Type II Trivia Test

10.30.98 - Indio, CA (Wendy Rogell)

Today we have a game show on Phish Thoughts – the place where the fun never ends. Phish’s jamming has often been described in layman’s terms as ‘type I’ ( contained jamming that adheres to song structures and chord progressions) and ‘type II’ (open jamming that leaves any semblance of the song it came from). Today’s game centers on Phish’s open jamming. Below are ten audio clips – each a few minutes long, and here is the task. You can gain 3 points per audio clip – 1 for identifying the year, 1 for identifying the song, and 1 for identifying the date – for a total of 30 possible points. The winner will win their choice of a “TAB and the Tabernacle” CD or Mike Gordon’s “Moss,” to be delivered in the near future. Please email your entries with ten numbered lines, one for each guess. All entries must be emailed to mrminer@phishthoughts.com by 7 pm pacific on Friday (tomorrow) night. If multiple entries nail a perfect score, the earlier entry will take the prize. Without further ado, here are the audio clips. Good Luck!

wasn’t there a fall ’97 competition last year? I believe the winner won tickets to Fenway. Is there a download of that mix anywhere, I’ve looked in the past to no avail.

  2. kenny powers Says:

    @ Lycan

totally valid, i find them pretty boring too – what I meant was the more malevolent harshness people throw at them. I guess it could feel good or be fun to bash once in a while, but I mean…

  3. kenny powers Says:

oop, sorry gang – didn’t know this topic was exhausted yesterday, i’ve been a little MIA from the BB lately…

    ::subject change imminent::

  4. jdub Says:

I didn’t want to come off unwelcoming but I was wondering if Rivertance was a wiseguys alter ego. If not welcome, and take Mitch’s advice and duck.

My son is a big Johnny Cash fan. This morning he asked if he could go see him live when I go see Phish. After telling him he no longer is alive he said but dad when we play his cds he is still alive. So true, and why we cherish the recordings of Garcia and others.

  5. Rivertrance Says:

Definitely don’t want to hijack the convo to SCI with these great Phish jams on the plate for the day. Just excited to finally be posting and with all the SCI talk recently thought I’d get it out of the way and express I am a huge fan of both bands. Thanks for being so friendly. Can’t wait for fall tour to begin. Have a great day.

  6. Lycanthropist Says:

well its very easy to bash mediocrity

    (sorry cow)

  7. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

it really is a lot harder than I thought it would be to identify some of these jams.

what’s with the clapping in #6?

    @kp
did you ever get in touch with that UM taper regarding your remastery? curious how that turned out…

  8. Lycanthropist Says:

    😉

  9. c0wfunk Says:

@kp check back on Tuesday midday for the SCI / Disco Biscuits cage match

  10. Lycanthropist Says:

ok taking my hater shoes off.

sorry you guys caught me early in the morning without my filter on,

Rivertrance – please accept my sincere welcomes to this board. Believe it or not, we are a generally positive place. Welcome aboard.

  11. bhizzle Says:

    I just like saying “kangfirm’d”….

Miner, do songs repeat? of course not dates, but titles?

    What up y’all!

  12. jdub Says:

Like I thought with these jams, I think I stand a chance guessing years but beyond that…. I think I have heard the first one.

  13. c0wfunk Says:

the anger and harsh sentiment I never really get either. Back in the day when the WSP scene started selling those tractor running over a hula hooper stickers, I was a little bemused and confused. I am not a WSP fan at all and their fans in general drive me nuts, but why would i go out of my way to worry about them, as they seem to do me? How does me liking something different demean what they like? This is what I do not get about it. In real life all of this is just ridiculous because some of my closest friends are WSP perps and some of them hate SCI and none of that matters when we’re chillin together. Nobody’s getting runover by any tractors or anything at least.

  14. c0wfunk Says:

    re: jam quiz

I was quite surprised at being unable to identify even the song on most of these jams. Nice job of picking some really out there stuff.

  15. jdub Says:

This form of communication is difficult when it comes to touchy subjects.

  16. Selector J Says:

Reggae’s a happening on the radio show if anyone’s feeling like skanking…

    Great looking post today, Miner.
Can’t wait to check out these type ii’s!

  17. guitarpicker420! Says:

@Type 3 – number 6 is the only one I am reasonably confident in.

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @gp
yeah, the clapping actually helps in that regard.

    #7
is so familiar I can taste it. but I can’t quite name it… yet.

  19. guitarpicker420! Says:

    lots of fun though.

Re- sci, I’ve got buddies who swore by them, but I was always meh.
WSP – too loud and not enough clarity of the instruments, love Bell’s voice and I love their keys

I guess the only “jam” bands I listen to are the Dead and Phish, although I will go some distance to see MMW. I think that most jam bands are kind of noodle fests with jams that don’t go anywhere and poor songwriting taboot. Tacking a 15 minute funk jam on to the end of a sucky song, just makes a sucky song go on for a lot longer than it should.

  20. lastwaltzer Says:

“My son is a big Johnny Cash fan. This morning he asked if he could go see him live when I go see Phish. After telling him he no longer is alive he said but dad when we play his cds he is still alive. So true, and why we cherish the recordings of Garcia and others.”JDUB

Can we focus on this, rather then the SCI talk?

That is simply beautiful. I’ve been having a shitty morning and that definitely threw a smile back on my face.

  21. jdub Says:

I’m on #7 as well T3, the song jumped out at me. Or so I believe, and I think I got a general year. Will be attempting to confirm on Phishows later.

  22. bhizzle Says:

Would the Allman Bros be considered jam band? Mule?

MMW! I have to get that Radolarians box set STAT!

  23. jdub Says:

It touched my heart LW, it is so fun witnessing my son pick up the nuances of life.

  24. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    that’s awesome, jdub.

  25. guitarpicker420! Says:

I bought all the Radiolarians as they came out, so I haven’t bought the box. I have just been waiting for them to come back to the midwest.
