Weekend Nuggets: The 4th of July

Official Alpharetta Poster

Phish celebrated July 4th with to in Atlanta’s northern suburbs with the third patriotic weekend of their career. Finishing tour with four sets of energetic music, the band created an all-out party vibe for the tour finale. Within the two shows, improvisational highlights emerged in “Bathtub Gin,” “Antelope,” “Tweezer > Slave,” “Jibboo,” and “Piper > Ghost.” Finishing Independence Day with Rage Against the Machine’s ” Killing in the Name,” sandwiched within a comical, revisionist-history “Harpua” narrative,  Phish created their own pyrotechnics for the holiday.

    Right on, Robear.

I know it’s very late to be thinking about it, but I’d really like to go to a Greek or two (so would everyone). Have a few friends and fam in SF. A good SF bud just had a baby.

I am going to make it my mission to get out there. Throw down some $, ned style, and get it done. I feel the tingle just considering it. Are tickets impossible? What’s the secondary mrkt. rate? any leads BBers? how far is greek from SF proper?

  2. Robear Says:

    werd, phoam.

i knew that song from college, but when i read the lyrics the next morning, wow.

i tend to read lots of non-fiction Native and US history. Not good topics at parties, but it’s what I’m into.

when i’m not too baned to think, of course 😉

(end of ‘Saw It Again’, prelude to the ‘Walrus’ ending? )

  3. phoammhead Says:

Thanks for pointing that out, Robear, for the long term memory and my personal history of the July 4th show, it’ll be good to realize and remember that there’s a more meaningful aspect to the boyz throwdown, if you know what I mean – very cool – thanks!

  4. Robear Says:

kaya, if you make it, we’ve got you covered with style.

I can’t help with tickets, though. Asked my friends with connections, and they laughed. Apparently when Phish plays the Greek, everyone’s got a best friend, spouse or cousin that can’t get in.

Have friends from all levels and degrees of the scene that do not have tickets. In fact, I don’t know who has them all? If a bunch of easties skipped their home town (less than 6 hours) shows, just to come to the Greek? Give up your tickets now. You blew it. Seems most of my west coast friends are ticketless……

I’m pretty much cashing in my Waterwheel chips to hit Greek > Telly.

went from not really liking, to totally loving ‘Piper’, since return.

Nice thoughts on past, present, and future states @Kaya. I find myself attempting to do all the above at same time.

Right now taking in 6/22 set 2, working in the shop, thinking about these fake tour dates, and all in the present moment.

Mansfield’s second frame is the heat, Golgi as a breather keeps the energy moving after a killer start to the set. Just about every tune in that set has some real creative bits of jamming Sally is huge, shakedown street funk with the modern phish groove moving moving the pace along. Last couple minutes of Light are out there, and I like the transition into 46 days. While not perfect and rushed by Trey, the idea of laying down the crunchy intro to 46 days ontop
of the transendant groove they had going has a shot of the light/dark tension they experiment with. A Sublime build up
in Slave was a perfect way to cap that set.

    Enjoy the weekend BBers

the breathless freakout that the piper jam has become over the last 2 years is great. That song has come so far from the straight chord progression it was in euro 97

  7. Robear Says:

SFO > Berkeley = Planes, Trains, and Automobuses

can take the ‘BART’ and other public transit to get from A to B in the bay area, no problema’

  8. c0wfunk Says:

breathless freakout since proably euro 98 I guess but the new one is somehow different.

  9. Robear Says:

cOw, can’t walk away from the MPP ‘Piper’,

as the sun continues to rise over the field …….

  10. Mr.Palmer Says:

Hit the rewind button on 12/29/09. This Tweezer is still tops for 3.0. Not even close. MPP and Atlanta from ’10 follow her up.

Finally getting some rain here today. Feels like it’s been forever. We needed it badly. Phish and family today. Farmer’s market tomorrow.

Trying to revisit some peak ’09 moments for some comparison . Albany, RR, and Gorge. Maybe some Cincy highlights as well. Am i missing anything?

  11. Robear Says:

FOAM like descending scales by Treyzor around 8 min mark. This jam is so fluid and morpailicious

  12. c0wfunk Says:

still mired in my “the dead’s last show” spin from last night. Some really creative stuff going on in this space – in 1995 the 25 min drumz spaces are the highlight of the night for me. Really inspired at moments.

  13. kayatosh Says:

I may just splurge for expensive tix and plane fare and get in on the west coast fun. would be a first for me. seeing Phish on the west coast.

  14. Robear Says:

palmer, i was blown away by 7/31 II the other day on listen back.

don’t skip 12/4/09 either. Sashimi Grade Phish top to bottom.

  15. c0wfunk Says:

hm mr p I saw all 3 tweezers and I think in person I was most impressed with MPP, danced hardest to ATL and most in awe of the one in MIA. Not sure where that leaves us.

  16. Robear Says:

kaya, i can only promise you a great time, with world class treats, and quality cats from the BB. the rest is up to you 🙂

  17. c0wfunk Says:

big fan of knoxville as a sleeper choice. Or Charlottesville

  18. jdub Says:

    Give Hartford 09 a listen @P.

  19. Robear Says:

    said it before, bears repeating:

Mr. Piper from MPP, here’s your cake. Take it, eat it.

best i’ve heard since 7/9/03 Piper

has a morphing, edgy 2.0 sound to me. impressionistic tone, nowhere to be found.

  20. Robear Says:

proof they need more 15+ minute jams.

  21. kayatosh Says:

Maybe I try to go Fri and Sat. but if i’m flying out why not do all three?

  22. Mr.Palmer Says:

Robear- 7/31 is my favorite ’09 show. Very fluid.

12/4/09 gets a lot of attention. That one blew me away. Sheer Phish power in that building. Can’t wait till this year’s MSG throwdown.

Cow- it leaves us with three great tweezer’s to play with. More the merrier!

  23. Mr.Palmer Says:

My buddy just bought T-ride tickets from a scalper. He was picking them up today i think. Not sure how he working that out. I’m sure he dropped a nice dime or two. Money isn’t really an issue for him though.

  24. kayatosh Says:

Thanks, robear. I have no doubt. what a fun confluence of energy that would be.

you only live once. it does me ditching my fam. for a few days. that’s the hardest part and the $ is a factor. but you gotta do things to keep the fire burnin. it’s worth it i think. not the same on playback.

  25. jdub Says:

I recently went back to the Gorge, still near the top. Not sure if any 10 peaks beat Sally, Light, and RnR. Maybe #Line from Blossom or Camden Challdust.
