Phish on Jimmy Fallon Tonight

Phishbill -Halloween '09

Phish will make their their first late-night television appearance since June 21, 2004 tonight, as part of Jimmy Fallon’s Tribute to Exile on Main Street Week. Fallon, who once starred with the band in a memorable SNL skit, is commemorating the current re-issue of the The Stones double-album on May 18, hosting different artists each night this week to cover a selection the iconic record. On Monday, Green Day played “Rip This Joint,” and on the same night, Fallon invited out special guest Taj Majal to join his house band, The Roots, in a sublime and soulful  cover of “Shine a Light.” On Tuesday, Keith Urban covered “Tumbling Dice” with Stones’ keyboardist Chuck Leavell and last night, Sheryl Crow joined The Roots to cover “All Down the Line.” It shouldn’t come as a big surprise what song Phish will play, but we’ll let the events unfold.

Culminating the week tonight on Friday night, Fallon will air the premiere of “Stones In Exile,” a new documentary about the album’s recording sessions in the south of France amidst legendary drug use and debauchery. Having fled England to avoid paying income tax, the band drove to the French Riviera, setting up shop in Villa Nellcote, Keith Richards’ mansion by the sea. Despite the legendary decadence, the resulting work  has been exalted as a trendsetting record of the gritty, drugged-out scene that blossomed in the Seventies. Exile came first, spawning a generation of bad-boy imitators, but no one did it quite like the Stones. The documentary will air in full on Friday night.

6.21.94 - Ed Sullivan Theatre

The last time Phish played on late-night TV came on Letterman in June ’04 between SPAC and Deer Creek. Following their Beatles-esque midday performance atop the marquee of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre, Phish played “Scents and Subtle Sounds” off the newly-released Undermind. But the story of the gorgeous summer day was the mini-set Phish dropped in midtown Manhattan. After several run-thoroughs of “Scents and Subtle Sounds,” Phish gave the few thousand fans who gathered on the city block something to remember. There’s nothing quite like raging “Tweezer” amidst skyscrapers in The Big Apple. Click here to read more about this epic afternoon.

  2. yanzlow Says:

Conan > Fallon (that’s a ‘greater than’ not a segue). They haven’t invented a word to describe how bad fallon is, but i’m watching for the phish references. sigh.

  3. ChefBradford Says:

My ex-GF-possibly-turned-stripper (I’m getting varying reports here) just texted me to let me know that Phish is on Fallon tonight

is it wrong for me to try and turn any of that to my advantage?

  4. HarryHood Says:

Is this guy really still alive? This amazes me

  5. SillyWilly Says:

  9. SillyWilly Says:

i think fallon is legitimately nervous meeting keith richards…he’s star struck.

  10. SillyWilly Says:

    @Chef

Im not good at advice like that, man.

    I always play it conservatively.

    dont get burned.

  11. She Divides Says:

@Silly– good luck with your finals btw. My husband is a 3E with 1 more exam this year. Can’t wait for him to be done!

  12. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I wonder if Phish’s selection of Exile last fall in some way caused the Stones to re-issue the album.

  13. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

that is a cyborg on set being interviewed. the six million dollar man. not the man who played guitar and did heroin for years. can’t be

  14. SillyWilly Says:

    @she divides

    tell him congratulations!

    i can only imagine graduating.

  15. She Divides Says:

@silly–well, he is a night student and works full time so he actually has 1 more year before graduation. I can’t even imagine how excited I’ll be when he’s totally done! At this point I’m just really excited for him to be off for the summer, and the summer in general!

  16. SillyWilly Says:

oh wow, she divides, that sounds pretty intense for him.

kudos for all the support you must provide.

Not living with my girl is a blessing in a way because I simply couldn’t give her as much time as I would like

  17. SillyWilly Says:

    LL Cool J….on Phish tour?

  18. She Divides Says:

He’s definitely amazing. His ability to focus on his studies continually impresses me. But with every year he gets better at knowing what he really needs to do to succeed in class, and as a result he has had more time for relaxing with me and our friends. the first year was definitely the worst.

  19. SillyWilly Says:

In 12 hours my first years done!

  20. SillyWilly Says:

And yeah thats what every one keeps telling me, she divides.

I’ve seen it already from last semester to this: i know what i have to read and what i don’t have to and how to prepare and what not to do.

  21. yanzlow Says:

I’ll give fallon or at least nbc credit…Richards, LL, Dr. John, The Roots, and Phish all on one show? That’s like a festival lineup 🙂

  22. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

havent watched Fallon before (his show that is) but its good tonight

  23. She Divides Says:

Very exciting for you to be almost be done with year 1 silly! Congrats! And yes–that’s exactly it–you learn what you need to do reading/studying wise to do well.

    @ yanzlow–hell yea–what a line up!

  24. She Divides Says:

and of course they are holding phish out until the end!!

  25. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I wonder about the biggie-sit in with the Roots. I bet he’s a fan.
