Mud Island

Taking this week’s “Jam of the Day” theme right through “Weekend Nuggets,” this installment is all about ‘Tweezers.” This Memphis show from Summer ’95 contains the “Mud Island Tweezer,” one of the most extended and iconic explorations of the song in their career. At a time when the band continued pushing boundaries of jam-length and abstraction, this “Tweezer” clocked in at over 50 minutes, but when listening, boredom never comes into play. One of the most famous versions taboot, if you haven’t heard this, clear an hour of your time, sit back, and relax. Phish dropped one for the record books on the banks of the Mississippi.

I: Don’t You Wanna Go, Gumbo, NICU, Mound, Cavern, Possum, All Things Reconsidered, Amazing Grace*, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Spock’s Brain, Split Open and Melt

II: 2001 > Poor Heart, Tweezer > Acoustic Army, While My Guitar Gently Weeps

E: Simple, Rocky Top, Tweezer Reprise

Type II Trivia Results: With little competition on day 2, “Rippin'” Ross Bellenoit ran away with this contest with a remarkable 26 out of 30 points! Identifying every track and only missing a couple specific dates – what I thought was most impressive is that he only missed one year out of ten. By blowing away the competition, Ross wins his choice of CD: Trey’s TAB at the Tabernacle or Mike’s Moss. Kudos, Ross! Jeff D. put in a  a noble effort, nailing half the selections, while Brad P. rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. The entire results  and answers are below. (If your name is not listed, it is because you scored no points. Better luck next time.) Thanks for playing!

  1. Ross B. – 26 pts
  2. Jeff D. – 15
  3. Brad P. – 11
  4. Ethan W. – 8

  6. Dave L, Ryan B, George – tied w/3
  7. Dagan S, Chris – tied w/2

    Just completed the 50-minute Tweezer.
Haven’t heard that one in ages and it took me places and thoughts from a long time ago. Thanks for that, Miner.

Definitely take the time to listen.

  2. kayatosh Says:

morning, folks. startin the day off with coffee + and chick corea on a CD called change. You guys remember CD’s?

@PSHS: don’t know how you kush it up in the morning, but all the power to you. MJ infused 2001 was amazing live and still a treat on playback. he hits that thriller theme perfectly and the crowd eats it up.

  3. Rivertrance Says:

Good morning BB. I’m not a huge tweezer fan and tend to enjoy the later more groove based Phish but this 50 minute version is actually quite nice. I’m not as fimilar with old phish so it was great to hear. Gonna have to check out more 95 in the future. Have a great day.

  4. BingosBrother Says:

Top of the morning to you, my friends. Do any of the winners have handles or are they all lurkers?

wow, this whole Memphis show looks hot on paper. Spocks Brain! Love it. Acoustic Army seems like a perfect landing pad for a 50 minute Tweezer.

And thanks for the video of my favorite PHI3H Tweezer so far.

  5. buried alive sf Says:

hey miner – could you add the download links to the quiz?

  6. ThePigSong Says:

    first ticket request in!

  7. ThePigSong Says:

I’d say a large percentage of the Phish community reads this blog- but a VERY small percentage ever looks at the comments.

  8. Leo Weaver Says:

Morning folks, and Happy Weekend! Congrats to Ross and the other high-scorers. You guys all lurkers? I don’t recognize any of the real names.

Rolling through some of those Japan 2000 shows that voopa upped this week, it’s been a while. Headed down to the ATL this afternoon for a buddy’s bachelor party…gonna have to load up the Mud Island Tweezer to help pass the time. Should be a nice ride.

@kaya…what kind of ipod-like device do you use? As I recall, you have a small FLAC player, right? itunes is starting to annoy me.

  9. themanatee Says:

    not a huge tweezer fan?

  10. kayatosh Says:

seriously, themanatee. not a huge tweezer fan — does not compute.

    That cat needs more yoga.

  11. ThePigSong Says:

I postulated that Rivertrance is Robear the other day.

  12. Leo Weaver Says:

    and less hula.

  13. Leo Weaver Says:

I think you might be right pig…some other regular anyway

  14. Kevin Says:

I am so glad that I didn’t remember to send in my contest submission — man. My Phish ears have gone to shit since the breakup.

  15. BingosBrother Says:

    “not a huge tweezer fan?”

  16. kayatosh Says:

I have a 10/29/2010 in hand. and the excitement jumped off the ticket into my body. wooohooo!

The ticket came wrapped in Napolean Dynamite Themed paper, with this apt slogan at the top:

  17. themanatee Says:

maybe Phish will throw down a huge rivertrance at the benefit?!

  18. guitarpicker420! Says:

I’m so embarrased by my score, I don’t even want to tell folks what my real name is.

  19. Henry Says:

Miner, you need to make a Ten Tunes download with those tracks. I don’t have a few of them.

  20. Jtran Says:

    gp420 is Matt P 🙂

  21. Robear Says:

T-Shirt / Sticker idea for the site:

    “Mr. Miner’s Phishthoughts” -front

“No stone left unturned” – back

lurkers clean house on the trivia.

  22. Bad Nirvana Cover Band Says:

    I’m sick of ‘Tweezer’ too.

  23. Robear Says:

I remember trying to balance hitting GD and Phish shows throughout summer ’95. Missed Mud Island, but remember thinking it would be a throw down, based on name of venue and location.

Might have to download that one tonight.

  24. Mitch Says:

Robear, it should say “no turn left unstoned”

I wish i had the time yesterday to actually listen to those type 2 jams so i could play the trivia game and get my name on the wall of fame. maybe i’ll mix them up this weekend and give it a shot.

  25. Robear Says:

yeah, what mitch said. no coffee, no bane yet. just this mind melting 11/23/94 ‘Tweezer’
