Ten Tunes For Friday
It’s Friday; and with a little time in between tours, the situation called for another installment of “Ten Tunes.” This week, new and old Phish jams are juxtaposed side by side in playlist that spans over a decade. Enjoy the weekend – but first, enjoy the selections below.
***
“Wolfman’s > Piper” 10.30.09 II – With all the focus on Indio falling on the Exile and acoustic sets, this jam from the night before Halloween continues to fly under the radar. With a trip to the other side in “Wolfman’s” and an “I Just Wanna’ See His Face” jam in “Piper,” this segment is a true ’09 highlight.

“Tweezer > Theme” 6.18.10 Hartford II – This groove-laced “Tweezer” from Hartford during Summer’s first leg still gets plenty of play in my current rotation.

“Yamar” 7.25.98 I – While much of the focus falls on the second set from this Austin show, Phish took “Yamar” for a ride in the first half.

“Timber” 6.24.10 I – Musical density at its finest – 2010 style.

“Reba” 8.14.96 II – Before Hersheypark Stadium had a revamped sound system and rubberized dance floors, Phish still raged Chocolate City. In the band’s one stop between Deer Creek and The Clifford Ball, Phish played a wildly underrated show at Hershey that featured this gorgeous, first set “Reba.”

“Antelope” 11.8.98 II – This dynamic “Antelope” punctuated a spirited Saturday night of rock and roll at UIC ’98.

“Slave” 8.7.10 II – Capping this summer’s Greek run in style, this “Slave” concludes Friday’s Ten Tunes with similar majesty.

I said it yeasterday but I’ll say it again. Mike’s new song Can’t Stand Still is catchy as hell. I also can’t stand still while it’s on.
That Alpine ’99 Fluffhead may be Phish’s best “jam” segment ever IMHO
“and the story was true about a dose? ”
no, that was cover story. the details don’t matter though. it should be a one time thing.
the bobby clamdiggers are a real piece of work especially with the Ancient Mariner facial hair
warren never did much for me outside a couple tunes his tone is suited for e.g. St. Stephen, Passenger but that’s just a style preference, not a value judgment
re. 7-24-99 fluff.
they revisist some of the fluff jam vibe later in the set II tweezer.
What about when Warren would sing the Jerry ballads?
Come A Time comes to this mind
so if you saw a guy and a girl sitting down staring at eachother for the entire set (it would have been to your right) that was me and my lady
that just sealed it. kangfirmed: willowed and I shared space at The Ball. I had a head full of fun going on myself, but I definitely know I saw you two sitting there. I seem to recall thinking “how the fuck can they just be sitting there during this?!?”
His versions of Smokestack and GMLSG were stellar
re: Kang at Phish shows
Back in ’96, I’m pretty sure Kang slung some kind to my buddies at Hampton in the lot. Seriously. No way to kangfirm, though.
The Band seemed ripped at that Alpine show
especially Trey
both sets seemed real short. The very creative Fluffhead and Tweezer jams
tons of slop in all the compositions
and then the massive encore
def one of the stranger Phish shows I’ve ever caught
not possible
Kang puffs schwag
I was so high on like 5 007′s
Didn’t notice the slop too much that night except for the Glide until I heard the tapes
that’ll do it
those things were crank city
jaw must have been rattlin
“when the Dead played Egypt Bill chartered a jet and took all of his extended circle including the broke-ass ones, styled everyone out the whole way
now that is a classy fucking move right there”
^here, here
@Dude, that “Jam” segment is one definitely worth the title. I haven’t listened to the Tweezer in a while, might need to check it out for the thematic jamming noted by Kaya.
I gotta read back but how did T3 and Willowed put that together?
Still possible. As 16 yr olds, def got custy’d hard.
am I the only person getting Suzy instead of slave in today’s TGIF?
re. clifford ball
8-16-96, day 1, set 1 — on my back for 90% of that set. got a little too too on scotch doobies and brownies, pre show after the long drive. enjoyed the set, but could not pick my body up off the ground. it was like my body took a time out (held down by the cleveland browns), while my mind danced around the airforce base to a phish soundtrack. I remember thinking during Esther, “I’m digging this aural bliss right now, but I can’t move.”
Bad Ireland rumors all over today
may need to go to the IMF
Ireland Credit Default Swaps have been blowing out lately
hope Europe isn’t about to get dicey again. Just worked through the Greece fears.

Kangfirmed!
Needless to say the jaw was working overtime that night
my summary of today looks like this:
various: hey, those grateful dead guys were good huh
willowed: i was next to alexi lallas at the ball
t3: that was me
aw: fuck kang
i could really use a nice slave to pick my afternoon up, and have nothing on my new laptop.
agree with the positive comments on the 7.24.99 fluff and 7.8.99 fee jams – i remember the birds from 7.8 kicking ass too (another underrated 99 performance)
miss birds, though i know some say kdf has taken it’s place – i think there is plenty of room for both
wish the loops that used to signal the arrival of the ghost would come back too – i love how on the DC jibboo (or was it the greek?) – you can hear people go nuts with the delay loop action – makes people happy!
@aw – I don’t think the problems in Greece are over by a longshot. The spreads on the Greek bonds vs. Bundesbonds are at or near all-time highs. With Japan taking efforts to depress their currency, the dollar should strengthen, which will hurt American exporters.
