"Fee" - 8.12.10 (M. Stein)

After a sloppy opening frame, Phish came back with one of their more creatively constructed sets of tour. “Drowned” brought the band into a new-school rhythmic-ambient jam, while they connected  “Jibboo > Gin” with a seamless segue. Trey left the whale behind on this second set “Bathtub Gin” using his Ocedoc to carve melodies into the summer night. After a quality mid-set interlude, Phish capped the evening by deconstructing “Split” into “Dog-Faced Boy,” and an impressive “Hood” which passes through an unorthodox segment of darkness on  the way to the top. All-in-all, this show is flying under the radar due to larger explosions at The Greek and Alpine Valley.

I: Runaway Jim, Punch You In the Eye, Roggae, Cars Trucks Buses, Sample in a Jar, NICU, Horn, Sugar Shack, Wolfman’s Brother, Time Turns Elastic

II: Drowned > Gotta Jibboo > Bathtub Gin, My Friend, My Friend, Buffalo Bill, Twist, The Horse > Silent in the Morning , Split Open and Melt > Dog Faced Boy, Harry Hood > Golgi Apparatus

E: Fee* > NO2* > Kung* > Fire

simple was brought to the mix last fall in philly (11.24)

^theres your date and location. 😉

  2. lastwaltzer Says:

Blossom’s Groove was definitely a turning point for Mike’s in 3.0, solid set closer. If I remember correctly the hood was also good compared to the ’09 ones. And of course you’ve got the #line.

  3. Robear Says:

    Time for a mental adjustment:

    12/29/98 II and some bane.

  4. gavinsdad Says:

‘preciate cha mitch (loved the philly 09 simple…underrated shows)

  5. Skyballs Saxscraper Says:

Mitch, you’re right, I was thinking on 2010 terms alone I guess. I tried to convince my brain to look it up on phish.net, but the brain said no.

  6. Mr.Palmer Says:

Great 2001 there @ Robear. It’s a beast. Crosseyed teases and all.

Divided Sky encore was like a cherry on top that evening.

  7. Mitch Says:

of the fall shows, i play 11.24.09 more than any other from that tour. a lot of it had to do with a great setlist but also it was my first of tour so all the songs were fresh. i liked cities better in philly cause when i saw it at msg, i had just seen it in philly type of thing.

  8. Leo Weaver Says:

“Divided Sky encore was like a cherry on top that evening.”

  10. gavinsdad Says:

i need a revisits of 12/29/98…caught 2 of those 4….that one was hot but i remember the boogie more than the 2001 and where i was that nite….all the way across from the stage…not my usual zone in MSG…hot looking show…completely forgot div sky encore.

  11. butter Says:

what up GD, just plannin this AC trip, and boy, its a haul to get there from the west coast!

  12. gavinsdad Says:

sup butter…i guess i woulda thought that there was direct SFO or OAK to PHL (than it’s only an hour and change rental car or taxi drive from the PHL airport). guess not….

  13. Robear Says:

    re: 12/29/98 MSG,

was headed out to vend b4 encore.

    ‘divided sky’ comes on,

robear runs back down steps, shoes back off, engage dancing feet.

this ‘2001’ is just what the dr. ordered. *ting fest. sickness

don’t snooze on the dirty ‘Free’ or the shred-peaked ‘LxL’ in the set.

  14. butter Says:

yea, but for the same coin i can catch a connector and fly all the way into AC

anyway you cut it, it’s a full travel day

i am leaving on the 28th

  15. butter Says:

    not trying to whine

Denver is just lookin easier and easier by the moment

    2hr southewest flight……forget about it

  16. Robear Says:

butter, no other way to slice it. full day of travel before and after run, when going west to east. red eyes stink, especially on the way to the shows. yer behind the 8 ball the whole time. 3 day run = 5 day trip, and so on. enjoy! I know I would.

  17. butter Says:

Robear – i caught wind of yesterday’s notice

bullshit………i’m sure you’ll take lemons and turn em into lemonade

    stay strong

  18. butter Says:

the 6 am outta there is lookin sweet….

i figure after 4 nights in AC, after a few hours of post parties and good byes , we’ll be fully ready to bounce……

  19. makisupaMan Says:

The second set at the Creek opener clocked in at just under 2 hours. This Drowned jam is severely underrated and deserves close consideration as some of the best ambient work done by this band in the modern era. Here is a somewhat shaky video I took during it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBI4XK6U0G4 Looking forward to hearing Miner’s thoughts on Alpine, as it was simply legendary work done there.

  20. Robear Says:

done that. it works perfectly for the return flight.

  21. gavinsdad Says:

word @ Mitch. i was so knocked out by the Cities > Camel Walk, The Curtain With, The Wedge, The Moma Dance, Reba section of the set

look at that…i’m sorry but peeps slept on the above….the Reba wasn’t top 10 but it was pretty as a picture. just a nice phishy chunk of music there.

  22. Phamily Berzerker Says:

72% and counting of island tour on its way

    wasabe peas 😉

  23. lastwaltzer Says:

    @Butter, robear

Apparently you two need to get on that anatomical particle realignment transportation (APRT). Should take your travel time down to a few minutes. Although we can’t promise you’ll return with your limbs in their original placements.

  24. voopa Says:

Actually, 7/17/98 II Gorge 2001 > Mike’s > Week > Zero is 65 minutes. 2001 is a 24 minute funk party where CK5 straight up stole the show. He did during Mike’s too. Unfortunately, audio recordings don’t capture it, and if you weren’t there, it probably won’t be as thrilling upon listening.

Total Set II + E (PYITE, Rocky Top): 78 min.

Set I is just under 70 minutes. Highlights are Makisupa opener, the first Gumbo I know of with the big bass bombs during the a capella chorus, and Divided Sky during sunset.
