Ten Tunes For Friday

Hampton '09 (J.Volckhausen)

Another week in the books, and summer tour is but two away. Today is one of the last few installments of Ten Tunes before the music begins to flow in earnest. The time is almost upon us. But while we’re waiting, here are some jams to enhance your Friday. Happy Memorial Day weekend folks, the summer season officially starts now.

Bathtub Gin > 2001” 12.2.99 II

This sequence served as the centerpiece of the first second set of December ’99.

David Bowie” 11.20.94 II

A ferocious jam set the table for the all-timer the following week in Minneapolis.

Halley’s > Hood” 2.24.03 II

12.29.09 (W.Rogell)

After an incredibly (read: too) long sit-in from BB King slowed the first set to a crawl, this sequence picked up the action to start the second set in style. And post-hiatus “Hoods” began to grow.

Stash” 12.29.95 I

A phenomenal version that capped a vintage year for “Stash.”

Tweezer” 11.11.96 II

Only weeks after Remain In Light one can already hear Phish beginning to focus on rhythmic grooves. Segments of this jam sound like they could be plucked from ’97.

Split Open and Melt” 12.28.95 I

There was no better way to kick off what many believe to be the greatest New Year’s Run of all-time in 1995.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/ph1995-12-28d1t02.mp3]

***

Antelope 8.12.96 I

Creek '04Deer Creek “Antelopes” and Alpine “Tweezers,” timeless Midwestern staples of summer tour. This aggressive “Antelope” showed up in the first set of ’96’s first show, setting the tone for a stellar two nights in the cornfields of Noblesville.

YEM” 10.31.09 III

Indio’s celebratory, and rather large, Halloween “YEM;” one of ’09’s better versions.

    @ Kaveh

The latest ones have been March ’90 shows.

    3/20
    3/21
    3/24/90

    to be exact.

For those of you at the Shoreline 93 run before the Phish Greek show, as I was there for four nights of music, I just saw this, and it is the best night of the three. First night of the GD at Shoreline. Can’t go wrong with the second set!

nah Dude, actually I really liked the finale and overall I’m just satisfied with the whole Lost experience, and specifically I’m super pleased they brought it to an end and didn’t drag it out…

Killer…thanks El Dude! My holiday weekend just got better! 🙂

  9. Mr. Completely Says:

the show @Kaveh just posted – my wife was in the box seats right behind Phish for those shows. All 4 guys were there, with no entourage, just digging the shows and having a good time.

  10. Mr. Completely Says:

ya can’t freakin’ beat the Knick ’90 either. There was a weak show in there, but it’s not one of those 3 @Dude just posted.

    hey Kaveh

are you familiar with Workingman’s Tracker? You have to join, but you can filter your searches to only show Charlie Miller releases. I created a bookmark for such, and whenever you refresh it brings them up in chronological order. good stuff!

Dude can confirm but i think all of the WT torrents make their way onto bt.etree….and you could always just search for Millers there, but i recommend WT for the Dead.

  12. Kaveh Says:

I didn’t see Phish there, but the third night with seats in the Phil Zone, I saw Bill Walton a couple of rows behind us with his wife. There is a famous picture of Phil before the first set, giving our section some love; in Phil’s special way. I’ll see if I can find a link to it somewhere.

  13. voopa Says:

Too bad Phish caught one of the worst shows of the year (8/27). But thanks for the heads up on 8/25 Kaveh, that’s a good one! Almost as good as the weekend before in Oregon.

  14. halcyon Says:

What were the shows from Minerese Vol II?

  15. Kaveh Says:

    Thanks KP…I’ll look into it.

  16. Tzara's Ghost Says:

    Morning BB.

Nice Friday alone at work. Lab tests, coffee, TTFF. Hot Gin.

Maybe make it till about lunchtime or so, then beer.

  17. Tzara's Ghost Says:

Bathtub gin, that is, not hot gin in my coffee.
    Although…

  18. Mr. Completely Says:

I second the recommendation for Workingman’s. It is a no bullshit place. Easy to sign up for with none of the stupid-ass hoops to jump through a lot of private trackers have. Everything worthwhile in the Dead/Jerry world shows up there first or second among all trackers. Fantastic place. I haven’t been active there for awhile b/c I have yet to dig out of a huge HD full of FLAC GD downloads I pulled last summer, but I’m almost done listening to and burning them off the drive, and when I am and I’m ready for more Dead – WT is where I will go

  19. bouncin fan Says:

been thinking that African shit should have the best tracks pulled out and put together C

    thanks for the work

gonna have to check out your picks

anyone need Cuyahoga tix I have a pair of in the back pavillions I will be unloading for under face

  20. kenny powers Says:

    Mr C

out of curiosity, do you burn your FLACs as DVD data discs for backup, or do you convert to WAV and burn audio CDs?

i was trying to burn to CD for a while because I like to be able to pop a CD in the car stereo and have gapless playback…but the burning process became too much after my rate of downloading more shows ballooned! Not enough time to keep up!

i guess that’s a good problem to have.

  21. voopa Says:

You can fit about 4 2-set shows on 1 DVD in FLAC.

    I have hundreds.

  22. Kaveh Says:

@KP/El Dude – is there a difference between taking flac files to aiff as compared to flac files to wav? I’ve been always taking them to aiff files.

  23. El Duderino Says:

    @ Kaveh

The good thing about WAV files is that the discs you burn in WAV format will play in anything and I mean anything AIFF not so much

  24. kayatosh Says:

    what up board?

aw: thanks for the mrkt. advice from the other day. Just now catchin up on some BB readin. Shorted the high on the r2k this morn. missed the bulk of move. All cash into the weekend.

  25. Mr. Completely Says:

@bouncin, I posted those mixes far in advance of when I normally would. I’m quite certain there’s stuff on there that I won’t still consider worthy after 2 more listens, and stuff I left off that should be on there.

But I wanted to send my buddy what I have ready now, and once it’s up I always figure why not post it?

    =========

@Kenny, no, I never do that and here’s why

Basically I burn CDs a) to have them, for the car etc but also b) to make myself actually process and listen to absolutely everything I download. Once I hit a nearly full HD I make myself actually convert, listen to and (if worthy) burn every show on there. If I just dump them onto DVD I’ll never listen to half of them.

I should probably keep them so I can reseed like @voopa does. He’s awesome like that.
