Mud Island

Taking this week’s “Jam of the Day” theme right through “Weekend Nuggets,” this installment is all about ‘Tweezers.” This Memphis show from Summer ’95 contains the “Mud Island Tweezer,” one of the most extended and iconic explorations of the song in their career. At a time when the band continued pushing boundaries of jam-length and abstraction, this “Tweezer” clocked in at over 50 minutes, but when listening, boredom never comes into play. One of the most famous versions taboot, if you haven’t heard this, clear an hour of your time, sit back, and relax. Phish dropped one for the record books on the banks of the Mississippi.

I: Don’t You Wanna Go, Gumbo, NICU, Mound, Cavern, Possum, All Things Reconsidered, Amazing Grace*, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Spock’s Brain, Split Open and Melt

II: 2001 > Poor Heart, Tweezer > Acoustic Army, While My Guitar Gently Weeps

E: Simple, Rocky Top, Tweezer Reprise

Type II Trivia Results: With little competition on day 2, “Rippin'” Ross Bellenoit ran away with this contest with a remarkable 26 out of 30 points! Identifying every track and only missing a couple specific dates – what I thought was most impressive is that he only missed one year out of ten. By blowing away the competition, Ross wins his choice of CD: Trey’s TAB at the Tabernacle or Mike’s Moss. Kudos, Ross! Jeff D. put in a  a noble effort, nailing half the selections, while Brad P. rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. The entire results  and answers are below. (If your name is not listed, it is because you scored no points. Better luck next time.) Thanks for playing!

  1. Ross B. – 26 pts
  2. Jeff D. – 15
  3. Brad P. – 11
  4. Ethan W. – 8
  5. Andrew B, Lex P – tied w/4
  6. Dave L, Ryan B, George – tied w/3
  7. Dagan S, Chris – tied w/2
  8. Matt P, Rick D – tied w/1

    I’m stuck watching the Bengals/Panthers game… 🙁

Only one early game this Sunday down here.

  2. Robear Says:

Matt Ryan plays the Saints today @ New Orleans. Does that chg. your rec?

Lots of folks hoping Dallas is due! Too many good games this morning. argh. Watch one, DVR one, miss too many. Plus yarden chores.

  3. Robear Says:

duder, i broke down last minute and got the nfl sunday ticket. just in time to watch the lions choke against the bears in real time. i could’ve had the ‘Joy’ box set with money to spare!!!!

  4. Mr.Palmer Says:

oh yeah, i was looking at wrong week. Flacco vs. Cleveland is still better matchup i think though.

  5. KWL Says:

telly 1 set 2 is a top set of 3.0 if they don’t abort the tweezer

    $.02

  6. Robear Says:

word, i’ll give him one more chance. he’s killing me so far.

  7. EL Duderino Says:

Cable only where we live… 🙁

  8. Mr.Palmer Says:

Going with your advice. Buckhalter it is. Good luck. Your QB situation is really a toss up. could go either way. Flacco is home as well. Ryan is in the Dome.

  9. Robear Says:

I agree, KWL. I really enjoyed it in person, though. In the back of my mind, I wondered if they were going to segue back into ‘Tweezer’ at some pt. Always ’bout what coulda’ been, shoulda’ been.

  10. Mr.Palmer Says:

put in my NYE run request today. It getting expensive, this band of ours…

  11. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Palmer

8 shows a year seems about the perfect number at this age for me.

  12. Robear Says:

Palmer, add cross-country airfare to the ticket price, and I have to start re-thinking my habits!

  13. KWL Says:

robear, what are your show plans–msg run? anything else?

  14. Mr.Palmer Says:

I can’t imagine that Robear. If i had to do that i wouldn’t get to many shows at all.

Dude- thats about my range the last 2 years. 7 in ’09, 9 or 10 in ’10.

  15. joe Says:

It is funny when you think of 8 shows a year being kind of a life compromise or a low number. Can’t complain on my end at all since 8 shows comes without the need for plane tickets or the need for hotels except for pure comfort instead of questionable driving decisions. Although, even did down and back to msg and portland last year, so that’s the range….sorry if that’s rubbing it in. got off on a tangent I guess.

If it makes you feel better Robear, I had to cancel my sunday ticket package because I’m working on Sundays till 4pm est.

  16. Robear Says:

my credit cards hate the new Phish touring schedule.

Joe, believe it or not, I often think of you whence pulling mid-day tubes. Seems like you’re always workin’.

KWL, looking slim to none. 🙁 Have to do some hard negotiating with the parents, kids, and ex. re: the NYE run. Fall is out of the question.

  17. joe Says:

nope, just complaining about it online while at work makes it seem like I do more hours than I actually do 🙂 It only comes to about 50 hours a week or so. But I’m just usually here at times when “normal” working people are home pulling tubes. I really have to stop bitching about it. At least it’s money in the pocket for more Phish!

  18. joe Says:

and it’s not so much of a job, so a large percentage of the hours can be spent bitching about it here. It’s rotting my brain and my self-esteem at the same time. Wish it was spent coming up with an idea that would help the world and support me enough to pay the bills (including phish tickets)

  19. Robear Says:

    correction:

At 17% interest, my credit cards LOVE Phish tour schedule. My pocketbook, not so much.

  20. Robear Says:

joe, we’ll hang this fall. you have a strong spirit, and your ‘bitching’ about work is pure comedy around these parts! i can fly out of Cali with meds now, legally 🙂

  21. joe Says:

I sense a big West Coast run in 2011.

  22. Robear Says:

i think i have a handle on the east / west disparity. I think Phish is trying to promote a sense of ‘We’ over ‘Me’. It’s a harder lesson than many realize.

  23. KWL Says:

the bills are winning! the bills are winning!!

:enjoying it for the 3 minutes it will last::

  24. joe Says:

is that of real time or game time KWL?

I was actually at the game the last time the Bills beat the Pats. Seems like a long, long time ago to me. Might have been the last time that Bills fans had any hope.

  25. halcyon Says:

    Happy Sunday.

Giants not looking good. Stupid mistake by manning, interception the other drive. Me thinks this will be a frustrating season.

Plane tickets to fly back east are expensive. Sunday is always the worst day to search for airfare, but prices are 100 more than I normally ever pay.
