Ten Tunes For Friday

8.2.09 (G.Lucas)

With under a month left until Summer 2010, each Friday inches us ever closer to new Phish music. Until then, each week we can focus on the relics from the past with ten more tunes. Enjoy the music, and enjoy the weekend!

Auld Lang Syne > Disease Jam > Split” 12.31.93 III

Arguably the greatest splash into the new year that Phish has ever pulled off, debuting the cathartic “Disease” jam before anyone knew the song. “Down With Disease” would be unveiled in ’94’s first show in Burlington.

Antelope” 12.6.97 I

During Fall ’97, Phish looked through a lens of funk grooves, transposing their vision on any and every song. Here’s a dancy first set example from Auburn Hills.

Mike’s Song” 11.7.98 I

1998 was the last consistently great year for “Mike’s Songs,” and this dark-horse version that all-but opened UIC’s three-night stand, moves from militant rhythms into a blissful second jam to balance things out.

Last Sloth: 08.15.09, but before that 07.31.03. So maybe mine isn’t a true bustout.

    Alumni Blues: 07.24.99

    Shaggy Dog: 10.29.95

  2. Guyute711 Says:

Buried Alive!! Don’t know the last time they played it but I haven’t seen it in 65 shows.

  3. Kaveh Says:

    last Buried Alive: 06.05.09

  4. Kaveh Says:

The Helping Friendly App is sweet for this!

  5. verno329 Says:

    @T3PO Done and done.

For my money, I don’t know if it gets any better than when he sings “When a Man Loves a Woman”.

    What movie?

  6. Mr.Palmer Says:

It would be tough to get a bigger bustout in ’10 than Curtis Lowe was in ’09

  7. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I fell off the wagon officially (without realizing it) the first time I missed a hometown show. I was living in Atlanta when Phish scheduled a double header there for July 3 and 4. I was trying to close on my first house that summer and the wife and I decided that we weren’t spending any money on anything else. So I missed those two shows. No biggie. Then I missed Oak Mountain in Birmingham that fall because of work. Then, when Phish returned to Atlanta the next summer, it just didn’t register on my radar screen. Most of my Phish friends had started buying houses, having kids, getting busy at work, etc. and I guess I felt the same way. When they took the hiatus, it didn’t really affect me. Then they broke up for good, and I figured “that was that.”

Fast-forward a few years and much in my life had changed, then I hear rumours tha Phish is returning. I ask my new wife, who had never seen them, and who had some inkling that I used to be into them, if she wanted to go and she was up for it. She had no idea what she was about to unleash.

It’s been FULL ON since early last year. And I feel 25 again.

Thank you Phish for returning healthy.

    Office Space

  9. Kaveh Says:

@ Mr Palmer: Curtis Lowe was a massive one!

  10. gratefulcub Says:

    Mr. P,

Well played, “As long as it isn’t an opener” 8)

    And,

You stole my bustout – Izabella. No idea why they didn’t bring that back in their year of rock n roll, it was the perfect fit.

    My wish list:
Split Open and Melt (I have a newfound love of the song)
    Scents
    Simple
Antelope as I stand next to Neemor
Ghost (because I always want to hear Ghost, why would that change?)

    Bustout:
    Oh! Sweet Nuthin’
I know they played it plenty last year, but not for me, and it may be my favorite song (as in, on an album in a studio)

  11. EL Duderino Says:

@ Marshall. Spartanburg yet is where its at.@ Palmer. Make that 11 dvd’s. Power went out an hour ago, doing this from phone. 🙁 91 degrees today in Raleigh.

  12. Kaveh Says:

Since The Sloth was played last year: new bustout: Kung: 06.17.04 was the last one.

  13. Lycanthropist Says:

where’s my Spocks Brain or I Saw it Again?

  14. gratefulcub Says:

^My wishlist looks like I just don’t want to be disappointed on Christmas morning.

Mom: “What do you want from your great uncle Bernie?”
Me: “hmmm, how about socks, or maybe underwear?”

  15. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

This 31 minutes Bathtub Gin has got some juice. Dank.

  16. verno329 Says:

    @[NT]M correctamundo!

And hang on tight for that Gin. It is a monster

  17. garretc Says:

I’d be down to catch an Inlaw Josie Wales bustout!

Haven’t played it since the penultimate show of 1.0, 114 shows…

  18. EL Duderino Says:

Dog Log, Camel Walk, Mound, Weigh, Magilla, Manteca, She Smoked My Pole.

  19. verno329 Says:

That Gin is so different from the rest of Fall ’97 since there really isn’t much funky danceable grooves to it, just straight ahead mean, growling Phish. Damn, I wish I had the player with me that has that one on it.

  20. pagesidehighschool Says:

biggest bustout of ’10 would be if they played Prep School Hippie. my favorite 80’s phish song that they’ll never play. that or fuck your face

  21. garretc Says:

Or some more Low Rider jams this summer, perhaps?

  22. Mr.Palmer Says:

Spock’s Brain- great call @ Lycan..

  23. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

    Letter from Jimmy Page

  24. EL Duderino Says:

Low Riders are.for WSP fans. Now a Brickhouse Jam in YEM again would be sweet. Prep School Hippie would be a bust out of the last 3 decades almost.

  25. yanzlow Says:

    Bustout: Lushington!
