Type II Trivia Test

10.30.98 - Indio, CA (Wendy Rogell)

Today we have a game show on Phish Thoughts – the place where the fun never ends. Phish’s jamming has often been described in layman’s terms as ‘type I’ ( contained jamming that adheres to song structures and chord progressions) and ‘type II’ (open jamming that leaves any semblance of the song it came from). Today’s game centers on Phish’s open jamming. Below are ten audio clips – each a few minutes long, and here is the task. You can gain 3 points per audio clip – 1 for identifying the year, 1 for identifying the song, and 1 for identifying the date – for a total of 30 possible points. The winner will win their choice of a “TAB and the Tabernacle” CD or Mike Gordon’s “Moss,” to be delivered in the near future. Please email your entries with ten numbered lines, one for each guess. All entries must be emailed to mrminer@phishthoughts.com by 7 pm pacific on Friday (tomorrow) night. If multiple entries nail a perfect score, the earlier entry will take the prize. Without further ado, here are the audio clips. Good Luck!

    well, 75 + fees

  2. phoammhead Says:

If I am going to NY City run with my girlfriend, does it make sense to only put in for 2 tix to each nite – does that make my chances at getting better seats greater when you only put in for 2 instead of 4?

  3. guitarpicker420! Says:

NYE in NYC sounds great, but the gf and myself will be kicking it way oldskool in Nola with some funky jamz.

  4. phoammhead Says:

I think with Halloween already sold out, the marketing efforts don’t call for having to hype it up like last year at Indio.

  5. Mr.Miner Says:

i mean, I don’t know what would make it “worth it” to you.

Infected Sucks now fwiw….so assuming we can see Hallucinogen (presumably playing after IM) I would say yes. But $87 is different for everyone..

  6. Mr.Miner Says:

thats crazy expensive for a trance party…well, they have now made it into a trance “concert” so they can charge that for NYE since its at the Hammerstein and they have IM. Yes, it will sell out.

  7. garretc Says:

    @Miner

Gotcha. Is it likely to sell out on Friday or do you think tickets will be available closer to the date?

  8. jdub Says:

Good point Phoamhead. Let’s just hope Trey doesn’t get all nostalgic and push for Born to Run. On the other hand, if it is wrapped in 2 sets of top grade 3.1 then no harm I suppose.

  9. phoammhead Says:

    @jdub

Yeah, I’m hoping for no Born to Run – give us something that at least rocks! I’ll take Zep over Bruce anyday. I kind of hope it’s something completely unpredictable.

  10. garretc Says:

I think I fall into the “not another classic rock cover” camp…

    Surprise us, Phish!

  11. Mr.Palmer Says:

It will be good whether its MJ, Zep, Radiohead, or Eno. It really doesn’t matter. They will shred it.

  12. phoammhead Says:

    ^

Agreed MrP – it will be amazing!

  13. sumodie Says:

    NYE Hallucinogen

As Miner mentioned last night, Hammerstein is not a dance club, so yes, Infected Mushroom, etc., will likely be over at 5am

And if Phish NYE is over at 1am, then there’s walking, crowds of crazy peeps everywhere, & then the madness of gaining entry into a NYC late night venue during peak hours, and on NYE

So one might catch only ~2 hours of Infected Mushroom….maybe…at least something to ponder

  14. Mr.Palmer Says:

“Nughuffer”- best song name ever… llfa

  15. ThePigSong Says:

Just when everyone has given up….BAM! Thriller!

    that’s my call at least

  16. kayatosh Says:

    greetings, evening folks.

read/skimmed the board today. probably also need to hit up these mystery jams. cool idea.

Symbol of Reality by roots reggae greats the Gladiators has been in my disc playa in the car, and i can’t get it out. the title track is ingrained in my brain. seek out that album.

  17. kayatosh Says:

    Off the Wall

  18. ThePigSong Says:

I’ve been on these interwebz more today that all month combined, and I’m sure I still forgot to accomplish a handful of my electronic responsibilities…doh

  19. sumodie Says:

If I am going to NY City run with my girlfriend, does it make sense to only put in for 2 tix to each nite โ€“ does that make my chances at getting better seats greater when you only put in for 2 instead of 4?

I always ponder this one -ultimately I’d say one’s chances decrease slightly, as I think it hinges mostly on being awarded a higher lottery number and much less so on the actual number of tix requested for any one show

    but I really don’t know

  20. Foul_Domain Says:

    Evening BB.

    Missed the trivia today…

But just found out from the wife that I got my Utica tix finally

Zep III for Halloween would be tasty.

  21. Mr.Palmer Says:

Do they break orders up? If you put in for 2, can you get just 1? If you put in for 4, can you get 1,2, or 3? I’ve never had this happen or heard it happen to anyone i know. I usually put in for 2. Thats just me though..

  22. kayatosh Says:

the one thread from today that jumped out at me was re. the DC football team’s offensive name. how is that racism allowed? what about that awful caricature? shameful. rename the team the washington bullets, anything would be better than a slur.

  23. sumodie Says:

I think with Halloween already sold out, the marketing efforts donโ€™t call for having to hype it up like last year at Indio.

Last year’s marketing machine was due to Indio being a festival with potentially huge numbers (that didn’t materialize)

This year it’s back to the same ole ordinary Halloween Phish show ๐Ÿ˜‰

  24. sumodie Says:

@mrP: I’d say if you were picked dead last in lottery for a particular show and you wanted 2 tix and there was only 1, that’s what you’d get

so it would only happen rarely
