Ten Tunes For Summer

6.6.09 - Great Woods (G.Lucas)

We are officially one week from 2010’s opening night in Chicago, so this will be the last installment of “Ten Tunes” until July. Sticking with the theme of tour openers, all of today’s selections come from the first show of summer tour, chronologically ordered from 1993 to 2000. Enjoy the last Friday with old Phish jams, and start preparing for new ones!

Leprechaun > Runaway Jim” 7.15.93 I

Pollock Summer '93

The debut of Trey’s serene instrumental led into a Phish classic to punctuate set one of Summer ’93 in Weedsport, New York. “Leprechaun” would only see the stage twice more in its life, both times during this summer. “Runaway Jim” continued its well-trodden path to become one of the band’s most popular songs, appearing 330 times in its career. (Currently at 14th.)

Mike’s > Hydrogen > Weekapaug” 6.9.94 II

Though Spring blended into Summer in ’94, the band took a week off after Laguna Seca Daze before returning in June in Salt Lake City, Utah.  This “Mike’s Groove” provided a heavy ending to a relatively lite show.

Stash” 6.7.95 I

Red Rocks '94

Opening up Summer ’95 in Boise, Idaho, Phish used this first-set “Stash” as an initiation into the many dark excursions that would characterize the tour.

Antelope” 8.2.96 II

After an extensive tour of Europe, primarily opening for Santana, Phish returned to the states for a two-week trip across the country. This “Antelope” closed the second set of ’96’s tour opener in Park City, Utah.

David Bowie” 7.21.97 II

Shoreline '97

Following a mythological tour de funk in Europe, Phish came home to Virginia Beach in one of the most anticipated tour openers ever. The stories of thick molasses dance parties traveled across the pond, and US fans were starved for a taste. This “David Bowie, however, didn’t follow the rhythmic trend, forming the psychedelic centerpiece of the second set. A tasteful quote of The Weather Report’s “Birdland” emerges in the intro.

Ghost” 6.30.98 I

The reworked version of “Ghost” kicked off Summer ’98 as the opener in Christiana’s first show. While one of the all-time great versions of the song took place in the same building only two nights later, the exploratory process started right here.

Free” 6.30.99 II

Europe '98

Like a freight train running straight through your brain, this “Free” came out of the second set-opening “Squirming Coil” and rightfully baptized Summer ’99 with its militant jam. Phish began this tour in the open-air environs of Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Tweezer” 6.9.00 II

Sparking the second set of Summer 2000, “The Tokyo Tweezer” set the tone for Japan’s excellent adventures.

  9. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

nothing like a ’94 Mike’s. that’s the stuff that made me come back again and again and again and again and one more time just to make sure and then a bunch more times after that. ain’t nothing like it.

  10. Mr.Palmer Says:

Maybe i’ll hit Hartford1….hmm. Morning all..

  11. BTB Says:

I had never heard Leprauchan before – it sounded a little incomplete which is why Trey dropped it. I dig those types of instrumentals though. He probably couldn’t fit it into another tune or where to go with it. There is always the rework…

    Get fuckin pumped…

  12. neemor Says:

    Good morning, all!

    Fiending as well.

This is going to be one to remember, kids…hope to see you all along the road!

I’ll second the Gumbo request as well as dastardly Vultures and stretched versions of Timer and Bag…

  13. willowed Says:

I’ve been waiting for that BTB. Great stuff. Not as good as the New Years one but hillarious none the less.

  14. BTB Says:

    Neemor – you’re alive!

update – got tiki torches for the fest brah. Get fucking pumped…

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    you should do that, Palmer.

nine out of ten pharmacologists* recommend getting as much real live phish in your system as possible to help stave off numerous potential ailments like scurvy, kidney disorders, cases of the Mondays, amnesia, restless leg syndrome, and the condition known as “hot dog fingers”. (the one guy who doesn’t recommend it is a michael bolton fan, so what does he know.) it’s kind of like vitamin D in that way. most of us are walking around with a phish deficiency and we don’t even know it. sleeping time bombs we are.

*statistics may not actually be valid. consult with your life coach before beginning a new phish diet to make sure that you are physically, mentally, and aurally equipped to do it right. results may vary but side effects include spontaneous joy, deep knee bending, pronoia, hugs, high fiving, and a whole lotta rockin’ out.

  16. jdub Says:

Happy Friday, I’m curious to see the PTBM ticket design.

That runaway Jim really showcased how fiercely Fishman once attacked his drum kit.

    Go get em today.

  17. willowed Says:

    That’s classic TIII

    hot dog fingers – funny

  18. SillyWilly Says:

in the words of trey monkeystasio: get fuckin’ pumped.

  19. jdub Says:

First time hearing Leprechaun as well. It sounds like a cross between Guyute and The Inlaw Josie Wales.

  20. SillyWilly Says:

I love it when Type III moves into Type III territory with his posts.

When you go to Sacred Scripture, TypeIII, is my personal favorite.

  21. albert walker Says:

  23. SillyWilly Says:

so Im probably not going to come in until tomorrow…is it cool if I look you up tomorrow?

  24. Hoedown Says:

Hey Now Everybody, good morning. I to am getting pumped. Hard to believe tour is so soon. Man spring flew by. See ya’ll at Hershey, Hartford, SPAC, Camden and Merriweather! Everyone have a great weekend.

  25. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:
