Ten Tunes For Friday

Asheville 6.9 (Lanser)

Friday has come back around, bringing ten more songs to kick off your weekend. This round, I featured musical couplets, delivering ten tracks in five selections. This week, I mixed a couple post-hiatus highlights into the mix,. Enjoy the pairings and have a great weekend!

Tweezer > Lifeboy” 6.23.94 II

This is the third consecutive version of “Lifeboy” that dripped out of “Tweezer” during June 1994. This “Tweezer” features prominent jamming on Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” (Excuse the nasty tape flip at the end of “Tweezer.”)

Timber Ho!, Jam > Taste” 11.30.96 II

A rare time when a guest enhanced a show, Peter Apfelbaum, on tenor sax, added a whole new element to this sequence, pushing the vibe in the direction of Phish fusion.

Suzy Greenberg > Theme” 12.28.03 II

Miami '03

On the first night of Miami ’03, this unlikely combo formed a significant chunk of set two. Diving far from the structure of “Suzy,” the band entered a menacing passage in which Trey offered a stunning guitar confessional.

Twist > Simple” 11.29.03 II

One of few highlights from ’03’s Turkey Run that stands the test of time.

Makisupa > David Bowie” 10.29.95 II

A devestating “Bowie” from the night before Halloween ’95, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Phamily B- Mustache rides? At halftime? I’m in. Where the fuck is Mr. C.? He’s got something to say on the whole “mustache or dead cat on Bob’s face” debate.

  2. Luther Justice Says:

    Did someone say mustache rides?

  3. She Divides Says:

I’m out too. Have a great weekend everyone!

  4. flarrdogg Says:

Yes Luther- Free Ones. No need to buy the ticket to take that ride… all inclusive.

  5. flarrdogg Says:

LJ- You hitting DC>AV this summer? I’ve found that the spandex, one piece body suit is easy to spot form across a lawn/ pavilion. Should have no trouble running into each other.

  6. Luther Justice Says:

In this economy, it’s good to hear. That’s quite a good deal fo sho.

  7. Luther Justice Says:

I’m doing DC but might not be able to do AV. Still working it out.

I’ve got 3 body suits I’ll be rotating between shows. One’s legless for the hot days. All offer great support.

re: bob in the boston area. my girlfriend works for the school he did the benefit for and some of her kids got to perform with him. They had a really good time doing it, although they said he was “all business” rehearsing with them. It was big money affair for the school. It was probably a good thing the kids can’t see so they wouldn’t be afraid of Bob’s crazy facial hair.

saw the movie last night. still a decent sized crowd in the theater. nothing really new to add to the review other than it was really fun but it did seem like there were parts where Trey appeared a little rusty (maze). 3d closeups of Page were a little scary at times too.

  9. Luther Justice Says:

I saw the 3D last night and really enjoyed it. One thing I noticed is how much fun they seem to be having. Smiles all around. That was worth the price of admission.

  10. Luther Justice Says:

There was so much detail you could actually see the speaker cones moving in Mike’s bass amp during the acoustic set.

Loved seeing Phish in a new medium.

  11. joe Says:

the rehearsal stuff was really cool too. The taller woman (forget her name) really had the groove going. Looked like she was even locked in on Trey’s solos while dancing. Just cool to see the smiles close up all around like Luther said from not only phish but the backup players too. Also, Kudos to the person who turned up the volume midway through the first number. Nice to feel the bass in the theater.

  12. Icculus420 Says:

oh my god. i was downloading a phish show from megaupload and right next to the download link, there was a banner for HOOD milk!!!

  13. Luther Justice Says:

You can feel good about Hood!

So for all of those following along at home, I have decided that I really want the solo acoustic intro to be for Antelope. It should be different enough from antelope that everyone thinks ‘WTF is this song?’ then trey will put down the acoustic and pick up the electric and bust out the familiar opening notes

For those who haven’t… I have decided unilaterally that Phish needs to add add a dramatic acoustic intro to at least on song. My preference would be that they add a new one every couple shows. Heart’s ‘Crazy on You’ was the inspiration for this but Led Zepplin has a few songs like that too.

And why do I want this? Cause I think it would be fun and add some spice… got to have some new tricks for ’10.

    afternoon everyone…

Beer recommendation: New Belgium Ranger IPA. So tasty. I am not normally a New Belgium fan, but this beer is the goods.

About to spin a 97 compilation. Not the Phish Destroys America one, but another that is equally as funky!
