The Final Countdown

12.31.09 (W.Rogell)

Only four days remain until the curtain lifts on Summer 2010, opening up a season of great musical anticipation. Kicking off this Friday night, Phish will put last year in their rear view mirror and begin to forge the road ahead. With eighteen shows in June and eleven more in August, it is about to be open season for Phish jams. Winding their way from Chicago to the northeast and then taking a straight shot south, Phish will begin to blaze the trail of summer with a lengthy opening leg.

11.18.09 (M.Stein)

While the band’s best playing inevitably comes later in the tour, there is always something magical about the opening show.  Regardless of what the band plays, the first night of tour is always a special affair. A multi-layered personal reunion, reacquainting oneself with both friends and Phish, months of anticipation explode in cascades of adrenaline and excitement. That first note Trey hits sounds as sweet as candy in the warm summer air, and before turning one’s head, Phish has whisked everyone away into the first set of tour.

Always known for debuting new material at the beginning of tour, the band will likely add another layer of excitement over the first few nights with some brand new material. And if the improvisational progress shown in Miami is any indication, this summer should continue the fascinating re-evolutionary process of Phish. New adventures are now within arms reach.

Time is ticking like a bomb…

I am definitely on for Toyota Park, @aj!

Still hoping for no game 7, but if it happens, so be it. This will be my first tour opener evah, and I’ve certainly never been to a show where Trey’s team is playing in a game 7, in the same city, against the home crowd. Wow!

And FWIW, @BBPerm, Trey is a consumate professional. It’s tour opener, and it’s Chi-town, baby! It’ll be the shit!

Hartford tix should arrive today. Between lottery tix, live nation tickets, purchasing bundles for friends, purchasing tickets from strangers, and exchanging extra lottery tix I’ve had to create a spreadsheet just to keep it all straight. My goodness, why can’t it be easier than this.

The Hawks winning last night makes for interesting possibilities, all of which may have some affect on Phish Friday night. Who would have imagined that Stanley Cup action would affect Phish. Hawks win game 6 means no hockey/concert conflict but we will have a losing fan playing lead guitar in the city that beat his team. Flyers win game 6 and you have a convergence of the cosmos with said lead guitar player shredding in the city and at the same time as his team goes for the coveted Cup. Makes for an even more interesting tour opener than usual.

Either way an It’s Ice opener seem like a no brainer.

  3. GOOCHY Says:

    Hahaha good call, jdub.

  4. zzyzx Says:

I’m praying for a game 7 just for the weirdness that would ensue.

  5. Mr.Palmer Says:

Rock and Roll II opener in Toyota if Game 7 is a go.

  15. angryjoggerz Says:

So, these will be my first shows since I have been hanging on the BB. What is the protocol? Do we discuss the next day or do we not discuss so peeps can hear the show without spoilers? I hope it is handled like Lost.

yes, i look forward to opening my FedEx package and looking at all those shiny lawns that i’ll eventually sell at a major loss….one last hurrah with PTBM before i retire forever! amazing how i ended up scoring pavs for pretty much every show i need, way after the went onsale, via ticket re-release word of mouth.

congrats to those who did well in the lottery, sorry i’m bitter about PTBM!

  18. the_rizzle Says:

oh damn SG in the hizzy getcha oxys ready

  19. the_rizzle Says:

dude PTBM has been shafting me for yrs with crappy lawns no need to apologize to me

  20. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

@angry of course we discuss. we discuss before the show happens, while it’s happening and after it happens. you will see during the show multiple posts that read something like:

    bathtub gin!
    yes gin!

  21. Mr.Palmer Says:

angry- Miner usually has a review up the next day so discussion is certainly on. It usually is while show is going in real-time as well, ala Couch Tour. If your into no spoilers, you probably need to avoid BB.

  22. llamalee Says:

    @BTB, 7/3 is a tough ticket, i went and dropped $120 for a pit

    RE: 7/3

I’m looking at getting ORCH GA’s for $88 – I’ve exhausted other options. Hey, I’m traveling 1000 miles for these shows – I need to lock it in pretty soon.

  25. Willowed Says:

    Hey Boys,
I hope you’re having a great day. As I sit here I am thinking about all the memories that are about to be created in 2010. So I have looked back at the ones that were created for me in 2009. I want to comment on a few of the shows I saw. I hope that’s cool.

Fenway – The feeling of finally being at a Phish summer show was so powerful. I floated into that venue. I was not at Virginia so this was my first show in many years. Emotions spilling over. It was wonderful. Tweezer-Light mind blowing.

Jones Beach 3 – The rain…oh my god the rain. Twist Oye Como Va with a beautiful 2001>Slave. Dancing in the rain made me feel like a kid again!

Great Woods – I feel like every Great woods shows comes with a Makisupa and this one delivered. Not my favorite show of the ones I saw but the beautiful rays of the sun (after the monsoon the night before) made the vibe so special. The boys back at one of their signature sheds. Special!!

Hartford – The day I realized these are still the fun loving goofy nerds that I grew to love! Bring back the zaniness

Albany both nights – Golden Age…what the fuck is this? I don’t care but I like it. Give me more. The weekend the page was turned. This weekend was the turning point! Upward and onward after the Seven>Ghost – expectations were raised.

MSG – My favorite little run. The boys back in NYC. All is right in the world. Of course this run delivered my favorite show of the ones I saw in 2009. MSG 2 second set brought the funk. Free floating, super gooey funk. I dig the funk.

Sorry for the long post but I am starting to get excited.

Here’s to new memories created with you guys in 2010!!
    Sorry for the long post.
