Phish on Jimmy Fallon Tonight

Phishbill -Halloween '09

Phish will make their their first late-night television appearance since June 21, 2004 tonight, as part of Jimmy Fallon’s Tribute to Exile on Main Street Week. Fallon, who once starred with the band in a memorable SNL skit, is commemorating the current re-issue of the The Stones double-album on May 18, hosting different artists each night this week to cover a selection the iconic record. On Monday, Green Day played “Rip This Joint,” and on the same night, Fallon invited out special guest Taj Majal to join his house band, The Roots, in a sublime and soulful¬† cover of “Shine a Light.” On Tuesday, Keith Urban covered “Tumbling Dice” with Stones’ keyboardist Chuck Leavell and last night, Sheryl Crow joined The Roots to cover “All Down the Line.” It shouldn’t come as a big surprise what song Phish will play, but we’ll let the events unfold.

Culminating the week tonight on Friday night, Fallon will air the premiere of “Stones In Exile,” a new documentary about the album’s recording sessions in the south of France amidst legendary drug use and debauchery. Having fled England to avoid paying income tax, the band drove to the French Riviera, setting up shop in Villa Nellcote, Keith Richards’ mansion by the sea. Despite the legendary decadence, the resulting work¬† has been exalted as a trendsetting record of the gritty, drugged-out scene that blossomed in the Seventies. Exile came first, spawning a generation of bad-boy imitators, but no one did it quite like the Stones. The documentary will air in full on Friday night.

6.21.94 - Ed Sullivan Theatre

The last time Phish played on late-night TV came on Letterman in June ’04 between SPAC and Deer Creek. Following their Beatles-esque midday performance atop the marquee of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre, Phish played “Scents and Subtle Sounds” off the newly-released Undermind. But the story of the gorgeous summer day was the mini-set Phish dropped in midtown Manhattan. After several run-thoroughs of “Scents and Subtle Sounds,” Phish gave the few thousand fans who gathered on the city block something to remember. There’s nothing quite like raging “Tweezer” amidst skyscrapers in The Big Apple. Click here to read more about this epic afternoon.

Speaking of high school reunions; just chatted with a friend (acquaintance, really) of mine with whom I graduated. He completed some therapy and is now free of, I think, thyroid cancer

  2. ChefBradford Says:

anybody here read Neal Stephenson? “Cryptonomicon”, “Zodiac”, etc? Those are the only two books of his I’ve read so far, but I’ve read them both a number of times. For some reason, a scene from the “Cryptonomicon” moves me, deeply, each time I read it: pages 858-859 in the paperback edition from maybe 2000

I haven’t been able to get anyone I know (and I know depressingly few readers) to check him out. I don’t know about his other books, but those two are fascinating. “Zodiac” is terrifying and enlightening, and “Crypto…” is just plain fun and rambling

who’s still up. Looks like I might catch Fallon in real time, tape-delayed of course.

  4. butter Says:

  5. ChefBradford Says:

I’m lurking, saving Fallon for tomorrow

  6. BTB Says:

    BTB = AWAKE

Keith Richards is actually going to be on the set tonight

  7. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

So, it’s tape-delayed squared on the left coast?

  8. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Is Jacob Dylan actually Benjamin Button? He seems to be aging backwards.

  9. HarryHood Says:

Man, Jakob Dylan sounds more and more like his pops the older he gets. Another ten years and you won’t be able to understand him at all

    @Chef
I haven’t read it yet, but I have a Neal Stephenson book sitting in my room back home… My dad’s a big fan though (got the book from him). I think he read “Quicksilver”, or something? That might be one of his books?

Anybody else listen to Wolf Parade? They’re one of the bands that I’ll be reconnecting with now that I’ve started my pre-tour weaning off of Phish…

  11. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Sounds like a homer crowd in the audience based on the roar at the announcement of PHISH.

  12. butter Says:

its just on at 12:30 or whatever here too, which occurs 3 hours later

  13. ChefBradford Says:

garret, I think Quicksilver is the first in a trilogy by NS, and some characters in Crypto are descended from some characters in Quick. I’ve been curious about that trilogy for a long time, haven’t yet made the plunge. I highly recommend Zodiac and Crypto

  14. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

this is already a good show

  15. HarryHood Says:

That might be the funniest opening segment I’ve seen from Fallon

  16. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I almost quoted him but don’t want to spoil it for our westie black boarders.

  17. garretc Says:

    Yeah gentlemen, no spoilers please!

  18. HarryHood Says:

Did he just say that? Phish is on the show because of Bud Light Golden Wheat? That’s just awsome. llfa

  19. HarryHood Says:

This is gonna be a good show. And I’m not a really big Fallon fan.

  20. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

There’s a huge sit-in with the Roots tonight. Huge! Not sayin’ who it is, but’s its a biggie.

  21. SillyWilly Says:

Im half expecting Jimmy Fallon to interview Miner….

  22. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I bet Miner is in the audience. He was probably on screen a minute ago.

  23. HarryHood Says:

    Is Miner there?

  24. SillyWilly Says:

    posterkid is there.

  25. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:
