Ten Tunes For Summer

6.6.09 - Great Woods (G.Lucas)

We are officially one week from 2010’s opening night in Chicago, so this will be the last installment of “Ten Tunes” until July. Sticking with the theme of tour openers, all of today’s selections come from the first show of summer tour, chronologically ordered from 1993 to 2000. Enjoy the last Friday with old Phish jams, and start preparing for new ones!

Leprechaun > Runaway Jim” 7.15.93 I

Pollock Summer '93

The debut of Trey’s serene instrumental led into a Phish classic to punctuate set one of Summer ’93 in Weedsport, New York. “Leprechaun” would only see the stage twice more in its life, both times during this summer. “Runaway Jim” continued its well-trodden path to become one of the band’s most popular songs, appearing 330 times in its career. (Currently at 14th.)

Mike’s > Hydrogen > Weekapaug” 6.9.94 II

Though Spring blended into Summer in ’94, the band took a week off after Laguna Seca Daze before returning in June in Salt Lake City, Utah.  This “Mike’s Groove” provided a heavy ending to a relatively lite show.

Stash” 6.7.95 I

Red Rocks '94

Opening up Summer ’95 in Boise, Idaho, Phish used this first-set “Stash” as an initiation into the many dark excursions that would characterize the tour.

Antelope” 8.2.96 II

After an extensive tour of Europe, primarily opening for Santana, Phish returned to the states for a two-week trip across the country. This “Antelope” closed the second set of ’96’s tour opener in Park City, Utah.

David Bowie” 7.21.97 II

Shoreline '97

Following a mythological tour de funk in Europe, Phish came home to Virginia Beach in one of the most anticipated tour openers ever. The stories of thick molasses dance parties traveled across the pond, and US fans were starved for a taste. This “David Bowie, however, didn’t follow the rhythmic trend, forming the psychedelic centerpiece of the second set. A tasteful quote of The Weather Report’s “Birdland” emerges in the intro.

Ghost” 6.30.98 I

The reworked version of “Ghost” kicked off Summer ’98 as the opener in Christiana’s first show. While one of the all-time great versions of the song took place in the same building only two nights later, the exploratory process started right here.

Free” 6.30.99 II

Europe '98

Like a freight train running straight through your brain, this “Free” came out of the second set-opening “Squirming Coil” and rightfully baptized Summer ’99 with its militant jam. Phish began this tour in the open-air environs of Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Tweezer” 6.9.00 II

Sparking the second set of Summer 2000, “The Tokyo Tweezer” set the tone for Japan’s excellent adventures.

I think garrett is right and I could be wrong but I believe several other black boarders are down there right now.

If all goes according to plan:
    HTFD 1 and 2
    SPAC 1 and 2
    Camden 1 and 2
    and probably Finger Lakes

garrett, I’ve got room, where are you going to be staying? Any idea yet?

  3. garretc Says:

Right on, thanks amigo. Yeah, I’ll either be staying at a hostel about 5 minutes away from the venue, or when I met up w/ gavinsdad a couple weeks ago he said he may have room at his place I could crash (said you and I think mitch, maybe? were already gonna be there?)… So either way it should be real close

  4. neemor Says:

Dig it, we’re all on the same page then…
Now all I need is for the money fairy to bestow upon me the trust fund that I so richly deserve!
:::closing eyes tightly, wishing to the money fairy:::

Is male self-prositution still a faux pas?

  6. neemor Says:

garret, you’re going to have to fill me in on where to pick you up @.
I’ll be hitting home (CT) after Greatwoods before hitting the road for Camden…where will I find you?

  7. garretc Says:

I think it depends on the state neemor…

And how male one looks whilst prostituting oneself…

And the same page is always a good place for everyone to be!

So in a strange turn of events I decided on Wednesday to get a plane ticket to chicago for my lady’s bday/tour opener…when she told her mom I was coming for phish, her mom asked for a listening recommendation. Figured I’d go straight for the jugular, Tube 12.7.97 lmao

  9. garretc Says:

I’m flying into the Philly airport late Friday morning, so that would be where you’d find me I guess

  10. SillyWilly Says:

hey, neemor, good to see you!

hope your boss quits or moves to Thailand or becomes a priest.

  11. Robear Says:

any Big Red sightings in the Philly crowd?

  12. neemor Says:

    Silly, one can only hope.

I haven’t the foggiest idea how to navigate Philly let alone the airport, so we’ll have to work out some sort of a plan.

We’ll talk when I return from sunny FLA.

  13. garretc Says:

Maybe we can shanghai gavinsdad into giving directions?

“shanghai” being a massive overexaggeration of what we’d really be doing…

  14. neemor Says:

    We’ll figure it out.

Alright, gotta catch an early flight, good night all.

    Talk to you guys soon!

Lycan, we wish you were going, too.
