    @shafty

it just seems like they went to such great efforts to state that they COULDN’T kill each other.

I think that yes we can say that Jacob destroyed the MiB’s body, but his essence (or at least the evil part of it) lived on in the embodiment of the Smoke Monster

  2. Mr.Palmer Says:

I do have some lingering questions though:
-How did the stepmom destroy that whole village?

I think the stepmom was the original smoke monster, and therefore able to wipe out the entire village. She also said that going into the light was “worse than death”. She’s been there.

    Just a few thoughts…..

  3. Lycanthropist Says:

what makes MiB different from Christian Locke and Yemi is that he retains his own consciousness…

he is just using the images of the deceased…
but his being and his consciousness is ever present UNLIKE Christian, Locke, et al

  4. Lycanthropist Says:

yeh i thought about that to Mr. P

but i don’t know… it seemed like the smoke monster was created by the light source..

i feel like if stepmom was smokey they would have given a bit more indication

  5. shaftytim Says:

jacob and mib’s mom said specificially “you can never hurt each other” and that, among so many other things she said, was proven false on two occasions when jacob started beating the crap out of mib.

    she has no credibility.

i don’t think, based on what we saw in this episode, that mib was evil, any moreso than jacob, and the evil that was released in the form of black smoke was what was down in the ground.

btw- i was left with a nagging feeling this whole episode of “who is that lady?” – the fake mom. have we seen her before, or is she in a movie or something?

  6. bright light Says:

at first i thought it was the same woman who plays helen. at least to me she looked quite similar.

  7. Lycanthropist Says:

she was in the west wing and several movies

  8. Tsac77 Says:

I liked the episode. My only real issue with it was that there was no explanation about why the wheel worked or what it actually did. It was just “Look, I put a homemade wheel near that hole in the wall where light comes from, and now when I turn it I can finally get off the island!” What?!

  9. Tsac77 Says:

Oh, and here’s a pretty good theory I saw on another blog:

My take was that the light, or the source of the light, is necessary for (or the source of) all life on the planet. When Jacob sent his brother into the cave, his spirit became the black smoke, and in the process absorbed or took on the light (or its source.) This rendered the original body useless, and that’s what’s in the cave. Jacob’s brother lived on in the form of the black smoke, which possessed the ability to take on human form, including that of his former body.

The MIB just wants to leave the island, but that’s impossible now that he’s absorbed (or is a part of) the light – because if he leaves the island, so does the light, and, as Widmore said, everyone will cease to exist.

Jacob must protect the light, which, thanks to his own actions, means protecting his brother, and keeping him from leaving the island.

This continues with Lost’s idea that no one is purely good or bad. Jacob is good because he’s protecting the island for the good of the world, but this goodness is marred because it was his actions that condemned his brother to an eternity on the island. The MIB is bad because he will do anything to leave the island, but these actions are necessary because of what Jacob did to him. All the MIB wants to do is go home, and there’s nothing evil in that desire. He may not even know that his leaving would doom everyone on Earth.

  10. Snigglebeach Says:

I also suspected the Step-mom may have really been a smoke monster too.

Forget killing off the whole village, she filled in an entire well??

Later when MIB kills her he does not hesitate in killing her before whe says a word…

How can people be bashing the writers?? No matter what happens from here on out, they entertained me for 6 years+.

Even after seeing the rocks repeatedly, it never crossed my mind until the very last second, that we were seeing the events leading up to the Adam and Eve reveal. I read a ton of theories, and no one even came close to calling this one. True we did not have the relevant info, but never did we even consider they might no be lovers. never mind that one killed the other.

To me this episode proved that the writers know exactly what they are doing. Which makes me wonder how mind-boggling the Alt timeline relevance is going to be.

The line I pointed out to me friends that seemed esp. important was when the kids were playing that game (anyone know what it was??) Jacob says ” You made up the rules”, and MIB says, someday you can create your own game and you can make all the rules” (or something close to that, have to re-watch) That line may be the catalyst for everything we have ever seen….

  11. shaftytim Says:

i was kind of pissed that they didn’t give us the real name for the MIB.

it was almost comical that the real mother said “i only thought of one name”.

i think we should go back to calling him esau, especially since they were twins

  12. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

the game is called Senet which some people say is the oldest “board game” in human history. huge significance in egyptian afterlife/mythology.

  13. Wilson8or Says:

TSac: Wonderful theory! It makes the episode worth rewatching given that perspective!

  14. Looking For Owls? Says:

@bright light, the step mom was Juno’s mom (maybe step mom, go figure)

  15. NorCal waiting on FALL! Says:

    just wanted to add:

    to sniggle:

you said “Later when MIB kills her he does not hesitate in killing her before whe says a word…”

    Not true.

    She said thank you.

  16. Mr. Completely Says:

if she was the smoke monster she would not have died when stabbed.

there were aspects of the ep I liked but overall I think it had nonsensical and contradictory implications and may end up being a catastrophe for the show.

I need to watch it again and think about it more. I kind of feel like it was a disaster.

  17. Mr. Completely Says:

(but I can’t say exactly why yet except for some specific issues like the “how did she destroy the village if she’s not smokey but if she is then how did she die?” thing)

  18. Mr. Completely Says:

also, if I’m understanding the books right, isn’t the light just the dark tower, basically?

    if so: weak

  19. Mr. Completely Says:

I did really like the Adam and Eve reveal in and of itself

  20. Mr. Completely Says:

it was almost comical that the real mother said “i only thought of one name”.

We actually did LOL at that. Definitely weak. The no name thing has become quite ludicrous at this point.

  21. Mr. Completely Says:

I don’t think the black smoke is different from MiB. It is the form he was transformed into.

I don’t mind unresolved questions and a PARTIALLY open ending as long as some big character things are resolved.

It just feels to me like there are things from this ep which actually don’t work.

But it’s complex enough that I need to ponder it more.

  22. Mr.Miner Says:

havent read through these comments yet, but last night was bomb…i think that their “mother” was island guardian and a smoke monster at the same time…(How the hell did she tuin and burn the people’s camps and ruin the wells? b/c he’s a smoke monster too).

MiB is clearly the chosen one, and Jacob is clearly not pure “good” which is what i’ve thought for a long time. it was Jacob’s anger and bitterness that created smokey…

The mother respected MiB’s free will to “leave” but forced Jacob to stay.

It looks like Jacob was the bitch here, forced into a life he didnt want, and so he, in bitterness, kept damning souls to come to the island to prove to his brother that people were “good”. Hence, he went out and touched all the losties and essentially fucked them over.

There is no good and bad it seems, and if anything, the island seems to be controlled by evil…

  23. Mr.Miner Says:

if she was the smoke monster she would not have died when stabbed.

^ she never spoke before MiB stabbed her (a la Dogen’s instructions)

  24. Mr.Miner Says:

How can people be bashing the writers?? No matter what happens from here on out, they entertained me for 6 years+

^ agreed. and i also think last night was awesome, setting up the rest of the series.

MiBkis right, people are such bitches 😉

  25. Mr.Miner Says:

    TSac. good theory
