Type II Trivia Test

10.30.98 - Indio, CA (Wendy Rogell)

Today we have a game show on Phish Thoughts – the place where the fun never ends. Phish’s jamming has often been described in layman’s terms as ‘type I’ ( contained jamming that adheres to song structures and chord progressions) and ‘type II’ (open jamming that leaves any semblance of the song it came from). Today’s game centers on Phish’s open jamming. Below are ten audio clips – each a few minutes long, and here is the task. You can gain 3 points per audio clip – 1 for identifying the year, 1 for identifying the song, and 1 for identifying the date – for a total of 30 possible points. The winner will win their choice of a “TAB and the Tabernacle” CD or Mike Gordon’s “Moss,” to be delivered in the near future. Please email your entries with ten numbered lines, one for each guess. All entries must be emailed to mrminer@phishthoughts.com by 7 pm pacific on Friday (tomorrow) night. If multiple entries nail a perfect score, the earlier entry will take the prize. Without further ado, here are the audio clips. Good Luck!

Great idea miner. Will attempt these later this evening.

    Have a good day all.

  3. willowed Says:

This is great nice work Miner!

  4. c0wfunk Says:

cool idea. Tricky stuff in there at first listen. Hope to have time to dig in later.

  5. Mr.Palmer Says:

After sampling the 1st 4, while dressing and feeding 3 kids, i realize i have no shot. I could maybe get one so far.

I predict T3 wins it…then requests the new Pork Tornando instead.

  6. GMan Says:

Awesome Mr. M. Great idea. Too hard for me though. I feel newbish.

  7. st8 of mind Says:

Tweezer week is awesome. Wish we could do a whole month. Thanks Miner!

  8. Jtran Says:

Awesome post Miner, if only to discover some new jams I didn’t know about before (because I won’t win)

  9. Rivertrance Says:

Long time lurker but just started posting last night. In the past all the SCI hate posted here has kept me from getting more involved but the recent positive defense of Kang by Cowfunk has given me the push to step over. I’m working on a mix of some of Kangs best playing to prove he is actually an amazing and original player. Love the site Miner and keep up the good work.

  10. jdub Says:

Great idea Miner. I have a feeling I’ll be guessing years based on style.

  11. kenny powers Says:

I’ve heard very little SCI ever, but I am confused about the whole anti-Kang thing. I guess people knock him for being a Trey wannabe, but isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

Plus, how similar could he sound playing mandolin in an unabashed bluegrass-flavored band, whereas Trey only dabbles in bluegrass and is more of a loud rock guitarist? Am I missing something? Is he a prick in real life or something?

    anyway.

  12. kenny powers Says:

Same with some of the WSP hate I hear. Is it that some folks want to prove that they’re not stereotypical jam band fans (and by extension that Phish is too unique/awesome to lump in with anyone else) by saying they hate a couple of the biggest ones?

  13. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    mornin’ all

palmer, you give me too much credit. I’m actually really not good at this type of identification. meaningless protocol, pointless trivia, misleading statisitics, and internet tomfoolery are more my bag. I may not be able to tell you which jam it is, but I know when I like ’em!

  14. Lycanthropist Says:

    @KP

SCI and WSP are too generic for my tastes..
Not trying to front as a non-jamband guy, I’m just not.

I play in a jam band and love the two kings of jamband music.. but beyond that I haven’t found another “jamband” other than Phish and the Dead that really grabs my attention

I find Cheese and particularly WSP boring.

  15. Lycanthropist Says:

Yeh I thought I could at least pinpoint the years on these jams, but I am grasping at straws on some of these.

  16. c0wfunk Says:

Rivertrance I’m trying to decide if you’re for real or an AW ghost back to haunt me…

Guess I’ve become cynical but I’ll assume you’re legit 😉

To answer your question from last night I’ll be at the 10/30 show in Hampton

@kenny – Kang does use a sustained wail a lot like Trey does and peaks out songs in a similar way, quite often. I’ve also heard him bust out C&P or 3rd rock licks, a la Trey (not Trey’s riffs tho….) Seems to me he endeavors to *not* sound like Trey, almost self consciously sometimes, especially in SCI’s later years.

Some of his songwriting has similar features, but most of it is pretty different. I couldn’t hear Trey writing a tune like Desert Dawn for one example.

Also his use of the fiddle and acoustic mandolin set him apart. Jean Luc Ponty tunes like Rhum n Zouc and Mouna Bowa are a mainstay of SCI’s. Another piece of SCI that is emphasized is latin jazz. People sometimes get confused and think phish invented latin jazz when they wrote landlady 😉 But that riff that both Kyle and Page use is a pretty universal latin jazzism.

I’m guessing most around here dont’ want to have another SCI day so I’ll try to say little else. We’ll see how that goes.

  17. c0wfunk Says:

^^3rd stone from the sun that is as in jimi hendrix. (see deer creek 97 cities — is that right?)

  18. Mitch Says:

Miner, you’ve outdone yourself. Well done dude!

Rivertrance, first off, welcome. Secondly, end your post with “*ducks to avoid shit storm”

  19. Mitch Says:

And I’ve said before I’ve had fun at sci shows before. It’s just fun to make fun of kang, that’s all. Dont let the kang hatred run you off. We all share a love of Phish at least.

  20. Lycanthropist Says:

    cowfunk and rivertrance –

fear not, there has to be more of you SCI lovers amongst us… they just being quiet about it.

definitely shark infested waters when it comes to that band here.

Kang, Trey rip-off or not, just doesn’t connect with me at all.

I was in to SCI for about a year back in 2002ish, and that mainly had to do with Kyle. He has some serious chops and he was entertaining to watch as a keyboard player. But I found myself bored after a while, once I figured out their jamming formula…

Anyway, I don’t really want to start another SCI hate fest either.

    —————-

And I have got to find out where clip 5 came from, whatever jam that came from sounds amazing

  21. Mitch Says:

    *haters (iPhone auto-correct’d)

  22. Lycanthropist Says:

definitely not gonna win this contest

  23. Lycanthropist Says:

hopin Miner puts the full songs for each of these clips up as the TTFF tomorrow

  24. Lycanthropist Says:

well i guess he wont be, since we have til tomorrow night

  25. Lycanthropist Says:

I think I now have Type II blue balls.

    Thanks a lot Miner
