Ten Tunes For Friday

Red Rocks '09 (G. Lucas)

Don’t try doing the math today because nothing adds up to ten. But it is Friday, and we have ten central tunes to take up some of the day. This week I tried to switch up the song choices a bit, going for a fresh vibe. Also, these selections focus on the late ’90s with a dash of post-hiatus. Enjoy the tunes, and. as always, enjoy the weekend! (Song titles double as download links.)

Tube” 2.22.03 II

A bumpin’ version that kicked off the final set of Cincy’s two-night stand on Phish’s first tour back from their break.

Timber > Simple” 11.16.97 II

McNichols Arena

A dark piece of improv, “Timber” moves into a gorgeous section of melodic resolution before an energetic transition into “Simple” overtakes the arena. This was part of a strong second set that gets rightfully overshadowed by the musical mastery of the following show at McNichols.

The Curtain > Tweezer” 11.12.95 II

A dynamic, multi-tiered excursion from Gainesville, Florida during Fall ’95. Page leads the initial segment of the piece while Trey hops onto his kit. But when he steps back onto guitar, it’s some of the more uplifting music you’ll hear. A truly great version through and through.

It’s Ice > Velvet Sea” 9.20.00 II

"It's Ice" (Unk)

In the middle of Cincinatti’s second set, Phish went deep in the subterranean section of “It’s Ice.” The stanza’s centerpiece drifted into the most interesting version of the song I’ve ever heard. A section of awesome improv sees Trey move from guitar to keys, toying with many of his signature licks.

Frankie Says” 12.28.03 I

Amidst a heavy first set of Miami ’03’s New Year’s run, “Frankie Says” brought the surprise psychedelia.

Twist > Slave” 7.4.00 II

July 4th

The triumphant final suite of of Phish’s stand out second set on the 4th of July in Camden, NJ.

Emotional Rescue > Split” 11.21.97 I

The comedic opener of Hampton ’97 moved from humor to funk, and eventually into a dark and twisting “Split.” Things were officially underway.

  2. El Duderino Says:

    That’s what I thought but wasn’t sure.

Palmer…your not headed south this summer tour are you?

  3. stitchstash Says:

    good morning

I had to skip right to Emotional Rescue, I’ve been craving this song.

  4. sumodie Says:

I guess if I’m going to the same show as Mr. Palmer I should bring rain gear. (Why didn’t you let us know last year? I about froze at Fenway last year!)

In sunnier news, I’m off to see Neil Young tonight at the Hanover Theater in Woosta MA

Funny Dude. No’s across the board. Mrs. Cub was Miss Something Else, but I had dibs on it. This was a girl I had known since I was about 5, when she was 2. She was my first ‘girlfriend’. As in, when I was in 3rd grade, and she was in 1st, she sent me a love letter (mom still has it). She spelled my name Brain, common mistake.

We even kissed once. It was icky, cuz she had coodies and all.

Somehow, the future Mrs. Cub current SLF was able to overlook our crazy past and not be jealous 😉

  6. Mr.Palmer Says:

No southern swing for me. I would love to do it at some point. Not this tour though. Have to straighten some work related stuff out so i can’t commit to much travel. My summer tour will comprise of venues within a 2-3 hour driving radius. I am fortunate enough that i can still see 5 shows. Very thankful for that.

  7. El Duderino Says:

    @ gcub

I bet your mommy thought that was cute? cooties!

  8. gratefulcub Says:

It’s worse than that Dude, my mom and her mom were still trying to hook us up when I was 25, in college, and she had a 2 year old daughter.

Small town moms don’t always realize that the dating pool is bigger than the people you share a party line with.

  9. El Duderino Says:

Here is a new/second source for Trey @ The Hangout Festival…

  10. gratefulcub Says:

^ and yes, I had to take a couple of years off to make tuition money, so 25 as I graduated college.

  11. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I’m a “Brain” too. I treat it as a freudian slip from people. obviously, they can’t get over how wicked smaht I am so they spell my name brain. that has to be it, right?

  12. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

is there no source for the trey show from the stream??

  13. El Duderino Says:

    @ gcub

    Funny shit.

Mom’s don’t always have the best taste in women for their sons. Thank god my mom didn’t try that shit.

  14. tela'smuff Says:

Cincy Tube>Gin was one of the better one-two punches of 2003. Had they not dropped Friday on us, that show could have been epic.

That Gin is worth mentioning in any Top Version discussion. It lifts off after Trey pegs some dude in the face with a glowstick, which I witnessed from my behind the stage vantage point. You can hear on the SB’s where he reacts to just lighting the kid up. Hilarious. The end of that Gin with Page and Trey interlocked in this weird computer funk thing. So sick.

  15. gratefulcub Says:

T3, that’s the only possible idea I have come up with, and considering how smart I am, there must not be another theory or I would have thought of it already. It is tough to type with these mango hands.

  16. El Duderino Says:

    @ gcub

I didn’t go back to college to finish my last 2 years until I was 31. Better late than never.

  17. El Duderino Says:

    @ DancingFool

I’m on demon and usually that’s where that kinda material materializes, but nothing so far. I’m hoping someone was able to capture the video/sbd audio and torrent it on dvd like the last Trey i-clips stream for St. Louis

  18. Mr.Palmer Says:

@ Sumo- bring a parka or 2 to SPAC this year! Just sayin…..

  19. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    what’s demon? demonoid?

  20. El Duderino Says:

  21. stitchstash Says:

What are you talking about El Dude? I’ll pick a great wife for my son.

  22. fee4zy Says:

I don’t even look at what the market is doing when it is bad. I’m better off pretending that my portfolio is fine. I’m not going to jump ship anyway, so ignorance is bliss. On the other hand, when the market is going well, then I check all the time.

  23. KWL Says:

    morning everyone

like the pics today Miner, looking forward to digging in!

  24. Dr. Pronoia Says:

@ Cub & TIII: Another “brain” here….(I’m a Brien so my name is constantly butchered)

  25. Axilla Scent Says:

Good way to start a friday! good picks…
