Ten Tunes For Friday

Asheville 6.9 (Lanser)

Friday has come back around, bringing ten more songs to kick off your weekend. This round, I featured musical couplets, delivering ten tracks in five selections. This week, I mixed a couple post-hiatus highlights into the mix,. Enjoy the pairings and have a great weekend!

Tweezer > Lifeboy” 6.23.94 II

This is the third consecutive version of “Lifeboy” that dripped out of “Tweezer” during June 1994. This “Tweezer” features prominent jamming on Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” (Excuse the nasty tape flip at the end of “Tweezer.”)

Timber Ho!, Jam > Taste” 11.30.96 II

A rare time when a guest enhanced a show, Peter Apfelbaum, on tenor sax, added a whole new element to this sequence, pushing the vibe in the direction of Phish fusion.

Suzy Greenberg > Theme” 12.28.03 II

Miami '03

On the first night of Miami ’03, this unlikely combo formed a significant chunk of set two. Diving far from the structure of “Suzy,” the band entered a menacing passage in which Trey offered a stunning guitar confessional.

Twist > Simple” 11.29.03 II

One of few highlights from ’03’s Turkey Run that stands the test of time.

Makisupa > David Bowie” 10.29.95 II

A devestating “Bowie” from the night before Halloween ’95, in Louisville, Kentucky.

I’m happy for all of you. My parents were both musicians, mom was a music major at Temple and taught piano lessons on the side when I was growing up; dad was in a jazz trio and played piano/organ around Philly in the late 50’s.

Don’t know exactly why they left the East Coast, but it was probably under shady circumstances (mom said that he met dad while they were teaching music together in Philly, but from what I gather there was some kind of FBI-related drug sting that got them together)..at any rate, I started mom’s piano lessons when I was 3, but I was never able to commit.

Took band in school, played clarinet, but drifted away from it in High School, until one day during my sophomore year the band teacher gave me a ride home and convinced me to get back into music…played clarinet and sax and did choir and basically reset my path, so much so that I went to college as a Music major.

Went to Pacific in Stockton CA (started as a clarinet major but switched to piano after 1 year), but was less than inspired and fucked around most of the time…once I got familiar with Zappa’s music I wanted to be in his band, but never really considered it a possibility, mainly because I was to lazy to commit….

Took composition my Junior year…wrote a percussion ensemble piece called MPOA (Manic Percussionists on Acid – complete with quotes from All Blues and I Shot the Sheriff), and it was good enough to get me a B for the course…arranged a couple things for the pep band after that, but could never get really into it.

Now I haven’t really played since 1998, despite the fact that I have my dad’s Hammond BV (very similar to the B3) and Leslie cabinet, but they’re in disrepair, and I have had too many other financial obligations to deal with it…but one day, I will be back, and I will form the best bad Nirvana Cover Band ever!

I played clarinet for seven years, baritone for three or four, and piano for a month

I’ve said it many a time, and I’ll say it again:

    Arabia is the shit.

That is all. (As far as that goes…)

In other news, very exciting day today, I wrote my first song on the guitar! I’m now 4 months in to learning that instrument and I’m having the time of my life!

    Music!

Figured it tied in with tonight’s convo…

“Voopa its never late to get back in it!”

I know, but I’ve seen what it does to people…Jerry, Janis, Jimi….of course, I’ve seen the redemption side too…Trey, Clapton, etc…plus my wife (who’s a High School Band Director) did some gigging for a while and it tore her to shreds, so I’m kind of reluctant to go there, but I’ve learned a lot too, so we’ll see….

  15. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:
