Fall Forecast: Vegas Baby?

Las Vegas 2010?

While Phish has yet to play a single note of summer tour, rumors are already circulating about what they may do come fall. And right now, the whispers are all talking about a three-night return to Las Vegas during the second week of October. If this happens, Phish would return to face the city that has come to symbolize the beginning of their demise in 2004. But at the same time end, Phish in Vegas is a tradition like none other. There’s nothing quite like spilling out of Thomas and Mack, wide-eyed onto the strip, as the night has just begun. An annual rite from ’96 moving forward, Sin City hosted many memorable Phish shows, and if the whispers are correct, three more are coming down the road.

Vegas 2000 Poster

While a stop in Vegas may seem surprising given the sober, family-oriented vibe of the band these days, returning to Vegas may be a way for Phish to right the wrongs of ’04, and they know there is no better locale for their fans. Regardless of reasoning, it seems that Phish may once again visit the neon desert oasis before too long. Apparently, these dates would be in conjunction with an appearance at Austin City Limits Festival, this year taking place between October 8-10. So if one were to hazard a guess, Phish would hit Vegas the following weekend of October between the 14th and 17th. Going purely on speculation here, perhaps the band would then head west for a run up the coast after these rumored dates in the desert. One can only hope.

And in other overheard mumblings…It sounds like the Holiday Run will shift back up north to Madison Square Garden this year, after two consecutive appearances in Miami. And maybe – just maybe – Indio may present itself as an option for Halloween again, after the original dates conflicted with Austin’s festival. Obviously we are be getting way ahead of ourselves here, but sometimes, as Phish fans, that’s what we do. And with less than a month left before Chicago’s summer kick off, what better way to kill some time.

What do you think?

    Vegas… That’d be cool.

Also, here’s a video of Ben Folds covering Elliot Smith’s “Say Yes,” and it’s very cool. I’ve never actually listened to Elliot Smith (shame on me, I know), and I’m sure of probably heard Ben Folds, but I’ve never enjoyed it enough to have it leave an impression, so I don’t know what attributes contribute what percent of the coolness factor, but regardless, pretty cool.

If you like you can replace any of the multitude of “cool”s in the above post with any of the following terms:
If you’re looking for a little variety in your posts, something I am apparently not capable of achieving at the moment!

  3. brainstar Says:

I was really really hoping for a return to Limestone, but it would probably be too cold after the jones beach dates. Either way, MSG NYE would be absolutely ideal for me and has me so stoked!!!!!!!!

  4. Willowed Says:

My west coast runs are behind me. At my old age and with family etc… west coast trips are not in the cards anymore for this guy. That’s OK though.
I just hope you westies get a nice smattering of shows in the Fall.

    You deserve it.

Make it a great one friends!

  5. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Great thing about shows from 1994 is that many of them were played in places that Phish simply won’t return to, ever. True Phishtory.

  6. Willowed Says:

You know what I just found out. The Unite States second World Cup game is the day of Hartford 2. 10:00 a.m. I foresee a Willowed’s Ghetto Fabulous World Cup BBQ Party in the works.
I know it will be the day after Hartford 1 so some of you locals may have t sleep off your grogginess from the night before. But for you early risers I see a World Cup game at my place at 10:00 full of bacon eggs and beers.
I think I will be moving the start time of the CT. BB meet up to 9:30 a.m.
    Can you boys handle that?
US Wolrd Cup National Team Jersey’s welcome. I have my #10 Donovan jersey ready to go.

  7. Willowed Says:

    6/18 USA vs. Slovania 10:00 a.m.
If they lose to Englad (which they wont) this will be the most important match of the tournament.

  8. lastwaltzer Says:

“they know there is no better locale for their fans”

eh, not so much. Obviously thats completely subjective, but Vegas has to be at the bottom of places I’d like to visit even if Phish was involved.

Personally I think many of you are already going to go to the most ideal locale, Telluride.

  9. ma Says:

    thanks miner and gavinsdad,

DOTD was a hometown show…haven’t heard it since.

^no better locale for the FANS, not for them…true!

  10. KWL Says:

i vowed a couple years ago to never again return to vegas… with the caveat that one thing and one thing ONLY could get me back in that city…

you guessed it, a phish show

  11. ma Says:

have you never been to vegas?

like mr. miner likes to say, ” it goes together like peanut butter and jelly”
add vegas into the mix, and now you got “pb & j with some serious marshmellow fluff “…quite tasty!!

  12. lastwaltzer Says:

@kwl, thanks for sharing your blog, ive been enjoying reading it.

  13. ma Says:

  14. lastwaltzer Says:

@ma, I think you were referring to me. No I’ve never been and don’t plan on getting there. If I want bright lights I’ll go to New York. I see no reason to go to Vegas, in a way it represents everything thats wrong with our materialistic culture.

  15. SillyWilly Says:

really wish i could make the Willowed’s Ghetto Fabulous World Cup BBQ.

i never sleep well after a show. i have dreams of the show all night.

    I’d be there for sure.

I’d love to go see Phish in Vegas. gotta save up that loan money…

  16. BTB Says:

Don’t think I’ll be doing vegas, but but but…they gots cheap flights, cheap hotels and cheap steaks

Lastwalter – PH playing on the side of a mountain = glory, glory hallelujah!

  17. nonoyolker Says:

Love the rumor mill!! Miner is batting 1.000 on predictions dating back to the return, so pack your bags.

Never caught phish in Vegas. I’m not as spry as I once was, not sure how well the old bod would fare in sin city.

Nice use of “smattering” willowed! Hope the westies get their fair share as well

Frankie plugged this yesterday with a link, but scoop the new Marco Benevento – Between the Needles and Nightfall. I grabbed that last night and it sounds right and tight on first spin. Nice music to cleanse the pallate before summer tour!

  18. ma Says:

    @ lw,

i couldn’t agree wit you more.. my step grandfather used to live there, so it was always special getting to spend time with him….other than that, i don’t gamble…it’s just quite the treat like miner mentions rolling out of the thomas and mack or the sam boyd for that matter and feeling like you’re on another planet.

  19. BTB Says:

KWL – i will definitely check that blog. Looks good.

As I told you, I took 2 semesters of Geology at Ohio State, “Rocks for Jocks”, I’m kind of an expert. Also, 2nd largest geological library in the western hemisphere I believe “Orton Hall”.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m examining rock synclines and calculating the speed of the flow of water through permeable silt 😉

  20. ma Says:

    MSG new years, ugh!!

look at that palm tree photo…where would you rather be before and after the show? how about diggin your toes in the sand and splashin in the waves.

  21. SillyWilly Says:

you might not believe me about this, and feel free to be skeptical:

I grew up in Salt Lake City.

and spent 6 months in Cedar City, UT about 80 miles from Vegas…

Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities in America, and there really is a great family/non-gambling/non-club scene growing in and around the strip and off the strip.

Put it this way, I went to a public high school in SLC (public high school’s in Utah are more or less Mormon high schools) and every year we played a couple baseball tournaments down there. We stayed on the strip.

Our coaches were all Mormon and most of my teammates were Mormon. They wouldn’t have let us stay on the strip if they were scared we’d do something crazy, or something weird would happen.

Im just saying this so you don’t miss out on anything. If Phish did play Vegas, you could easily avoid the on-the-strip scene.

Also, there’s some great state/national parks around Vegas and just across the border in Southern Utah.

  22. Chalkdustin Says:

    Rumors make me giddy.

Morning everyone. Long time no post.

  23. ma Says:

confirmed shows with tickets in hand make me giddy…morning!

  24. jdub Says:

Phish in Vegas, not in the cards for me but it is akin to an adult disney land with the neon, crazy people all around, and an anything goes attitude. Like KWL, I concluded there is really no reason to go back, other than perhaps a phishy weekend….

I just got word that Ted Nugent is playing at my local club (Toad’s Place) on 6/20. I may have to skip out on SPAC that weekend to check out the biggest ego in rock and roll.

  25. KWL Says:

    thanks lw!
