)

Split > Buffalo Bill > Makisupa > Rift” 10.29.94 I

This ending of the first set features some point-on improv and great transitions from the band in their last show before Halloween. (We’ll count this selection as two songs.)

Ghost” 11.11.98 II

While the “Halley’s” gets most of the attention from Van Andel ’98, this second-set closing “Ghost” is one of the best of the tour.

Stash” 8.28.93 I

This first-set version from Phish’s tour finale features some mind-bending, full-band interplay.

Bathtub Gin” 9.29.00 I

The impressive first-setter gets into some infectious grooving, offering, arguably, the best jam over the band’s last Vegas stand before hiatus.

Free” 11.9.98 I

This chunky first set version from UIC 98’s third night became an instant classic.

Reba” 12.7.95 II

A phenomenal version from one of the stronger shows of December ’95.

YEM” 6.9.00 E

On Japan 2000’s opening night, Phish dropped this swank, laid back encore in Tokyo.

Glad you had fun at PH 3D Lycan!

  2. ChefBradford Says:

Sound is unusually awful though. It could be our station’s transmitter, they have problems periodically.

  3. gus Says:

@lycan – i was also at phish3d tonight, and had kind of the opposite experience. the volume was fine, but the theatre wasn’t even half full, and the crowd wasn’t very interactive. everyone was sitting in different areas, which gave it kind of a weird vibe. but i enjoyed the movie nonetheless.

Hey Gus! How have you been?

You hitting any Phish shows this summer?

  5. ChefBradford Says:

BK, interesting recording. Keep it up, man!

  6. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

Thanks Chef! Glad you enjoyed it

  7. ChefBradford Says:

I love it when a random song your like pops up in your life.

“Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl”, Broken Social Scene

auto-played, next in line in iTunes after BK’s composition

  8. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

    Interesting, Chef.

    Haha

  9. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

Random song to come after that for sure

  10. ChefBradford Says:

my iTunes is set up alphabetically by artist

  11. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

Yeah I understand that, I just thought the song title was funny

Anyways, thanks for listening all, I appreciate it

    I’m going to bed

    Goodnight BB!

  12. Henry Says:

    @Chef

I love that Broken Social Scene song, has been stuck in my head now for about a week.

  13. ChefBradford Says:

Henry, it’s from the album “You Forgot It In People”, I think. Great album, if I recall, but unfortunately all I have left of it is that song.

  14. Mr. Completely Says:

‘truth’ or what is philosophically ‘right’ doesn’t seem too important for me as an academic. what can i get done, and how can i get it done.
    […]
of course, much political/philosophical thought goes into how i choose which struggles to join in…

well said, I feel like I understand where you’re coming from a lot better now just in general

  15. Mr. Completely Says:

didn’t know you had that CP goin on Brandon

  16. Henry Says:

I’ve always felt a bit weird loving the song so much, seeing as its title indicates that it is for 17 year old girls, but it is so catchy.

  17. ChefBradford Says:

I spent a very small portion of an evening listening to the song (and parts of the album) on headphones while coming down from an enhanced experience

  18. KWL Says:

word Mr C… glad I checked in before heading off for the night.

those 2 statements are sort of contradictory, but I have thought long and hard, in and out of academic settings, about what things in this life I am committed to.

Once committed to something, it becomes a question of strategy, tactics, tools… what can you do, how can you do it.

though of course, always remaining reflexive about your choices, constantly evaluating, am I on the right path, etc etc, is part of it too.

  19. gus Says:

Hey BK! i’ve been doing great, i have a 5 day break from school ahead of me, which i’m looking forward to.

i’m going to hartford 1 for sure, and i want to go to jones beach but don’t have tickets yet. i have stubhub bookmarked on my computer and am waiting for prices to go down, right now they’re just above face, so i think i’ll wait.

you’re going to MPP right? one night? both nights?

  20. Mr. Completely Says:

@kwl I don’t think those two things are contradictory at all, I thought those two statements illustrated the same dynamic (or dialectic I guess) I was talking about. The seeming tension is just resolved by time: first one, then the other.

you don’t want to act without thinking, but once you have thought things through and are acting from the heart, there’s no point in second guessing yourself constantly

(being open to evidence that contradicts your original premise is important thought)
