Ten Tunes For Friday

Asheville 6.9 (Lanser)

Friday has come back around, bringing ten more songs to kick off your weekend. This round, I featured musical couplets, delivering ten tracks in five selections. This week, I mixed a couple post-hiatus highlights into the mix,. Enjoy the pairings and have a great weekend!

Tweezer > Lifeboy” 6.23.94 II

This is the third consecutive version of “Lifeboy” that dripped out of “Tweezer” during June 1994. This “Tweezer” features prominent jamming on Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” (Excuse the nasty tape flip at the end of “Tweezer.”)

Timber Ho!, Jam > Taste” 11.30.96 II

A rare time when a guest enhanced a show, Peter Apfelbaum, on tenor sax, added a whole new element to this sequence, pushing the vibe in the direction of Phish fusion.

Suzy Greenberg > Theme” 12.28.03 II

Miami '03

On the first night of Miami ’03, this unlikely combo formed a significant chunk of set two. Diving far from the structure of “Suzy,” the band entered a menacing passage in which Trey offered a stunning guitar confessional.

Twist > Simple” 11.29.03 II

One of few highlights from ’03’s Turkey Run that stands the test of time.

Makisupa > David Bowie” 10.29.95 II

A devestating “Bowie” from the night before Halloween ’95, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Just got back from Phish 3D! Had a real good time! Nothing revelatory, as far as the movie goes, but it was impossible not to enjoy it!

Brought a non-Phisher with me, he really dug it, especially the Exile stuff, somewhat logically…

    Excited for another weekend!

Oh, and on the way back from the theater we drove past Camden St.! Why hello name of venue for upcoming first non-Phestival show!

Wow – the Pheonix Plaza Amphitheatre show on 6/23/94 in scenic Pontiac, MI! My second show finally makes an appearance on the blackboard. This was the one where I brought my mom – I was 16 at the time and I forced her to drive 13 hours with me from Montreal to stand in the rain on top of a multistorey parking garage (yes, that’s right – somehow I convinced her that it would be good driving practice for me). I suspect there aren’t many sources for this one, but certainly on the one I have, you can hear the rain coming down between songs. Check out the SOAM from the first set as well for some 94-style disjointedness. Happy Friday all.

@Matso, that’s awesome. Moms are awesome.

I’m taking my mom (and my dad, mother in law, wife’s nephew and friend who are all from Germany) to THEIR first PHiSH show at Finger Lakes this summer. The German commute is a good one, but my parents only have to drive 30 minutes…

  4. Willowed Says:

    Go Moms!!
Make it a great one friends.
    Hug a mom today.

  5. Gavinsdad Says:

Miner – thanks for throwing some 96 in the mix.

    mornin’ all

the light is shining a little brighter for me today but the storm still has yet to pass. hope you are all finding this day to be as good as you want it to be.

cactus is nice and up front in the mix for this tweezer. plus we get a little sip of that wonderful jedi speak. 94 phish was so tasty… great way to kick off the TTFF.

  7. SillyWilly Says:

    Good morning

That was a cool story, Matso.

Im going to listen to the 11-17-97 Reba today before my exam. Love the build up and then release of Reba.

not sure if this was mentioned yesterday (i’ve been off the board lately…super busy), but there is a seed on etree right now featuring one guy’s picks of his favorite sources for the entire Fall 1997 tour.

if you don’t want/need the whole huge torrent, you can check off only certain boxes (i think all bt clients let you do that?)

GarrettC – I have 10 days off of work starting June 25 (friday/camden show). If I leave work at 2pm I could be at the Camden Show at 9pm. I’d try and catch the 2nd set, but from there, looks like I’ll be on tour till Atlanta. So, if I make it, I can give you a ride.

  12. TheSloth Says:

This Tweezer->Lifeboy from Phoenix Plaza is wonderful. Actually, this show has a bunch of highlights. It has an amazing Mike led Bowie that is a must listen. The show was off the hook: The venue is on top of a parking garage; there was sideways rain and heavy wind for mist of the show; GA; a pit that soaked up every last drip; and the closest thing to a mosh I’ve been a part of at a Phish show (during Axilla).

    Thanks for the memories.

  13. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Taste with Peter Apfelbaum is just wonderful and so was Timber.

did anyone else have issues DLing the Tweezer and Suzy from the Ten Pack?

  14. Angryjoggerz Says:

“A rare time when a guest enhanced a show”

Is this the general consensus, because I used to love to catch the Giant Country Horns with the boys back in the day. I guess not everyone loved it, but I thought it was wicked.

  15. punkmug Says:

Finally made it to P3D last night. Loving Cup was worth the price of admission alone. Wow. Goose bumps and yeah I’ll admit it, even some small tears of joy. They must have wanted me to be happy.

  16. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

    Karl P enhances shows.

    Bruce doesn’t.

  17. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I think he means sit-ins as opposed to the horn section. like when another guitarist would hop on with them or something it kind of takes away from it. I think the “accepted” guests include stuff like Karl Perrazo, GCH (or any horn section with charted parts), Bob Gulotti, and that sort of thing.

  18. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

@ T3P0 – are we hitting any of the same shows this summer?

nTelos, Walnut Creek, Charlotte, Atlanta (x2), Deer Creek (x2)

  19. punkmug Says:

Those Gulotti 97 Texas shows are off the hook. Love that stuff.

  20. BTB Says:

Watching “Glastonbury 2009 Music Festival” the other day on Palladia…

Mostly pop music, but Neil Young closed out one of the nights. Got me thinking, the only PH sit-in I’d like to see this year would be Neil Young…one of Trey’s heroes.

Neil Young is getting old, but he still does it. I love that guy. Can’t even say I know his whole catelog of music, but still, he’s a legend.

  21. BTB Says:

Guitarpicker 420 – is this you, ha!!! Your Avatar-ian former self 🙂

  22. nonoyolker Says:

    Happy Friday all!

KP, props on your blog man. I went through the Ghetto Fab remasters and upgraded a lot of sad AUDs I had. You did a fantastic job on all the joints I grabbed. Nice work.

  23. Phamily Berzerker Says:

Amen on the tx 97 shows!

I hate 6 am confernece calls.

  24. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

not at this point, but if my world blows up I might just go on tour for a while. right now my definite shows are Hartford 1, Camden 1, and both Jones Beach.

I was watching that Glastonbury show recently too. Had never heard of the Ting Tings but something about the song they did on there grabbed me. totally poppy stuff but she had me in the palm of her hand.

  25. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @phamily b
see, if you had actually been extradited it would have been a late afternoon conference call. 8D
