Minerese: Vol. I

11.20.09 (W.Rogell)

With tour just around the corner, I’ll be writing reviews of Phish shows again before too long, and for that I am grateful. While considering my reviews, I thought a good way to change things up and prepare for tour would be to look more closely at some of my more commonly-used phrases when describing Phish music. In an attempt to make my writing clearer for those reading along this summer, I’ve created some audio excerpts to serve as aural definitions of some terms. Today we’ll start with five basic terms, and I’ll put together a couple more installments of “Minerese” before tour starts.

***

“Percussive Grooves”

Often growing out of high-speed rock jams, these are the sparser segments where all band members offer rhythmic phrases in unison with each other. When traced back to its origin, this type of jamming grew out of Halloween ’96’s adventure, Remain In Light.

“Ambient Soundscapes”

11.21.09 (W.Rogell)

Built from layers of sound, these passages can take different forms. While often drifting into spacey realms, “ambient soundscapes” can also remain anchored to harmonies and/or melodies. I’ve tried to select differing examples to illustrate this difference.

“Blissful Psychedelia”

Emerging deep within a jam, these are the sacred places that Phish reaches after the initial segment of improv has settled. Pieces of unique music that reach deep into the soul, segments described as “blissful psychedelia” evoke the emotions and majesty associated with the magic of Phish.

“Amoeba Jamming”

An Amoeba

This is a term I coined years ago when trying to describe those musical passages where nobody is truly leading the jam. Each member pushes and pulls the music ever so slightly, creating an “amoeba-like” dynamic of non-linear improv. These jams can also take differing directions, so I, again, tried to choose different examples.

“Swank Rhythm Licks”

When Trey is feeling his funk-mojo, he’s one of the best rhythm players around. Taking time away from soaring solos, Big Red slices and dices dance grooves like the Iron Chef does meats and vegetables. Check out these vibrant late ’90s examples of Trey getting down with his bad self.

Piper” 10.2.99 II

After “Tweezer > On Your Way Down,” Phish was hardly done jamming at Minneapolis’  Target Center in ’99. In a year that saw many an amazing “Piper,” this version is among the upper echelon.

    The equation was:

Sharon Jones + Hot weather + Montreal women = !!!!

  4. Chuck D Says:

    Kaya

Rumors China wants to get out of their Euro sovereign holdings tanked the Euro into the close and so went the S&P
    Very ugly close. Very sloppy.

News driven sketchy market. Without that shit coming out we probably hold it.
The natural trend I think is down.

I can’t see us not trying to see if we hold 1044 again.

I’d probably just stay away until we break through that or consolidate here for a while.
We need to get some volume going to the upside to prove we are holding here.

Hedge funds aren’t really buying but don’t seem scared as shit either

Geithner has been urging Euro to stress test their banks and do a bailout
Could always be some big news to the upside.

Like I said between 1050 and 1080 we are kind of stuck in no man’s land.
I’d probably just chill but what the fuck do I know

Could play it short for the retest but that seems like picking up pennies on the highway to some extent

  6. butter Says:

why do you hate Samson Miner? is it the biblical aspect or what?

  7. Frankie Says:

Where is that Chuck? My suitcase is ready… ahaha!

  8. albert walker Says:

I can post it here later

but the OG preacher versions of Samson on solo acoustic are $$

some of the coolest renditions of any song you will ever hear

don’t know about Bobby’s versions though

“Hey Kids You Know It’s Sunday!”

  9. Frankie Says:

Maybe you’re referring to Wreck Beach in Vancouver which is a nudist beach but i’m sure there is as much good naked as bad naked there…

  10. butter Says:

i was pumped for Sunday Samson’s, in the 90’s the rhythm devils where holding it down still and that tune showcased ’em

  11. Frankie Says:

AW! Love those Orchestre Poly-Rythmo recordings! Thanks a lot! 🙂

  12. Jtran Says:

Spinning Mike’s Groove from 5/8/93 while I make some dinner tonight. First time listening.

  13. Jtran Says:

Also, I’m glad people think Bobby songs/voice are a little off. I thought I was alone. Definitely FF most of them when I’m listening to the Dead.

  14. Chuck D Says:

    boobies. yaay.

    leave it to wiki:

The Topfree Equal Rights Association (TERA) is a Canadian organization with an interest in helping women in both Canada and the United States who have legal troubles when going topless where men are able to.

    * Some provinces of Canada have topfree equality by law, although whether such equality is practiced varies. including
    o British Columbia
o Ontario (where equality has been tested and upheld several times)

  15. Chuck D Says:

the movement is known as “topfreedom”, and I’m in favor.

  16. butter Says:

the bandwagoners are out and about in Chi for the Blackhawks, huh AW?

my dad called and said “son, i really really love the Blackhawks, and have been watching all the games”

anyway he wants to go to a game, don’t think i can swing it tho, and i’m not skipping Phish for game 7

i’m just on the other end of the phone thinking , wtf, we never watched hockey , at all growing up. (we are die hard White Sox and Bears, Bulls )

i was at game 4 of our sweep of Houston in 2005, my dad skipped it and i don’t think he wants to miss the Hawks make history. (even if he’s a bandwagoner, but at least he doesn’t switch cities , all Chicago)

  17. garretc Says:

I sure do love me some Mike Gordon Band

  18. El Duderino Says:

    Miner hates Samson and Delilah?

I just lost a lot of respect right there.

The Dude is lookin’ down at the ground shakin’ his head.

Today’s post insults the intelligence of people who read this blog.

  22. whole tour! Says:

    i’m neither intelligent…nor am i insulted. lol

  23. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:

Bobby has an awkward voice true, it works sometimes, true
Great odd rhythm guitar player, very true. His retardedly big hands allow him to voice chords in ways than nobody else does…
Major Cheese ball, also very true
He was prob the most affected by the whole journey of the band as he was the youngest…
Show me a Good Bobby Tune and Ill show you a terrible one, which sorta means it cancels it self out…
Thank God Mickey Hart didnt sing…
As for Brent, I use to feel like he was a major cheeseball too, but if you transport yourself to the times, he had that 80s power pop ballad
voice to help the boys out (debatable) but at the time it wouldnt have stuck out as much to your ears… Good Keyboardist, worst tones, again somewhat related to the mentality of the era… He also brought that pigpen rap back…
but Keith was the greatest too bad his wife casted a big shadow over him…
    and the other guy….well….

this is just coming from a listener fan, never saw the boys

  24. bouncin fan Says:

    Kaya

China cutting back on euro debt exposure tanked the euro and down went the s&p

I would just chill between 1050 and 1080 but lay it on if we break through

    Below get short above long

The panic selling has left and we need to find direction

Until we get some volume support on a up day I would say the trend is south

    I don’t like guessing
I’d wait till the obvious trend picks up
The money was made on the 17% correction and its in no man’s land waiting for another catalyst to push it

  25. flarrdogg Says:

I consider myself to be of moderate intelligence and was highly uninsulted by today’s post. Keep in mind, this is coming from a guy that thinks ‘uninsulted’ should be a word.
