Taking this week’s “Jam of the Day” theme right through “Weekend Nuggets,” this installment is all about ‘Tweezers.” This Memphis show from Summer ’95 contains the “Mud Island Tweezer,” one of the most extended and iconic explorations of the song in their career. At a time when the band continued pushing boundaries of jam-length and abstraction, this “Tweezer” clocked in at over 50 minutes, but when listening, boredom never comes into play. One of the most famous versions taboot, if you haven’t heard this, clear an hour of your time, sit back, and relax. Phish dropped one for the record books on the banks of the Mississippi.
I: Don’t You Wanna Go, Gumbo, NICU, Mound, Cavern, Possum, All Things Reconsidered, Amazing Grace*, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Spock’s Brain, Split Open and Melt
II: 2001 > Poor Heart, Tweezer > Acoustic Army, While My Guitar Gently Weeps
E: Simple, Rocky Top, Tweezer Reprise

Type II Trivia Results: With little competition on day 2, “Rippin'” Ross Bellenoit ran away with this contest with a remarkable 26 out of 30 points! Identifying every track and only missing a couple specific dates – what I thought was most impressive is that he only missed one year out of ten. By blowing away the competition, Ross wins his choice of CD: Trey’s TAB at the Tabernacle or Mike’s Moss. Kudos, Ross! Jeff D. put in a a noble effort, nailing half the selections, while Brad P. rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. The entire results and answers are below. (If your name is not listed, it is because you scored no points. Better luck next time.) Thanks for playing!
- Ross B. – 26 pts
- Jeff D. – 15
- Brad P. – 11
- Ethan W. – 8
- Andrew B, Lex P – tied w/4
- Dave L, Ryan B, George – tied w/3
- Dagan S, Chris – tied w/2
- Matt P, Rick D – tied w/1

@Summer98
^Good questions.
Word is > high demand for all 5 shows.
did anyone that posts on the BB get points?
Fri/Sat MSG shows, plus NYE & 1111 = uber high demand
Plenty of folks missed out on MIA NYE, I’d expect they’ll be making this run
What does anyone think about the demand for Worcester showz?
We northeasterners have such short term memories, we get suckered every time phish comes round
Jones Beach is so last year 8)
Thanks for the opinions. Gonna try to get 8 requests in. Worst case scenario I have some face and fees extras for the BB.
Take that back, worst case scenario is I go 0 for 8, but that’s not gonna happen!
^what Sumo said re: NYC nye demand
Plus: nice job @littlerollingthunder. You are the polar opposite of me…a dude that loves phish to the core but knows very little about their recorded output. That one reason I hang around this place.
I’m still going with just one entry and hoping karma catches up. Imight be needing some of those extras summer llfa
mitch, come to brooklyn! one day we’ll get a local drink.
dunno bout woosta shows…likely sellouts, but how fast?
im not taking any chances
Hope you all had a good weekend. Fall is here in New England, we took a nice drive to north east Mass and back for a wedding. Lots of color starting up.
NYE run is another gift to the New Englanders. MSG on the weekend and a Worcester run for Red Sox nation. I will enjoy this fall/winter Phamily reunion. You guys west of the Mississipi will get yours, don’t worry.
Worcester goes lightning, I’m not taking a chance either. Northern New England is very excited about these shows, and a lot of expats will plan visits home accordingly I bet.
” lot of expats will plan visits home accordingly I bet”
That’s me and wifey for sure. Already planned to be on the East Coast for the holidays, now we fly out of NYC back to the west rather than Burlington.
Listened to “Nightfall of Diamonds” GD release today. Giants Stadium ’89. Set II is a thing of beauty. Check it…
Watching the vermont governors debate now. VT politics are so funny
My Giants dropped a giant turd today. 13 penalties, 3 turnovers ( 2 inside the 5 yard line), and a safety (penalty in own end zone). Time to re-group. Positive is this team is capable of turning it around.
Jets/Dolphins will be fun tonight.
Palmer, you’ve been getting your Dead fix lately. Great to hear.
I went back to the great went this weekend. 8/16 set 2 and 3 and 8/17 set 2. Loved all three for different reasons. And then dived into 8/12/10 set 2 tonight. Love the patience from that Alpine set. Drowned jam could be in miner’s Type 2 quiz and fit right in.
The Dead is the gateway to Phish for me. Didn’t get into to them until freshman year of college. Without the introduction to them, the scene, and of course seeing the live shows, chances are i never would have gotten the Phish bug.
Every once in a while i gotta go back and show the respect. Plus, now its so easy to listen to something you’ve never heard before. It’s not like the old days where you would just play your maxell of 5/8/77 over and over again.
That being said, i’m listening to the Disco Biscuits now while hiding out down in my basement….waiting for the ensuing order to come upstairs and begin the ritual of putting 3 lunatics to bed.
@Palmer
Miner’s torrent shows?
yup.
Nice..really been liking those when I turn ’em on. Moss is spinning now, really making me wish I could catch a show this November.
I like it too Jtran. Only parts i don’t like is when they sing..llfa. I don’t see myself ever getting compulsive about them, but thats ok. I have enough habits, both musical and otherwise. Definitely have to be in a mood for them .
I like Moss a lot 1st spin though. Only Gordon album i have though. Nothing to compare it too. I like the new Neil Young album as well.
My thoughts exactly. Won’t get too into the Biscuits I’m sure, but would love to catch them if they’re near Burlington on a weekend 😉 , and I have no other Cactus albums either but I like this sound a lot.
