Ten Tunes For Friday

Asheville 6.9 (Lanser)

Friday has come back around, bringing ten more songs to kick off your weekend. This round, I featured musical couplets, delivering ten tracks in five selections. This week, I mixed a couple post-hiatus highlights into the mix,. Enjoy the pairings and have a great weekend!

Tweezer > Lifeboy” 6.23.94 II

This is the third consecutive version of “Lifeboy” that dripped out of “Tweezer” during June 1994. This “Tweezer” features prominent jamming on Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” (Excuse the nasty tape flip at the end of “Tweezer.”)

Timber Ho!, Jam > Taste” 11.30.96 II

A rare time when a guest enhanced a show, Peter Apfelbaum, on tenor sax, added a whole new element to this sequence, pushing the vibe in the direction of Phish fusion.

Suzy Greenberg > Theme” 12.28.03 II

Miami '03

On the first night of Miami ’03, this unlikely combo formed a significant chunk of set two. Diving far from the structure of “Suzy,” the band entered a menacing passage in which Trey offered a stunning guitar confessional.

Twist > Simple” 11.29.03 II

One of few highlights from ’03’s Turkey Run that stands the test of time.

Makisupa > David Bowie” 10.29.95 II

A devestating “Bowie” from the night before Halloween ’95, in Louisville, Kentucky.

    Nice TIII
I knew you were doing the Camden and JB’s but I didn’t know you were sneaking in a Hartford!
I think a few of us are meeting up at my place before Hartford 1 (I think the big BBQ will be before Hartford 2 since a lot of people will just be gettign in the first night.
Come and join us! Everyone is invited obviously.

  2. willowed Says:

Now that I think about it. If you’re coming from MA. you will have to drive 25 minutes past the venue in order to get to my place. May not be worth it for you.
    Either way, all are invited.

Jerry Douglas and the McCoury Boys…

Best first set of Phish ever. Most enhanced by guests Phish set ever.

    Mark it 8 Dude!

  4. BTB Says:

TIII – yeah, I know what you mean

Hung out with a Berkley (Boston, MA) music student last night. Talked for 2 hours about music, the industry, recording etc. She just recorded an album at the ‘dropkick murphy’s’ studio in New Hampshire (something like that anyway).

I love shooting the shit with musicians

  5. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

there’s a section of the jam out of this Suzy that really feels like they are going to drop into Crimes of the Mind (right around 14 minutes and just before it gets ambient and sparse).

and for today’s example of complete idiots who know nothing about anything but somehow have a soapbox on which to stand:

I feel bad even linking it because it gives this ass clown hits (and I used to like this guy’s writing until I realized he is just a “flame” thrower and troll monger).

here’s the money quote in case you want to avoid even clicking that link (emphasis is mine):

    What It’s Famous For

Vermont: Maple syrup, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, and Phish. Also known as the Golden Triumvirate of Pussydom. My God, Phish is a terrible band. Basically, a collection of musicians less talented than the Dave Matthews Band got together and said, “Hey, there’s a whole subculture of unshowered nomadic potheads who just want to hear 20-minute songs. Let’s see if any of those Deadheads had children!” Guhhhh.

  6. SillyWilly Says:

Quotes like that prove that American education is largely a failure.

re. mega Fall 97 torrent. out of 11-13, 11-16, 11-21, 11-22, and 12-5 what do i need to grab. Right now i have my eye on set II 11-23. thoughts?

“a collection of musicians less talented than the Dave Matthews Band”

Hahah. I guess I just missed the DMB thing when I was living abroad, but why are they so often compared to Phish? Is it because so many young white people are into both (white people love phish!). Does DMB have a touring scene and all that? The only song I know of theirs is that space between song and it makes me want to punch special needs puppies.

  9. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

yeah, my only score in the lottery was 14th row center seats for Hartford 1. obviously not passing that up! not sure of plans yet. I will probably work a half day that day and then my buddy and I will be heading down. might not make it to your “40-o-que” but we will definitely need to meet up in the lots.

  10. BTB Says:

Vermonters think Vermont is it’s own country. Seriously, it’s the peoples republic of Vermont. They hail no allegiance to anything – got to love them for that…

Been there 5 times and hiked through the entire Green Mtn. range. Love it. Would move there if I could. Best friend lives there. Love Vermont.

    ^ yes it is.

Good mom story, I think we should all share a mom Phish story or two today or tomorrow if the desire strikes…puts things in perspective!

Saw PH3D myself. Good stuff. The little things. Page’s South Park likeness on his keyboard! Great.
The glowsticks and balloons brought me right to the grassy fields of Indio.

Someone had mentioned the moment where the camera looks over the ladies’ shoulders towards Trey during Suzy where he’s just eating it up? That was indeed an all-time Suzy!
The format was great, I was able to sit smack-dab in the middle of the theater all alone with the sound MAXED out. Can’t hear out of my left ear today, hope the two aren’t related, but they may be.
Oh well. The price of playing.

I loved the acoustic set in full color. Having not been at 8, it was really cool to see it brought to life.
The musical highlight for me was the Curtain(With).
    Absolutely brilliant.

    Enjoy the day.

  12. BTB Says:

TIII – that is green board material 😉

  13. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

of those, I’d definitely grab the Denver one and the two Hamptons. You should grab both Denvers if they are up there and don’t sleep on the Champaign show sandwiched between Denver and Hampton. That show was a serious throwdown. 2001>Wolfman’s>Makisupa>Taste is a second set most certainly worth writing home about.

  14. nonoyolker Says:

@ BTB – that is true about Vermont. A friend of a friend’s father ran for Govenor on the platform of secession. I think he came in third…

Their flag is uber lame: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SVR_flag.png

  15. kayatosh Says:

Thanks type III. I have 11-17 and 11-19 on CD already. love 11-19
w/ the torrent just looking to plug gaps. dling 11-22 d2 (Halley’s through Lope) and 11-23 d3 (Gin through bold as love). I also take a look at 11-16

  16. BTB Says:

    So Pal…

I got June 25-July 5th off, maybe we can form a succession from the Union over that time period, no? Blow up all those bridges heading in and out of Vermont, no?

Get this whole ‘Switzerland of North America’ thing up and running, no?

Make sure you’ve read the entire Vermont Manifesto before I trek it up to VT – I want this to go smoothly in case the Union militia tries to thwart our plans…

I’ll arrange the get-a-way carriage with Bernie Sanders, you grab Ben + Jerry and flank out New Hampshire, you now those Charlatans are going to be jealous.

  17. Kaveh Says:

Good morning everyone, and I hope that everyone is looking forward to it being Friday as much as I am.

  18. lastwaltzer Says:

@BTB – http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/the_new_secessionists_20100426/ great article about the secessionist movement in Vermont and Texas

    Neil Young and Phish

I also really enjoyed the flecktones sit in from europe

  19. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I shall do my best to be at willowed’s pre-show for Hartford 1 but I can’t promise anything right now. will depend on how quickly I can get on the road and keep my destiny unbound

  20. neemor Says:

    Morning again, all.

    Business this time.

We have been working on the series two phishthoughts.com tee shirts as many of you have been seeing and are getting close to the final stages.

In order to get these in our hands by tour time, the process will need to go quickly from here.

I’m wondering if those interested in supporting the site through a tee shirt purchase might send me an email with an idea how many shirts you might be interested in purchasing, sizes, etc. so we can get a rough idea…

I would like to have data compiled on a spreadsheet but don’t have the know-how to create that, so anyone who does and wants to make one it might be a big help!

So for now, just as an indicator to how many shirts we might be looking at:

Hey, Did you get my e-mail yesterday?

  22. halcyon Says:

Good Morning Everyone. May today’s day be brighter for those whose lights have been a little dim.

T III, Got the incredible, so far I am very impressed with the phone, still fat finger everytime I am sending a text, but their auto-correct feature does a pretty good job.

Happy mom’s day to BB moms!

  23. Leo Weaver Says:

Morning folks…just dropping by quickly before heading out for site visits and meetings. Y’all have a nice Friday!

@kaya…don’t sleep on the first set from 11.23.97, you’ll be missing some great stuff. And don’t try to actually do anything while spinning the Gin…you could hurt yourself.

  24. Leo Weaver Says:

Re: sit-ins…do yourselves a favor and check out 9.26.99 from NOLA. Hot hot hot sit-in with Michael Ray and Tim Green…CTB, Funky Bitch, Mozambique, and Cavern…smokin’

  25. Stupendous Says:
