Mud Island

Taking this week’s “Jam of the Day” theme right through “Weekend Nuggets,” this installment is all about ‘Tweezers.” This Memphis show from Summer ’95 contains the “Mud Island Tweezer,” one of the most extended and iconic explorations of the song in their career. At a time when the band continued pushing boundaries of jam-length and abstraction, this “Tweezer” clocked in at over 50 minutes, but when listening, boredom never comes into play. One of the most famous versions taboot, if you haven’t heard this, clear an hour of your time, sit back, and relax. Phish dropped one for the record books on the banks of the Mississippi.

I: Don’t You Wanna Go, Gumbo, NICU, Mound, Cavern, Possum, All Things Reconsidered, Amazing Grace*, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Spock’s Brain, Split Open and Melt

II: 2001 > Poor Heart, Tweezer > Acoustic Army, While My Guitar Gently Weeps

E: Simple, Rocky Top, Tweezer Reprise

Type II Trivia Results: With little competition on day 2, “Rippin'” Ross Bellenoit ran away with this contest with a remarkable 26 out of 30 points! Identifying every track and only missing a couple specific dates – what I thought was most impressive is that he only missed one year out of ten. By blowing away the competition, Ross wins his choice of CD: Trey’s TAB at the Tabernacle or Mike’s Moss. Kudos, Ross! Jeff D. put in a  a noble effort, nailing half the selections, while Brad P. rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. The entire results  and answers are below. (If your name is not listed, it is because you scored no points. Better luck next time.) Thanks for playing!

  1. Ross B. – 26 pts
  2. Jeff D. – 15
  3. Brad P. – 11
  4. Ethan W. – 8

Well I’ll be hog tied. Most of those jams came from songs other than I thought. Time to go back to Phish University!

  2. voopa Says:

Bookmark 9/23 so you can play those for the naysayers!

  3. voopa Says:

    And so to bed.

  4. Foul_Domain Says:

Cant wait to hear this 50 min Tweezer!

    Morning BB!

  5. Foul_Domain Says:

Im only 15 min into this monster, and the boys have already covered a lot of ground. This jam is a thing of beauty so far! Very “Santana-ish” sounding around the 13 min mark…Kind of like the ‘Black Magic Woman’ rhythm (though unintentional, no doubt).

    Madness at 16 min now…

    back to business.

  6. Foul_Domain Says:

INSANELY good change back to the Tweezer groove at 19:30.

  7. Foul_Domain Says:

31:00 in now. Pure beauty. This is some of the greatest full-band jamming I have ever heard. Period.

  8. Foul_Domain Says:

What a treat! This is a must-hear for sure. There is absolutely no fluff in the entire 50 mins. The jam covers so much territory with precise blends and great communication by the whole band. This one is going to get a lot of relistens over the next few days.

    Thanks again, Miner!

  9. Jtran Says:

Can’t wait to get home from work this afternoon and spin this nice and loud, as well as my new 11/22/97 video

  10. Jtran Says:

FYI, Just saw that 6/15/10 Portsmouth is in the 2000 folder in the Audio Archive

  11. EL Duderino Says:

Ok I see the results from the trivia quiz…

    But who are they?

  12. BeantownBoy Says:

    Good Morning, BB-

Is anyone else watching the battle of the blues in the premier league (Chelsea vs. Manchester City)? If so, the JOTD serves as a nice soundtrack.

    Have a good saturday.

  13. BeantownBoy Says:

How did you like that game last night?
The boys from the Fens seem to have a little fight left in ’em.

This JOTD on the other hand is pure fire and must listen material.

  14. thelot Says:

i’ll never forget the view of the memphish skyline with a full moon overhead…beautiful!! what a way to kick off my 1st summer tour!

  15. P.S.H.S. Says:

Good morning all! What a beautiful fall day in New England! A long walk with the boys is in order, can’t decide on a show 6/25/10 or 8/14/10

  16. joe Says:

double the walk and do Both!

  17. BeantownBoy Says:

Do yourself a favor and take the few minutes to download the DOTW that 50 minute Tweezer should get your weekend off to a good start complimented by a strong coffee and da bane.

  18. P.S.H.S. Says:

Thanks for the suggestion, I like seeing the my fellow NE boys up this morning, you guys pumped for Worcester or what!? I’m more excited about those two than new years

  19. P.S.H.S. Says:

Green mountain coffee- check, orange kush- check, mj infused 2001- check. Time for a stroll, takes on new meaning when you’re actually pushing a stroller 🙂

  20. BeantownBoy Says:

    Halfway through this Tweezer.

    Mind beginning to melt.

  21. BeantownBoy Says:

Good call on the MJ 2001, I was just rocking that the other day in the car.
Definitely psyched for Woosta, but don’t overlook the Manchester sneaker show that people will be talkin’ bout through AC.

  22. joe Says:

the one I’m most excited for is Augusta. Can’t overstate how small the venue is in comparison to any place I’ve seen phish in the last 16 years. and the folliage is going to be great. My girlfriend’s sister lives up that way, and it’s always fun to hang with her husband who is a big fan as well. Bed to crash in 20 minutes from Venue too. (same for Manchester at my one real show going friend’s house in NH but that venue seems more “cookie cutter”). Also looking forward to Providence since that has some great memories. Worcester is too far out and at too cold a time of year for me to start thinking about. but, yes, I will be excited. Probably the place I’ve seen them the most ( I think pretty much every show since 1995 there)

  23. Undermind Says:

@ Joe – same here man! I have NEVER seen Phish at an all GA inside show either.

  24. BeantownBoy Says:

Yeah, Augusta is going to be an intimate one for sure and it sounds like for you it is going to be quite the fun time. Fall phish is definitely going to be an experience to behold and getting started in just 2 weeks.

  25. Undermind Says:

Those Red Rocks Tweezer vids are sick!!! gdoucette1978 has some other nice ones too. Thanks for the links Mr Miner!
