Creme de la Creme

8.9.10 (W.Rogell)

Due to family obligations I was unable to attend what sounds to be, hands down, the best show of 2010, if not the entire modern era. All I needed was one listen with headphones and closed eyes to know that. “Disease > What’s The Use” is a seminal piece of modern psychedelia and, in my opinion, leap-frogged over of anything from The Greek to hold the trophy for the greatest jam of the year. A segue for the ages created a single piece of music that flowed like few musical sequences we’ve heard thus far. Throughout the entire show, Phish nary flubbed a note while crushing an unrelenting setlist of dreams. Not to mention that Trey had one of his finest nights of since Phish’s return, providing scintillating work from the “Tube” opener, through the end of the show. First set highlights included a sublime “Reba” which ended in “Fuck Your Face,” a combination that must have had Alpine going bezerker. But through the headphones, the most impressive first set jam was the redonkulous “Antelope” that punctuated the first set. Wanna’ hear some shredding? Well, cue this one up; arguably the finest outing of the era for the song as well.

A furious “Mike’s Groove” with an even better “Sneakin’ Sally” in the middle? Forget about it. I’m not sure how much I can go on here. The entire show flowed effortlessly as Phish jammed all the way through a legendary second set. I had an undeniable instinct when I boarded a plane in Indy that I was flying away from the shows of the summer in Alpine, and lo and behold, one night later…Phish exploded. Shit, even “Bug” absolutely slayed. I hope everyone had a blast. I’m sure you did.

That’s why you don’t miss shows.

I: Tube, The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > Suzy Greenberg, Funky Bitch, Reba, Fuck Your Face, Alaska, Back on the Train, Taste , When the Circus Comes, Lawn Boy, Sparkle, Gumbo, Run Like an Antelope

II: The Sloth, Down With Disease > What’s the Use? > Scent of a Mule, Mike’s Song > Dirt, Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley, Weekapaug Groove, Bug

E: Quinn the Eskimo

Damn. Just listened to Alaska. Trey absolutely destroyed it. GBOTT is ridiculously tight. Just 5 seconds of listening shows that this band turned the hose on last night and completely drenched the crowd. Amazing stuff.

DL’ing now. Fired up for Blast OFF. PGA Championship Sunday and arguably the best Phish of 3.0. This will require Bloody Mary and top shelf bane.
    I am pleased…

Those are big words coming from you @Col, you seem to have a pretty fair assessment of where Phish has been musically.

syncing with phone and will be listening in my shop this morning shortly. So excited to dive into this.

Couldn’t wait to spin the DWD > WTU. Raging…

Love the concept of having Fuck Your Face immediately following a blissful Reba jam. Talk about light/dark. Hilarious

You don’t even know, folks! Best show I’ve seen in terms of quality of jams! Not to mention, the meet up with Silly, Cal, and Dr. P was a great time, and we STILL have another night. I don’t even care what they play tonight! Everyone in the band was on fire. Page was the master of set one. Even Alaska slayed last night! I think I’m going to have to have a leg transplant if I even want to TRY to dance this evening!

  14. Monsterpus Says:

I hope they keep it up through Jones Beach. Two more days!

Post fail. HUGE night, hot in the trench, hose on high, show of the summer? Some amazing playing, both sets slayed. listen deep. Did not pull off the meetip, couldn’t find anyone. Fish side tonight? Lowest part, some good flat over there to work it out.

  18. Kevin Says:

Don’t sweat it, Miner. I’ve skipped epic shows for lesser reasons, and though it stings like shit at first, the next amazing show you see will make you forget all about it.

last night ‘s was one of the few shows that Trey’s new vision of the more old school song based shorter jammed sets really, really worked

played em tight enough to keep you attention. at times the sloppy play has made the more song based shows harder to take. last night everything was pretty on point. Taste was rough at times as usual these days and they had some issues through the Mike’s verses but very tight otherwise.

song selection was unique enough and with enough bursts and extended sections of improv to carry the set. Reba, Alaska, BOTT, Antelope, Suzy, and Bitch all had jammed interludes to keep keep everyone’s attention. had the fuck your face for the bust out kids. everyone is happy.

the 2nd set is key. If Trey can kick down that one real slick drawn out jam with a real smoothe segue into the landing song every night you can keep us jam kids happy. need some meat early in the 2nd. Shit was sick.

The shorter jammed segments in the 2nd thrived on energy and tightness. just slayed it. set didn’t trail off like many of 3.0. even up to the last notes of Bug Trey’s guitar work, Mike’s creativity, and Fish’s thundering drums didn’t let up. def a case of not what you play but how you play it.

my point is. with a little more set creativity. effort and creativity to the shorter type I jams. and the addition of one centerpiece jam every night. this new style and sound of Phish could have the potential to really take off.

work in progress and last night things got a lot clearer IMO.

    have a great day y’all
