The Final Countdown

12.31.09 (W.Rogell)

Only four days remain until the curtain lifts on Summer 2010, opening up a season of great musical anticipation. Kicking off this Friday night, Phish will put last year in their rear view mirror and begin to forge the road ahead. With eighteen shows in June and eleven more in August, it is about to be open season for Phish jams. Winding their way from Chicago to the northeast and then taking a straight shot south, Phish will begin to blaze the trail of summer with a lengthy opening leg.

11.18.09 (M.Stein)

While the band’s best playing inevitably comes later in the tour, there is always something magical about the opening show.  Regardless of what the band plays, the first night of tour is always a special affair. A multi-layered personal reunion, reacquainting oneself with both friends and Phish, months of anticipation explode in cascades of adrenaline and excitement. That first note Trey hits sounds as sweet as candy in the warm summer air, and before turning one’s head, Phish has whisked everyone away into the first set of tour.

Always known for debuting new material at the beginning of tour, the band will likely add another layer of excitement over the first few nights with some brand new material. And if the improvisational progress shown in Miami is any indication, this summer should continue the fascinating re-evolutionary process of Phish. New adventures are now within arms reach.

Time is ticking like a bomb…

    @silly
    sorry, left for a bit…
    you really don’t want to get me started on the ND to the Big Televen thing but you asked so here goes!

    I have always been a traditionalist in this regard, as I saw no need for joining a conference to happen for football. For other sports the conference affiliation has become essential for recruiting and everything else. I was there during the time they joined the Big East so I saw the before (as part of the now defunct Midwest Collegiate Conference which sucked royally) and after (which helped out so many of the sports in how they were able to improve everything from the quality of coaching to the quality of players and money was spent on sports that never had much of a budget previously). Joining the Big East gave a lot of the “olympic” sports a lift that they have definitely benefited from as evidenced by the recent trip to the Men’s Lax finals. when I was there you would have never thought the lax team could even make the tourney.

    If you look at the situation with all sports in mind, it makes sense for ND to align themselves with whatever conference gives them the best chance to keep the quality of both the men’s and women’s sports programs up to the level they are now (and hopefully even higher). Being in the Big East has been good but the lack of a strong footbell element is limiting. [aside: just noticed I misspelled football. I’m leaving it. apt.]

    The Big Integer is an interesting option though a lot of ND folk will not like this. I don’t really get that, as we have had claim to the Big Ten title in years past after beating almost half the league as part of our schedule. Overall, this is probably the most realist option if the huge realignments that people are talking about happen. I saw one today where the Pac-10 takes in the entire Big 12, forming a 22 team super league. I think that is absurd but several other theories do make sense in ways that require ND to join a conference for football.

    I still think that they can be successful and stay independent but the big issue is really how all of this proposed and conjectured realignment would impact their eligibility for BCS bowl games (and optimistically championship games). not that they are in a state to be playing in BCS bowls again yet but I am hopeful that Kelly can be the one to do it. For me, it has been a long, long time since I have had a recollection of ND Football that didn’t end in a way I don’t like.

    Unless a lot of the recent rumors are nothing more than idle talk, I think ND joins the Big Integer when the Pac-10 poaches a few schools from the Big 12 and the biggest chip to move around is either Texas or ND, depending on what your preference is. The crazy thing is that this is purely about money, which I haven’t even mentioned yet. I have already gone on waaaay too long here. we’ll save that part of it for another time.

    no matter what the end looks like it is kind of fun to keep track of…
