Ten Tunes For Friday

Red Rocks '09 (G. Lucas)

Don’t try doing the math today because nothing adds up to ten. But it is Friday, and we have ten central tunes to take up some of the day. This week I tried to switch up the song choices a bit, going for a fresh vibe. Also, these selections focus on the late ’90s with a dash of post-hiatus. Enjoy the tunes, and. as always, enjoy the weekend! (Song titles double as download links.)

Tube” 2.22.03 II

A bumpin’ version that kicked off the final set of Cincy’s two-night stand on Phish’s first tour back from their break.

Timber > Simple” 11.16.97 II

McNichols Arena

A dark piece of improv, “Timber” moves into a gorgeous section of melodic resolution before an energetic transition into “Simple” overtakes the arena. This was part of a strong second set that gets rightfully overshadowed by the musical mastery of the following show at McNichols.

The Curtain > Tweezer” 11.12.95 II

A dynamic, multi-tiered excursion from Gainesville, Florida during Fall ’95. Page leads the initial segment of the piece while Trey hops onto his kit. But when he steps back onto guitar, it’s some of the more uplifting music you’ll hear. A truly great version through and through.

It’s Ice > Velvet Sea” 9.20.00 II

"It's Ice" (Unk)

In the middle of Cincinatti’s second set, Phish went deep in the subterranean section of “It’s Ice.” The stanza’s centerpiece drifted into the most interesting version of the song I’ve ever heard. A section of awesome improv sees Trey move from guitar to keys, toying with many of his signature licks.

Frankie Says” 12.28.03 I

Amidst a heavy first set of Miami ’03’s New Year’s run, “Frankie Says” brought the surprise psychedelia.

Emotional Rescue > Split” 11.21.97 I

The comedic opener of Hampton ’97 moved from humor to funk, and eventually into a dark and twisting “Split.” Things were officially underway.

Oooh, a very cool, eclectic looking list of tunes today Mr. Miner!

All I need to do is write this damn paper and I’ve got a clear two weeks until finals, then two weeks until I’m back east for the Phish…

I can feel it in the air! Summer’s just around the corner!

  2. Willowed Says:

    I heart Trey loops

  3. garretc Says:

    I heart fruit loops

    And feedback loops

    And loop-de-loops

And… I’m done. Should be sleeping… Stupid paper gettin’ my brain all riled up and shit…

    Good night/morning!

So we hired five new people at work. One of the new guys came into my office earlier this week and noticed my Woosta Centrum Poster on the wall (1997). His jaw dropped. Come to find out we hired a phanner.
Of course we immediately bonded. He’s hitting up 7 shows this tour etc, etc…
We continued to discuss the boys and he made numerous references to 93-94 as the best years. He’s 40 so that seems to be the thought process (I am 34). He also made this comment…”Phish jumped the shark in 97″. One his favorite tours since seeing the boys. I almost slapped him. He also mentioned 2009 was huge with the tight directed jamming so he is not a loss. 2009 was one his favorite tours since seeing the boys.
1997-1998 are my personal favorites (I dig the funk).
Needles to say we have been debating ever since. It’s fun to have someone at work to do this with.
I have turned him on to this site. Let’s see if he posts.

  5. Willowed Says:

I have a typo up there. fter the comment “jumped the shark” I ment to delet the “favorite tour” comment.
I hope that doesn’t confuse anyone.

    mornin’ all

    @willowed
just be careful you don’t cross the streams of work and here too much. wouldn’t want you to lose your “edge” if you were wondering who else from your workplace knows about your life here.

  7. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    ^
and my comment seems a little paranoid. I only meant that there are probably certain things you feel free to talk about here that you wouldn’t want those in your workplace to know about.

  8. Willowed Says:

I completely get what your saying TIII. He’s not really a computer guy so I have a feeling he won’t be around too much!

One more thing. All the guys listed on the BB Meetup page for the gathering prior to Hartford (Willowed’s BBQ), I sent you all a note this a.m. with my contact info.

If you want to do the Hartford meetup at my place, just sign up and I will shoot you my info!!

    It’s getting closer!!!!

  12. St8 of mind Says:

    Miner-

Thank you for switching up the songs a bit. Your selections are great!

  13. Dbone Says:

that timber>simple and the entire second set of the first night in Denver were for a long time one of my favorite sets/songs. Part of it was that I had a pretty transcendental experience during that set (not so much the first one with the banjo guest), but then it also held up on tape. There was a flow to that set with transitions and what not that make it one whole musical idea composed of many different but related thoughts for 60 minutes or whatever it was. The Hood is awesome from that, the digital delay loop into Wilson was amazing and the timber>simple is great.

I’ve always thought it should/could technically been listed as Timber>simplejam>simple as the uplifting jam out of timber has always had clear elements of what you usually hear from an extended simple jam.

Looking forward to the rest of the jams too.

miner – throwin down on that Cincy Riverbend show! Freakin rainy and windy and cold. I thought the speakers were going to blow off the stage. That show was just weird to me. I need to give it another listen. I recall the first set being better than the second. The first never let up really. It was the strangest second set I’ve seen or heard. They threw in the water/ice themed songs due to the rain and cold, but it was a very odd flow. i’ll admit to not being a big fan of LimbXLimb and Guyute, so that played a part for my feelings. but the Ice>Wading>Sand was real nice, as was the BBFCFM, Drowned segment.

  15. El Duderino Says:

    Morning Folks :/

  16. gratefulcub Says:

The Cincy Tube brings a big smile to my face, it is one of those vivid memories of mine. The boys were on stage, but not playing yet, I guess they noodled a couple of notes getting ready, and my buddy yells at me:

    “IT’S TUUUUUBE!!”

Something had taken over his soul. He yelled it as if we were in a trench in France and he was yelling that the Germans were coming, it was intense.

As we put on our most confused faces, he was already dancing :one finger in the air with fist pumps, both legs pumping like he was going somewhere: Just was we got ready to ask WTF………”Star Crashed!!!!”

    “I SAID, IT’S TUUUUUBE!!!”

  17. gratefulcub Says:

emoticon fail. That was meant to be “:one”, but there’s nothing like an accidental smile in the morning.

  18. mrfergie Says:

Morning everyone – been mostly absent/lurking as of late just due to the absolute craziness that my job is right now. I woirk in the Training and Development department for a fairly large insurance company and we were hit pretty hard by layoffs about a year and a half, well almost two years ago now – for a while there wasn’t enough work, and then stuff started to pile in, and now we have more work than bodies with no hope for a rescue. This is really just a long winded way of saying, thank god for ttff and this board because it’s the only thing keeping my spirit high at work right now…

  19. Mr.Palmer Says:

    Morning BB, happy friday!

  20. gratefulcub Says:

Riverbend was the only Phish show that I didn’t really enjoy. I tried, but soaking wet in whipping winds and dropping temperatures, I was just pretending to have a good time.

I came prepared, I had rain gear that would have saved my night, but I gave it to a non phishy girl that was with us to keep her from being miserable. Chivalry. I would not regret that decision if she hadn’t bolted to the car 3 songs into the rain.

  21. Mr.Palmer Says:

It rained at every show i saw last summer. Hoping for better luck w/ the weather this summer.

  22. El Duderino Says:

    Was this before Mrs/ Gcub?

If so, did she at least take care of you later??? 😉

  23. El Duderino Says:

    @ Palmer

    That’s pretty horrible luck.

    How many shows and where?

Rain + extreme heat = coolio

    Rain+ cold = BEAT

  24. El Duderino Says:

The market is down 374 points this morning???

  25. Mr.Palmer Says:

Fenway(rained pre show), JB2 , JB3( 50 degress, windy and cold rain, the worst.) SPAC ( downpour), and then in the Fall @ albany it started raining on our walk to the venue. I’ll stop complaining now.

I’ll take weather like today. In NJ its 82 and not a cloud in the sky. Thats tour weather. not too hot ( i sweat like Patrick Ewing on the foul line)
