Ten Tunes For Friday

Hampton '09 (J.Volckhausen)

Another week in the books, and summer tour is but two away. Today is one of the last few installments of Ten Tunes before the music begins to flow in earnest. The time is almost upon us. But while we’re waiting, here are some jams to enhance your Friday. Happy Memorial Day weekend folks, the summer season officially starts now.

Bathtub Gin > 2001” 12.2.99 II

This sequence served as the centerpiece of the first second set of December ’99.

David Bowie” 11.20.94 II

A ferocious jam set the table for the all-timer the following week in Minneapolis.

Halley’s > Hood” 2.24.03 II

12.29.09 (W.Rogell)

After an incredibly (read: too) long sit-in from BB King slowed the first set to a crawl, this sequence picked up the action to start the second set in style. And post-hiatus “Hoods” began to grow.

Stash” 12.29.95 I

A phenomenal version that capped a vintage year for “Stash.”

Tweezer” 11.11.96 II

Only weeks after Remain In Light one can already hear Phish beginning to focus on rhythmic grooves. Segments of this jam sound like they could be plucked from ’97.

Split Open and Melt” 12.28.95 I

There was no better way to kick off what many believe to be the greatest New Year’s Run of all-time in 1995.

Antelope 8.12.96 I

Creek '04Deer Creek “Antelopes” and Alpine “Tweezers,” timeless Midwestern staples of summer tour. This aggressive “Antelope” showed up in the first set of ’96’s first show, setting the tone for a stellar two nights in the cornfields of Noblesville.

YEM” 10.31.09 III

Indio’s celebratory, and rather large, Halloween “YEM;” one of ’09’s better versions.

I hope people didn’t get to the show late for that one!

  2. zzyzx Says:

The Living Daylights are tied in with a certain time of my life, the late 90s when Rockin’ Teenage Combo and them would play every weekend in weird projects. Dara and Jessica and Skerik with 3-4 other people. Ah a golden age…

  3. Chonz Says:

Fringe is my new LOST substitute as well. Nothing will ever take the place of LOST, but Walter Bishop is probably my favorite TV character ever.

  4. voopa Says:

Yes! A Rob/Mike duel would kill.

…and I was late to 4/15/99. Didn’t get in until the set 1 closer UJB. It was tax day, and looking back, I should have just applied for a damn extension.

  5. willowed Says:

That sucks Voop. I had no idea you were there. I would not have made that ‘late” comment. It’s like pouring salt in the wounds.

    Sorry brother!

  6. voopa Says:

    No big.

I only found out that I was going like 3 hours before show time. One of my friends was the only one in our crew to score any tickets, and he just got night one. He got panicked and decided to bail at the last minute when he realized he’d be going solo, so he called me and offered the ticket. I about pooped.

Which reminds me, I’ll gladly take any extra Greeks off of peeps hands! Let me know! No poop included!

  7. willowed Says:

One Greek with a side of poop…better yet, hold the poop and double down on the peepee.

  8. willowed Says:

    Ok Boys and Girls,
I am off to happy hour. I hope to check in once and a while this weekend, but if I don’t……
    Make this weekend your bitch!!

    Viola sickest opener ever

All questions of how sick the run would be immediately answered

Steve and trey together is about needed to fill jerry’s shoes

    Epic not epoch

  11. Mr.Miner Says:

will have to grab that ‘97 UIC show, too. never heard it.

^^ because it never happened 😉

  12. voopa Says:

Must be the start of a holiday weekend…

Have a good one everyone! I’ll be checking in from time to time. Still have 90 minutes left in the office. Argh!

  13. Frankie Says:

Have a great weekend fellas! Here’s a little funky party soundtrack from my DJ buddy! Enjoy! 🙂

    Shake It!

bouncin’- I quit my job to make those Warfield shows happen…and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Recently relistened to all three and they hold up as absolutely epic to me. Great quality too-sbds circulating of all three.

Miner- You should reveal the songs that included the jam segments from last two days of posts….please.

KP- Agree that the new Black Keys record is excellent. In the past I felt like a bit of a sellout whenever I listened to “popular” music. These days, I don’t give a shit. If it’s good, it’s good. Brothers is damn good. Am I more mainstream because I feel this way? Maybe. Do I care? Nope.

  15. flarrdogg Says:

I watched the first season of Heroes and that it was laughably bad. Seriously, I lol’d at the absurdity of everything in that show. Terrible, but I did make it through the first season.

Different strokes. By the way…RIP Gary Coleman. That man was a national treasure.

First Duvel of a great weekend. Happy holiday to all.

  18. flarrdogg Says:

Anyone? Just got finished with school for the weekend and I’m looking for some dialogue. Lokks like I’ll have to stumble out into the world. Maybe I’ll just confer with my sock puppet, Pancho Villa.

Have a super duper weekend all.

acces me & nothing are chick songs fo sho. access me is actually the password to all my girlfriends websites. pretty clever. she’s not even a fan, but loves undermind (the album).

  20. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

12.12.99- Hartford has very mashed up setlists. I love it when Makisupa shows up that late in the night.

  21. guyforget Says:

TM – should’ve sprinked that mix with BBFCFM, Hahaha & Carini, just to keep her on her toes and awake

  22. guyforget Says:

or should i say “not TM”

  23. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

@ guyf – assume that was in re: my earlier post. Just need to say that my wife likes a lot of Phish. I decided to put some of the most pop-frendly Phish songs on her iPod just because Ive never gone down that route before.

But she loves AC/DC Bag and David Bowie too. She’s cool with just about all of it really. A faithful companion to say the least.

  24. voopa Says:

Old guys that don’t understand how computers work that use computers for a living really piss me off. Thanks for giving me an extra crapload of work right before a holiday weekend, jerkface!

  25. guyforget Says:

I got you NTM. i was being sarcastic!!
