Type II Trivia Test

10.30.98 - Indio, CA (Wendy Rogell)

Today we have a game show on Phish Thoughts – the place where the fun never ends. Phish’s jamming has often been described in layman’s terms as ‘type I’ ( contained jamming that adheres to song structures and chord progressions) and ‘type II’ (open jamming that leaves any semblance of the song it came from). Today’s game centers on Phish’s open jamming. Below are ten audio clips – each a few minutes long, and here is the task. You can gain 3 points per audio clip – 1 for identifying the year, 1 for identifying the song, and 1 for identifying the date – for a total of 30 possible points. The winner will win their choice of a “TAB and the Tabernacle” CD or Mike Gordon’s “Moss,” to be delivered in the near future. Please email your entries with ten numbered lines, one for each guess. All entries must be emailed to mrminer@phishthoughts.com by 7 pm pacific on Friday (tomorrow) night. If multiple entries nail a perfect score, the earlier entry will take the prize. Without further ado, here are the audio clips. Good Luck!

@mrP: thanks for the GD re-post. Saw eldude’s comment earlier and forgot about it

    “Surprise us, Phish!”

I’ve said this before but this album gets my vote for the surprise factor and pure left field awesomeness:
Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires.
Not only is it a loosely themed around Halloween but it is a certified badass dub album. In my top 3, easy.

Do a heavy ‘cowdub’ jam, take it type II and see what galaxy they lead to. They would probably have to recruit Scientist (or someone) to guest on the boards but I’m sure he’s available for the right price. He could rehearse with them the 27-28th some afternoon practices the 29th-30th and be ready to face melt by the 31st.

I mean look at this cover…
How do you NOT play that on Halloween?

(Obvious answer: When you’re a rock band.)

    Da me Bowie.

  5. Luther T. Justice Says:

Over on Deems, they have a Hershey matrix done w/cool edit pro 2.0 by someone calling themselves phishjam10.

The audience source is: AKG C460Bs/CK 63-ULS (DINa, OTS, LOC, on stand – 10″) > Kind Kables > Naint LittleBox > Segue Dogstar Silver-Clad Interconnect –

Have you heard anything about this or are you familiar w/an aud source w/the above? I like a matrix done right, but if its not it can be annoying.

  6. jdub Says:

Anyone think they got Miner’s jams figured out? Oldskool wins I bet.

  7. kayatosh Says:

    what up, luther?

not familiar w/ deems or that matrix. i do have a decent aud. of hershey, 6-13-2010, can’t remember off hand which one i went with. what a night!

  8. Selector J Says:

    re: Gladiators
Haven’t checked that one out myself, kaya. Looks like a good one based on its lineup.
    re: Redskins
Definitely in poor taste. I must admit I do feel better about supporting the team after reading about that poll, though.

  9. Mr.Miner Says:

We’ve got someone with a legit but beatable score…

  10. Luther T. Justice Says:

I’m so glad I made the last minute decision to go to Hershey. I’ve kept a few of those songs in my listening rotation. Just a chill dance party w/the most room to get down I’ve had at a Phish show ever.

I’m gonna grab this matrix I think. If its a good one I’ll send it your way as a memento of a sweet night in the land of chocolate.

Fringe is such a great show

  12. angryjoggerz Says:

Anyone else see this on facebook?

    “Phish ‎1.1.11”

Do we know what it means?

  13. angryjoggerz Says:

skip that, we know what it means. sorry, late.

  14. jdub Says:

Selector, phish could pull off a dub cover. And it would be the unpredictable type thing I hope they do. A bit cliched but DJ logic could provide the services they would need as well.

I read (I believe in The Phish Book) that during one of their first euro tours they had purchased a bunch of techno CDs and got off on them. Perhaps they were a stimulant for the late nighties ambient/psychedilia style they used often. A DJ sit in to compliment their album of choice would work very well for a costume me thinks.

  15. Mr.Palmer Says:

AJ- i thought in China you were a day ahead, not 3 behind? 🙂

    Evening BB

Couldn’t post today, decided to look busy at work all day b/c I was on a different computer then normal. I didn’t even find out about NYE until after 5, ahhH!!

Pretty excited about the next couple months. I think I have a new plan re: Halloween tickets. Put in for 1 to each MSG night in the lottery, hope I score, assuming I do probably give up on AC unless something comes up for face between now and then.

If I don’t score continue to look for tickets for 10/31 and NY run, and decide based on what seems more affordable.

Phish > Posford > Phish is pretty hard to pass up though.

Oh yea, also just got the Droid. Pretty cool little phone.

  18. angryjoggerz Says:

am i really that far behind? has it been days? yikes.

  19. Mr.Palmer Says:

Logic is friends with the Panic boys. Would probably break too many phans spirits. How dare they?

  20. ThePigSong Says:

buenos noches BB – good to hang here for a day

  21. jdub Says:

So last night I had a harvest moon sky that turned into a house shaking thunderstorm. And tonight I get a near full moon with Jupitor chilling mighty close to earth and a fractal pattern cloud formation rolling through. I love Autumn skies.

  22. Jtran Says:

Any stories around here yet of people finding 10/31s at or near face?

  23. angryjoggerz Says:

JDub – Happy Moon Festival to you (one day late). You should be enjoying a moon cake with that view.

  24. Mr.Palmer Says:

Our very own Silly Willy told me about this Cog program. Thing is sweet. Plays flacs or any files for that matter. Just drag and drop. No conversion necessary. Plus songs are labeled and in order. I highly recommend it.

    Thanks Silly!!!
