Miner’s Picks: Summer 2010 – Leg I

6.27.2010 - Merriweather (Graham Lucas)

After several weeks of listening and analysis in the Phisht Thoughts sound labs, the time has come to unveil the latest installment of “Miner’s Picks” for the first leg of summer tour. Because first sets and second sets contained such divergent vibes over the month, I’ve split the picks into a highlight-reel setlist, containing Set I, Set II, and an Encore. Though it was hard at times, I limited myself to one version of each song, so there are no repeats throughout this seven-plus hour compilation. With only a week and a half to go before The Greek kicks off Leg Two, here’s an audio retrospective of Phish’s first month of 2010. Enjoy the selections!

The road/highways splitting represents the splitting of reality between Peter/Fred.

I never did figure out Rene’s bit in that movie. Was she really in the porn biz with Laurrent’ in those photos? That one got a little fuzzy last time I watched it, need to re-visit that one.

damn, it’s almost a gig… oh boy, there’s a lot of good stuff here though.

Been trying to think if there is a good “entry level” Phish show (could be any year, though prefer a recent show for context) that would showcase some of that nice stellar jamming but all around good selection and energy. Not something too bluesy… but more jazzy. (I suppose this could cover a lot of ground without a lot of guidelines). I’m just wondering if there is that one “particular” night that speaks well to the “noob”.

    Any thoughts?

“The road/highways splitting represents the splitting of reality between Peter/Fred. ”

Great symbolism. Always liked the title, “Lost Highway” as it spoke (to me) of those higher planes of reality seldom visited these days… almost like we had lost that part of ourselves or connection to those “ancient ways”. Nothing to do with the movie, but thought I would drop this in about now.

  4. BrandonKayda Says:

Hmmm…let me sit on that one for a bit – I was thinking a show from maybe summer 93 would be good – tight composition, morphing, changing jams all over August 93′. Check Miner’s Picks for that to find some good stuff.

I’m trying to think of a more recent show…

  5. BrandonKayda Says:

That’s interesting @Void, honestly. I mean the idea of reaching a higher plane of consciousness through meditation is very enlightening to me – it really astounds me sometimes just how much wisdom and knowledge there is out there waiting to be found. It is just so exciting to me that I can learn so much from philosophy to science or w/e. Unbelievable.

“Lost Highway” in relation to the road traveled toward higher consciousness is a very good metaphor. I like that a lot.

  6. voidboy Says:

How about that show from (July?) 04 that you (& Miner) liked. I think it was pretty recent with some great jams.

  7. BrandonKayda Says:

The show you are thinking of is 6/19/04 – and I don’t know if I would recommend that to a noob to Phish. Yes, the jams are deep and exploratory, very deep in fact, but the compositions were sloppy as all get out in that era and I don’t know if that’s the best introduction. The second set of that show is golden if you’re a big jam hunter though. It’s all up to the person i suppose.

  8. voidboy Says:

I’m always interested in ancient mythology… especially as to how it relates to esoteric knowledge. Fun stuff.

  9. BrandonKayda Says:

It does sound pretty interesting @Void. I’ve never really looked too deep into it, but it is certainly eye-opening stuff from what I’ve seen.

  10. voidboy Says:

    “but the compositions were sloppy”

Yeah, sometimes I worry about that… but oh, the goo. Love that stuff sometimes. Yeah, an earlier show might be better for that level of jamming. Wondering if Lemon Wheel might not be bad. I like a little later then 93… but just before they went CowFunk. Actually thought that some of there latest stuff could be good as they have seemingly refocused on tightening up the “loose ends” of their jamming.

  11. BrandonKayda Says:

The MPP Gin is better than the nTelos Gin – Sorry Miner, but your opinion is just plain wrong 😉

  12. voidboy Says:

    love it.

  13. BrandonKayda Says:

    RR Stash
    Shoreline Disease
    Gorge Rock and Roll
    Albany Seven Below
    Miami Tweezer
    Toyota Ghost
    Toyota Reba
    Blossom #Line
    Camden Chalkdust
    MPP Piper
    MPP Gin
    Finger Lakes Weekapaug
    Raliegh Light
    Raliegh Jibboo

All examples of fantastic jamming in 3.0

  14. voidboy Says:

I just threw on “Mikes”… (no idea where you’re at in the list…)

  15. voidboy Says:

    Destiny unbound, I’d figure..

  16. BrandonKayda Says:

    1:15 on 6/12 Mikes

  17. voidboy Says:

    ok, i’m there

  18. BrandonKayda Says:

Damn this Mike’s gets dirty huh?

  19. BrandonKayda Says:

    Just hit 5:00

  20. voidboy Says:

I have really dug how Mike has come way up… (or how Trey has let him in). Yeah, this is nice…

  21. voidboy Says:

    5:30 about now.

  22. voidboy Says:

Maybe I should give my friend the Leg 1 Best… (though replace that Gin…). I better just check out those Gins myself to be sure… ;). Ooh, this is getting sweet.

  23. voidboy Says:

I always hear “Maze” at the back of Mike’s Groove…

  24. BrandonKayda Says:

Yeah the best of leg I 2010 Miner’s Picks oughta do your buddy good. There is some great stuff on here, most of it I 100% agree with. I think I’d swap a few tunes here and there…but solid overall. Great introduction me thinks

  25. BrandonKayda Says:

This Weekapaug gets seriously funky. I was playing along to it on piano today. Fun stuff
