Ten Tunes For Friday

Hampton '09 (J.Volckhausen)

Another week in the books, and summer tour is but two away. Today is one of the last few installments of Ten Tunes before the music begins to flow in earnest. The time is almost upon us. But while we’re waiting, here are some jams to enhance your Friday. Happy Memorial Day weekend folks, the summer season officially starts now.

Bathtub Gin > 2001” 12.2.99 II

This sequence served as the centerpiece of the first second set of December ’99.

David Bowie” 11.20.94 II

A ferocious jam set the table for the all-timer the following week in Minneapolis.

Halley’s > Hood” 2.24.03 II

12.29.09 (W.Rogell)

After an incredibly (read: too) long sit-in from BB King slowed the first set to a crawl, this sequence picked up the action to start the second set in style. And post-hiatus “Hoods” began to grow.

Stash” 12.29.95 I

A phenomenal version that capped a vintage year for “Stash.”

Tweezer” 11.11.96 II

Only weeks after Remain In Light one can already hear Phish beginning to focus on rhythmic grooves. Segments of this jam sound like they could be plucked from ’97.

Split Open and Melt” 12.28.95 I

There was no better way to kick off what many believe to be the greatest New Year’s Run of all-time in 1995.

Antelope 8.12.96 I

Creek '04Deer Creek “Antelopes” and Alpine “Tweezers,” timeless Midwestern staples of summer tour. This aggressive “Antelope” showed up in the first set of ’96’s first show, setting the tone for a stellar two nights in the cornfields of Noblesville.

YEM” 10.31.09 III

Indio’s celebratory, and rather large, Halloween “YEM;” one of ’09’s better versions.

    sorry Leo I spaced out
    glad u figured it out!

  2. Jtran Says:

I’d be real interested in a SPAC meet up, either night works, but I’ll be there alone Saturday, so I’d rather do that night and make some friends.

Just put my name on the spreadsheet for the Camden meet up. I’ll have a friend in tow if that’s cool.

  3. HarryHood Says:

    @ Jtran

There are a bunch of us all getting together on Saturday. Just not sure where yet. We should probably get the ball rolling on this one.

  4. gratefulcub Says:

Funny Tela. That is on the Bluegrass Parkway between my home in Louisville and my roots west of Paducah.

  5. El Duderino Says:

    @ gcub

The Special Lady Friend is gonna be travelin’ to Lexington for work for quite awhile now. She’s consulting at LexMark I guess.

  6. Leo Weaver Says:

    Bluegrass Parkway…such a beautiful drive…

  7. Jtran Says:

Sounds great! If you can remember, keep me in the loop.

  8. tela'smuff Says:

@grateful – werd. yeah, my roots are out of Cleaton, KY. We actually stay in Powderly. I’ll fish Kentucky Lake and Lake Monroe all weekend. Can’t wait. And yes, i do love the Bluegrass Parkway.

  9. El Duderino Says:

    @ Leo

Are you sure your not mixing up Bluegrass Parkway with the Blue Ridge Parkway???

  10. DocGanz Says:

Whats up guys? Can’t stay long but wanted to jump on and see how everyone’s doing. Got a 1-2 punch of my girl’s peeps for going on 2 1/2 weeks now, keeping me off the board here and struggling to keep my Sanity. Holy Houseguests. It’s the company equivalent of the Albany Seven Below> Ghost, but nowhere near as cool. (Read: Best Friends > Mom & Sister). Lost my mind just a coupla times. Only the thought of Phish run in a few weeks is holding me together.

  11. voopa Says:

  12. HarryHood Says:

    @ Jtran

For sure man. I’ll see if I get get the spreadsheet set up. I’m still surprised that it’s not on there yet. Damn us lazy Northeasterners.

Two weeks till lift off!!!!!!!!! Who’s going to be at TP?

  15. gavinsdad Says:

@lastwaltzer: i’m 5.4 miles (15 mins) to the venue. Haddon Twp, NJ. obviously, come thru if you’ve got some time Friday afternoon.

  16. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

have a great weekend, everybody. got some stuff to do this afternoon and then it’s on to a fun filled weekend. enjoy yourselves and keep yourselves safe and happy!

  17. sanchothehutt Says:

    Willowed–no shame in that.

You should’ve seen me at Roger Waters a few years back. Laughing hysterically for 30 min until “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” sent me into dark territory. I bailed, paid a cabby $100 to take me the 2 miles back to the hotel and missed the whole Dark Side set.

Happens to the best of us.

  18. SillyWilly Says:

    2 weeks til tour!

Saw some BTB speak a page or so back…

It might be a little longer than 4 hours from Cinci to BTB Fest…If I put in the right address on Google Map its on the East Side past Blossom…It’s close to 4 hours from Dayton to Willoughby (on the east side of Cleveland). Cinci’s, depending on where you are is usually a solid 45 to an hour to Dayton.

don’t mean to be a know-it-all. I just hate it when things take longer than I planned for.

  19. Leo Weaver Says:

@dude…BlueRidge Pkwy is nice too (actually spectacular). We were in KY a few years ago and drove from Louisville to Mammoth Cave, then up to Elizabethtown, then Lexington…a lot of the drive was on the Bluegrass Pkwy. Kentucky is really a beautiful state…I had no idea until that trip.

  20. Mr. Completely Says:

hey hey I posted a big chunk of african music mixes on the last page of yesterday’s thread, check it out if you are interested

if you grabbed the stuff @albert walker posted recently you’ll have a lot of this, a lot of it is straight from his rips

basically they are my “favorites” playlists for different african styles, I upped them for a friend and thought I’d share here

basically the idea is “intro to african music” (specifically, 70s West African afrobeat, Malian music and Ethio-jazz) so peeps don’t have to do quite as much digging – I like the digging part but not everyone enjoys it so here you go – these are the tracks I have enjoyed the most out of a couple hundred that have passed through the headphones in the last few months

gonna be out of town this weekend, y’all have a good one

  21. halcyon Says:

Happy Friday and Memorial Day weekend. Respekt to those who have sacrificed their lives in the name of our military and Gov’t.

Good vibes are heading your way. My back too has taken a dive in recent days. Thought it was sympathy pain for some people I know who just had surgery, but it wasn’t. Nerve pain all over the back and legs suck.

Stretch, ice, relax, mellow motion exercises, swimming, and accupuncture seem to help for me.

  22. Leo Weaver Says:

OK…off to meet auntie em for lunch…

  23. El Duderino Says:

    @ Leo

I-64 was one of the nicest/well maintained interstates I’ve ever been on. Kentucky is nice.

  24. Leo Weaver Says:

@Mr. C…thanks for posting all that goodness last night…started DLing this morning. Safe travels and good times…

    @verno…good vibes heading your way

  25. El Duderino Says:

    Give ’em our love Leo!!!
