Ten Tunes For Friday

6.27.10 (G.Lucas)

Today, in a one-time appearance between tours, Ten Tunes For Friday focuses on past highlights from all the Leg II venues. Spanning eras and playing styles, the history of these venues dip into a wide spectrum of Phish history. And here’s a small taste.

Reba” 8.9.97 I

This dreamy, daytime “Reba” contributed to a big first set at Alpine ’97.

Stash” 8.28.93 I

Pollock '93

This first-set highlight from The Greek showcased Phish’s torrid jamming of Summer ’93, defined by near-subconscious communication.

Run Like An Antelope” 8.12.96 I

Deer Creek and “Antelope” have become two peas in a pod over Phish’s career, with more than a few standout versions played in the cornfields. The band threw down this dizzying jam in the first set of the first show in 1996, setting the tone for a memorable weekend.

Fee > David Bowie” 10.28.91 I

This combination closed the first set at Elk Ballroom, Phish’s last visit to Telluride. And yes, Phish could play then too.

Harry Hood” 8.10.97 I

A uniquely gorgeous “Harry Hood,” this version carried a somber tone as Phish played the usually-blissful jam in a minor key to close the first set at Deer Creek.

Harpua” 10.28.91 II

A classic version of “Harpua” with comical narration from another era of Phish, nineteen years ago. This selection goes out to zzyzx!

Tweezer > Gumbo” 6.28.95 II

Strap on your seat belt for a wild ride through a quintessentialย  piece of Summer ’95 improv. “Tweezer” passes through countless themes, including ‘Dave’s Energy Guide” and a jam of The Breeder’s “Cannonball,” on the way to a half-hour epic at Jones Beach.

You Enjoy Myself” 8.28.93 II

The final piece to Summer ’93, featuring a prominent “Oye Como Va” jam.

Cool, a Ten Tunes for Friday! ๐Ÿ˜€ It’s been awhile since we’ve seen these.

Going to check out that Reba after this Ornette Coleman is finished

  2. BrandonKayda Says:

    Is anybody up?

  3. BrandonKayda Says:

This Jam->Help On The Way to open 2000.04.13 Phil and Friends is awesome, opening jam is about 15mins, flows nicely.

I thought of a cool “homage” Phish could do towards GD during Telluride, seeing as its right around Jerry’s Death. They could play a tease or a line of a song in the middle of a jam (ex: “Scarlet Begonias” teases during the Cobo 46 Days jam 11.18.09) – I’m thinking a Light->Dark Star Jam->Waves would suffice ๐Ÿ˜€

Greek in less than a week!!!

  4. BrandonKayda Says:

This Slipknot jam from 2000.04.13 Phil and Friends has a Dark Star esque jam around the 10min mark – can’t believe this is 23mins long…

  5. BrandonKayda Says:

Ridiculous – full band peak blues jamming for a bit…and back into the deepness at 18:50

  6. BrandonKayda Says:

Great swing back into the Slipknot theme as they finish it up and segue into Cosmic Charlie!

23min Slipknot. Who knew? These Phil shows are hot

  7. BrandonKayda Says:

It’s 5am over here…maybe I should be getting some sleep?

I can sleep when this set is over ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. BrandonKayda Says:

Okay folks, 2000.04.13 Phil and Friends set I is complete. Dayum what a set!!!! Huge improvisation all around. New Potato Caboose (17mins)->Get Together (9mins)->Slipknot reprise was a fantastic way to close a 5 song first set. Bravo.

I guess I am off to bed now, at nearly 5:30 in the morning…maybe ๐Ÿ˜‰

Later folks! Take it easy and enjoy reading this mindless dribble tomorrow morning ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. zzyzx Says:

    “canโ€™t believe this is 23mins longโ€ฆ”

Why not? That version of the band put pointless space jams in songs like Althea. Of course Slipknot! would be long.

Speaking of Dead covers, it was just pointed out to me that Furthur’s WA show is on Yom Kippur. It starts before sunset so I don’t know if attending a concert towards the tail end of a 24 hour no food/no water fast is a good idea, and I definitely wouldn’t want to have to count on Marymoor’s concessions to break it…

  10. zzyzx Says:

    Fun with FedEx tracking:

Jul 30, 2010 3:19 AM Arrived at FedEx location OAKLAND, CA
Jul 29, 2010 9:41 PM Departed FedEx location OAKLAND, CA
Jul 29, 2010 9:33 PM Arrived at FedEx location OAKLAND, CA

So what did they do there? Put it on a truck and give it a tour of the Bay Area for a few hours?

  11. nonoyolker Says:

Damn, Greek looks like it’s going to be a throw down… I’d definitely check out the DJ Logic set. Hope you all have a great time in the Bay area!

Shout out to Butter, my birthday brother in crime. Hope you have a great one pal! Put the feet up and enjoy the day. Me and the mrs are headed up the coast for some much needed R&R. Have a good one buddy

  12. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    mornin’ all

thanks for the bounty of streamable tunes this week, miner. the ten pack to cap it all off is like buttah.

regarding this Harpua, I have always loved the “local flavor” Trey adds to the story, talking about schralping, yuppies, and other mountain town things. too bad he didn’t go full out and say Harpua was schralping the gnar…

and how would we react today to a second set like this:

Set 2: The Divided Sky, Wilson > Dinner and a Movie > Stash, Paul and Silas, Bathtub Gin, You Enjoy Myself, The Squirming Coil, Harpua, Hold Your Head Up > Whipping Post> Hold Your Head Up, Highway to Hell
    Encore: Horn, Rocky Top

especially with fishman tooling away on a fretless guitar during whipping post. different times to be sure, but… that said, I love that show. classic phishiness abounds replete with the energetic jamming of youthful phish. AA, YMMV…

  13. tela'smuff Says:

listening to some Dead last night and I had visions of a Telluride second set starting like this:

    New Speedway Boogie>Telluride Jam>Light

“spend a little time on the mountain! spend a little time on the hill.”

  14. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I know you are probably not on the conscious side of sleep right now but I’m really glad you finally have tickets in the mail. I was stressing out for you and I’m 3,000 miles away and not even going to those shows. I’m sure the moment that package shows up you will breathe a deep breath of breathy relief.

  15. phoammhead Says:

Wow – just listened to that Harpua – love it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. zzyzx Says:

Type3 – actually I just woke up a little while ago so I’m wide awake…

  17. phoammhead Says:

Had a dream last night about getting gravel for a rode, getting but not getting a haircut, a street festival, misplacing or losing the car I was driving, getting lost in the streets and confines of the festival – a maze, some bad bad newz – i’ll take the Maze – count it 1st night at The Greek – Maze! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  18. El Duderino Says:

In Oct. ’00 I did the after show party on the boat in the bay… Great times great experience.

  19. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

oh, well, just scratch out that first sentence then. glad you have tickets on the way. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. Jtran Says:

Reba is just what I need this morning. Have my third and final interview this morning for a job I’d really, really like to get. Let’s do this!

  21. tela'smuff Says:

that Harpua is a blast. thanks for the reminder of how fun Harpua could be. I like the stories that were focused on Harpua and Poster a bit more. The last 3 haven’t done much for me in that department. The song has become an excuse to play a cover song. this makes me long for a classic battle between the dog and cat we all love.

  22. El Duderino Says:

The GD ’93 Deer Creek Run was released last night by C. Miller on WT and LL.

Should be up sometime today on bt.etree.

Super clean master sbd dats @ 48kHz

  23. zzyzx Says:

Tela – I thought the Atlanta Harpua was surprisingly focused on the classic story, much more than any version in years and years…

  24. Jtran Says:

Love getting your FB updates every morning. Thanks!

  25. tela'smuff Says:

zzyzx – really? because it seemed to focus more on Jimmy and his grumpy Grandpa or whatever. It seemed the Harpua v. Poster fight was thrown in as an afterthought. Apparently i need to go back and listen to it.
