A Day Off

The Gorge '09 (Graham Lucas)

With another project in full-swing, I might have a few days off over the next couple weeks. Whether music or a video, however, there will always be something on the site worth checking out each and every day.

Jam of the Day:

Tweezer” 11.11.96 II

Fast-forwarding one week from yesterday’s Gainesville “Tweezer,” here is groove fiesta from Grand Rapids, Michigan. In only eight days, one can hear a significant progression from the Perazzo-assisted rhythms to intentional and slowed-down  Phish funk. Parts of this jam sound like they could be plucked from a 1997 show as the band’s new direction progressed each night of November ’96.

Tenax - 2.21.1997

Winter ’97 in Europe was the final step in discovering the pocket that Phish would explore for the next few years. This show in Florence came ten days before the band’s breakthrough in Hamburg, Germany on March 1, chronicled on Slip Stitch, and Pass. This second set featured dynamic and unfinished versions of “Antelope” and “Reba,” while the first half consisted of only six songs.

I: My Soul, Foam, Down with Disease, The Lizards, Crosseyed and Painless, You Enjoy Myself*

II: Ya Mar, Run Like an Antelope** > Wilson > The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > AC/DC Bag,  Billy Breathes, Reba** > Waste, Prince Caspian

E: Character Zero

*During the “Wash Uffize Drive Me to Firenze” section of YEM, Fish exclaimed “This is a dream come true!”

** unfinished

  1. The Light Between Says:

Just listened to those Fall 96 Mike’s and Tweezer this morning. I was shocked (not in a bad way) by how much they resembled the Halloween Simple in so many spots, which is one of my favorite and most listened to jams.
Two thoughts: 1. I love Trey on the kit, or more so, Page leading the charge. I saw two shows that fall, and while I don’t remember much drum kit in Seattle (probably on Free, but don’t remember), I remember a sick YEM in Portland, with Trey on the kit, and a start/stop jam that made me think they were robots.
    2. It made me think of how often jams on tour followed a similar theme, when they were touring so often, and made me wonder if there is more pressure on them these days, when they know everyone that wants to can hear every show instantly, vs back then, when most of us couldn’t hear every show, and had to often wait months to hear what we could.

  2. The Light Between Says:

Incidentally, those shows were 11/24 and 11/27, for those trying to keep the chronology straight. More fall 96 please, Miner. I love this era and haven’t heard too much. I would love to hear how it all fits together.

Man I thought blades of steel was revolutionary for some reason when it came out never played it tons but remember vividly a surge of excitement every time I had theability to play it. I think I thought he graphics were some big leap forward ; especially the zoom in fight scenes

    mornin’ all

I was at the JOTD Grand Rapids show, riding rail in front of Page with my sister and a couple of her friends. I had a total locked-in moment with Page during Bag in the first set (I’m sure he remembers it fondly). Fun show. Funky Tweezer.

  5. Jtran Says:

    Miner, new project, interesting.

  6. Eriic Says:

“Selling the druggie culture to the naive pampered baby boomers paid very well. Too bad living on drugs was no kind of life.”

  13. b-rock Says:

I saw that too T3… Crazy that people would feel the need to do that, I guess it makes them feel good but not doubt it will come back around.

  14. b-rock Says:

Is Mike wearing plus fours, capris, or just really long shorts with his tube socks and high tops?

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

all of the above answers would count as a correct answer. we would have also accepted
    “rolled up black jeans”
    “pegged pants”
    and several other valid responses.

gotta say, the Lady Gaga speech from yesterday is a lot more well thought out than I expected it to be. the large number of people holding up their smartphones to record it was hilarious though. looked like a phish show.

  16. BTB Says:

Lady Gaga = Madonna 20 years ago

That’s all I have to say about that

  17. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Back in the days when I was a teenager
Before I had status and before I had a pager
You could find the Abstract listening to hip hop
My pops used to say, it reminded him of be-bop
I said, well daddy don’t you know that things go in cycles
The way that Bobby Brown is just ampin like Michael

    all things return…

  18. Mitch Says:

  24. El Duderino Says:

    I wonder who’s selling it?

    That bitch Deborah Cuntz ????

If it’s her’s and she’s selling it. I hope it burns down to the ground.

  25. SillyWilly Says:

When Lady Gaga says she’s avant garde it makes me want to punch myself, because this can’t be the reality I am living in.
