Phish on Jimmy Fallon Tonight

Phishbill -Halloween '09

Phish will make their their first late-night television appearance since June 21, 2004 tonight, as part of Jimmy Fallon’s Tribute to Exile on Main Street Week. Fallon, who once starred with the band in a memorable SNL skit, is commemorating the current re-issue of the The Stones double-album on May 18, hosting different artists each night this week to cover a selection the iconic record. On Monday, Green Day played “Rip This Joint,” and on the same night, Fallon invited out special guest Taj Majal to join his house band, The Roots, in a sublime and soulful  cover of “Shine a Light.” On Tuesday, Keith Urban covered “Tumbling Dice” with Stones’ keyboardist Chuck Leavell and last night, Sheryl Crow joined The Roots to cover “All Down the Line.” It shouldn’t come as a big surprise what song Phish will play, but we’ll let the events unfold.

Culminating the week tonight on Friday night, Fallon will air the premiere of “Stones In Exile,” a new documentary about the album’s recording sessions in the south of France amidst legendary drug use and debauchery. Having fled England to avoid paying income tax, the band drove to the French Riviera, setting up shop in Villa Nellcote, Keith Richards’ mansion by the sea. Despite the legendary decadence, the resulting work  has been exalted as a trendsetting record of the gritty, drugged-out scene that blossomed in the Seventies. Exile came first, spawning a generation of bad-boy imitators, but no one did it quite like the Stones. The documentary will air in full on Friday night.

6.21.94 - Ed Sullivan Theatre

The last time Phish played on late-night TV came on Letterman in June ’04 between SPAC and Deer Creek. Following their Beatles-esque midday performance atop the marquee of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre, Phish played “Scents and Subtle Sounds” off the newly-released Undermind. But the story of the gorgeous summer day was the mini-set Phish dropped in midtown Manhattan. After several run-thoroughs of “Scents and Subtle Sounds,” Phish gave the few thousand fans who gathered on the city block something to remember. There’s nothing quite like raging “Tweezer” amidst skyscrapers in The Big Apple. Click here to read more about this epic afternoon.

  1. myers Says:

hope more air time than the song. skit or interview would be great

  2. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:

Man no matter what I dont get to be first post…

Miner thats good news about the JK show…
I had heard the Roots were the house band and I just never knew he was into
good music like that… Nice to see someone promoting what he loves
as opposed to what he has to promote… what channel is this on?
    nbc?

  3. garretc Says:

You scared me Miner, for a second I thought this was a post-show review and I’d missed it!

Alright, I’ll get to reading it now…

  4. garretc Says:

Hmm, it was nice to punk Green Day show up for “Rip This Joint”! Haven’t listened to ’em much since all the American Idiot singles on the radio burned me out…

Perhaps revisit worthy! (By which I mean the early stuff)

I know a lot of you may disagree with that statement, but so be it!

  5. Corey Says:

While listening to Reba, from a fondly remembered experience at Lemonwheel, I thought of Gamehenge in Canandaigua.

Thank you Mr. Miner. That is all…

  6. Corey Says:

Oh, and PHiSH livin’ in the tube tonight. But you already knew that…

  7. Exree Hipp Says:

    Can’t wait!

Had no idea I liked Keith Urban, either, but listening to his performance of Tumblin’ Dice I would pay to see him and that band cover Exile in full, too. They had the vibe just right for that track.

  8. jdub Says:

Will Sharon and the Dap Kings sit in with them tonight? It would be a nice touch.

  9. Angryjoggerz Says:

My daughter just waved hello to me for the first time today and I think my heart is going to explode with love!

  10. gavinsdad Says:

@jdub: Sharon Jones/Dap-Kings are on tour…they’re in the ATL tonite. If they need horn backfill one of the Roots boys can handle it for sure.

Along with the new “Exile” docu, you guys should check out Robert Greenfield’s “Exile on Main St”….which is a book about the same sessions and period in exile in the chateau in France. I’d give the book a 6…which is not a stellar review…but it’s a quick read that’ll round out your understanding of the album. Greenfield also wrote the extra juicy and depressing “Dark Star”…which was an oral history of JG.

  11. gavinsdad Says:

sorry to do it AJ but…

“fathers, be good to your daughters”

i know that’s the velveeta but i have a daughter too (sagesdad) and i understand where you’re coming from. she’s got me in her palm.

  12. bhizzle Says:

@Aj….it’s just the beginning…my daughter is 3.5 yrs and I couldn’t tell you how many times my heart has exploded. It doesn’t get any better!

@gdad…don’t be sorry about that lyric…that song draws a tear to my eye everytime I hear it. That and that Melon tune Change…I don’t know why…

End of the sappy stuff ! Where’s that JotD!?!?!?!

  13. Wilson8or Says:

“It shouldn’t come as a surprise as to what song Phish will play..”

14 minute Torn and Frayed! Not so much? Damn. Loving Cup will be just fine, I’m sure!

  14. BTB Says:

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are on a promote of their own album right now – probably unlikely they sit it, but that would be cool.

    Canandaigua Gamehenge, now you’re talking!

  15. bhizzle Says:

just popped in LP vol. 1, 12.14.95…lets see how she’ll treat me…

  16. kenny powers Says:

    bhizzle

be careful w/ that Halley’s -> NICU…don’t operate heavy machinery, etc.

  17. Mr. Palmer Says:

Morning folks! What time is this clown Fallon on?

  18. El Duderino Says:

    Phish will play Loving Cup

    Mark it 8 Dude

  19. El Duderino Says:

    12:30am East Coast I believe

  20. Phamily Berzerker Says:

If you have not heard the DOTD, do yourself a favor and give it a spin around the block.

It is early our here anyhow too early to be in the office at least, though here I am.

What’s the line on tonight Loving Cup v. Torn and Frayed?

Seriously, grab the DOTD, support Señor Miner, thank Phish.

    On with your days…

  21. Mr. Palmer Says:

LC is pretty much confirmed i believe. No suprise there. DVR will be set.

  22. nonoyolker Says:

Tonight should be a cool spectacle. Little doubt what they’ll play, but hopefully they rage it with horns again, as it is intended to be played.

Watched the Taj + Roots ‘Shine a Light’. Was cool to watch, musically not outstanding, but seeing Taj and the roots together is def worth it. Taj put out some really great material in his time (as did the roots…).

Going to need start fasting on phish before the tour. I like to deprive myself a bit before heading out on the road. Should help that i’m in LA all next week for work – all dre and madlib beats while i’m rolling in my rental Seabring, Boiiiii!

  23. gratefulcub Says:

Cheers to daughters and treating them well AJ and GDad. All mine can do is smile and make incoherent noises. Her only use for her hands at this point is to see if she can fit both in her mouth at the same time (close, but not quite). But that alone is heartmelting.

Good morning, it’s hi ho hi ho today.

  24. nonoyolker Says:

Oh, fuck fasting for another day. I’m with you BHIZZLE, haven’t heard that Broome County 2nd set in a while. Shit rages. Curtain in 3..2..1..

LC is a lock. Would love to see another Torn, but its highly unlikely

  25. Guyute711 Says:

Keith Urban did a great job. I have been waiting for Green day to go away for years now. Still waiting….
