Type II Trivia Test

10.30.98 - Indio, CA (Wendy Rogell)

Today we have a game show on Phish Thoughts – the place where the fun never ends. Phish’s jamming has often been described in layman’s terms as ‘type I’ ( contained jamming that adheres to song structures and chord progressions) and ‘type II’ (open jamming that leaves any semblance of the song it came from). Today’s game centers on Phish’s open jamming. Below are ten audio clips – each a few minutes long, and here is the task. You can gain 3 points per audio clip – 1 for identifying the year, 1 for identifying the song, and 1 for identifying the date – for a total of 30 possible points. The winner will win their choice of a “TAB and the Tabernacle” CD or Mike Gordon’s “Moss,” to be delivered in the near future. Please email your entries with ten numbered lines, one for each guess. All entries must be emailed to mrminer@phishthoughts.com by 7 pm pacific on Friday (tomorrow) night. If multiple entries nail a perfect score, the earlier entry will take the prize. Without further ado, here are the audio clips. Good Luck!

Logic is friends with many. One of my favorite musical sets of all time was MMW with Logic and Scofield at Berkfest. Right in front of the soundboard with happy tripers all around.

  2. angryjoggerz Says:

Wasnt logic like the first acceptable DJ for the jamband scene? He is really a pioneer in jamtronica (punches self in face).

  3. sumodie Says:

Looks like a record 51,454 Burners were on the playa this year

See link below for an insanely detailed satellite overhead of Black Rock City

  4. sumodie Says:

@jdub: that’s the one & only Berkfest I caught -what a smokin show!

  5. Mr.Palmer Says:

Jdub- i was just being a wise ass. In a snarky mood. I’ve seen Logic a few times with both Panic and galactic, back in the day.

  6. guitarpicker420! Says:

I don’t know why there isn’t more love for Born To Run, however, if they are going to do a Bruce album, they should do Darkness On The Edge Of Town. That album is flat excellent. There’s room for lots of experimentation and jamming on a tune like Adam Raised A Cain. I think it could work really well. Conversely, they’ve done Beatles, done Who, done Stones, done Floyd, maybe dip into the Cream catalog?

  7. jdub Says:

@Jtran, prepare yourself for instant stimulation overload. These small devices that hold an infinitismal amount of info and entertainment should have a disclaimer with purchase. Enjoy.

@AJ, I hope your trip is going well. How is tomorrow treating you?

  8. Mr.Palmer Says:

Dammit! Just went to the den and asked my wife if she wanted to do bong hits. Of course i didn’t see my 5 year old sitting next to her because i was standing behind the couch. I thought she was sleeping. Oops.

  9. Selector J Says:

Word, jdub. Glad I got at least one other person drinking the Vampire Kool Aid. I truly think it would be one of the coolest choices. (Yea, I’m biased.) Very spacious grooves throughout that whole album… would just be a complete dance party.
Now that I think about it, even if they didn’t get a dubbist like Scientist, there’s no reason that they couldn’t faux dub it like Dub Trio does. Modern technology makes that pretty doable.
And besides, I don’t know if just any old DJ could actually pull off the dubbing. Scientist and his ilk are manipulating the sound via the mixing board alone. It’s a very difficult thing to do well on the fly and there really aren’t a lot of people that do ‘live dub’ in the classic sense. (There never really were.)

  10. Jtran Says:

    Palmer

Your wife does bong hits? Cool.

  11. Selector J Says:

@aj Reading back.. Got 2 drinking the Vampire Kool Aid!

  12. Jtran Says:

    does as in takes

  13. KWL Says:

damn… just settling in for type ii trivia…… i have heard #1 many times before, but can’t quite place it yet

this is going to be fun–thanks miner!

can the prize be an extra halloween ticket? no? well, i’ll still play.

  14. Selector J Says:

bummer, Palmer. Do you have a set of bongos?

  15. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    LLFA @ Palmer.

At least you didn’t have the t00b in your hand, right?

  16. Mr.Palmer Says:

Disco Biscuits in NYC 12/27-12/29. Terminal 5. NYC is going to be an even bigger circus this holiday season than normal. Embarrassment of riches, musically…

  17. Mr.Palmer Says:

No tube in hand. Do that stuff in the garage only…. its cool. She just shook her head at us, then told us we should start using a Vape….

  18. willowed Says:

If I took a bong hit now at my age…my head would explode

Then I would start to panic

  19. Jtran Says:

    @Palmer

“us” – I hope you’re with John, I can see him loving bong rips

  20. KWL Says:

wow this shit is hard. well done miner, well done.

  21. voopa Says:

    Love DJ Logic.

Back when they were recording the Sharin’ in the Groove album (will upload if people want, but it is a Mockingbird benefit, so you really should buy it), Logic had a poll on his site asking which Ph tune he should cover. I think I was the only one to pick SOAM because he actually emailed a reply!

  22. DukeOfLizards Says:

    Evening, night crew.

Question for folks as anal-retentive about their music library as me (do these people exist?): “Grateful Dead” or “The Grateful Dead”? What is the preferred nomenclature, dude?

  23. sumodie Says:

thus far Type II Trivia is smokin me, 3 to zip

    this ain’t my specialty

i’ll go put my dunce cap on now 🙁

  24. sumodie Says:

    No ‘The’

  25. Jtran Says:

    @Duke

I’m pretty sure it’s Grateful dead, but I’m no expert.
