Mud Island

Taking this week’s “Jam of the Day” theme right through “Weekend Nuggets,” this installment is all about ‘Tweezers.” This Memphis show from Summer ’95 contains the “Mud Island Tweezer,” one of the most extended and iconic explorations of the song in their career. At a time when the band continued pushing boundaries of jam-length and abstraction, this “Tweezer” clocked in at over 50 minutes, but when listening, boredom never comes into play. One of the most famous versions taboot, if you haven’t heard this, clear an hour of your time, sit back, and relax. Phish dropped one for the record books on the banks of the Mississippi.

I: Don’t You Wanna Go, Gumbo, NICU, Mound, Cavern, Possum, All Things Reconsidered, Amazing Grace*, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Spock’s Brain, Split Open and Melt

II: 2001 > Poor Heart, Tweezer > Acoustic Army, While My Guitar Gently Weeps

E: Simple, Rocky Top, Tweezer Reprise

Type II Trivia Results: With little competition on day 2, “Rippin'” Ross Bellenoit ran away with this contest with a remarkable 26 out of 30 points! Identifying every track and only missing a couple specific dates – what I thought was most impressive is that he only missed one year out of ten. By blowing away the competition, Ross wins his choice of CD: Trey’s TAB at the Tabernacle or Mike’s Moss. Kudos, Ross! Jeff D. put in a  a noble effort, nailing half the selections, while Brad P. rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. The entire results  and answers are below. (If your name is not listed, it is because you scored no points. Better luck next time.) Thanks for playing!

  1. Ross B. – 26 pts
  2. Jeff D. – 15
  3. Brad P. – 11
  4. Ethan W. – 8
  5. Andrew B, Lex P – tied w/4
  6. Dave L, Ryan B, George – tied w/3
  7. Dagan S, Chris – tied w/2
  8. Matt P, Rick D – tied w/1

the spreadsheet has a remastered version, sounds pretty good to these ears, literally just dl’ed it like a week ago

  3. Jtran Says:

Paul Shapera’s remaster is the best thing I’ve heard. That show is beyond due for an upgrade.

  4. ThePigSong Says:

hmm – I never made it to Indy this summer… so you must be mistaking me with another BBer

    or

is there an alter-ego PigSong that I am not aware of?

  5. Mr.Palmer Says:

@ Pig- enjoy Panic tonight. They are a good psych/southern rock band. Drink a few bourbons so you fit in, and your good to go… Herring is a monster. He’s almost too overpowering at times.

  6. Jtran Says:

    @pigsong

Sorry I’m sucking at explaining the situation. I was referring to the midwesterners in general that I talked to. I’d never been to the midwest before. This is my summary of our discussion:

You: whaddaya’ll think, I’m from the midwest
Me: that sounds southern, when I was in the midwest people sounded sotuhern to me
    Me: make comment
    You: confusion
    Me: try to explain
    You: confusion
    Me: explained?

  19. Lycanthropist Says:

    Gracias Mr. P!

  20. Jtran Says:

14 minutes into Went DWD, They could’ve gone into Saw It Again I think

  21. Mr.Palmer Says:

Not a big fan of I Saw it Again. Never have been, the MPP version had me reconsider a little bit. Rather hear 20 Years Later honestly.

  22. Jtran Says:

It’s always grabbed me for some reason. First heard it on the Live in Vegas DVD (which I purchased well before I knew next to anything about the band, probably to be cool in early HS..yes, that works in VT 🙂 )

Never really searched for versions of the song, always knew it because it’s so repetitive and from the DVD, honestly almost forgot about it until it was dropped at MPP. That set was what made me realize why people go on tour, you can ask GD, I texted him telling him about the Piper hose going down.

  23. Mr.Palmer Says:

Alright, i gotta run. Heading into NYC tonight. Good friend’s last night in NY, moving to Zurich in the morning. Gonna be a painful sunday morning for this guy.

Mitch- give a shout if your around. We will be in Tribeca.

  24. jtran Says:

Now im down in tribeca yea im down in brooklyn

  25. halcyon Says:

Whats happening everyone. Hope everyone is enjoying this lovely day. Was going to go to Furthur tonite and go on a ticket hunt, but decided to be responsible and save money.

Good News is that my slf has figured I would already be putting in for a show or two for the New Years run which I wasn’t. Looks like I am putting in for a show. Chances are it will be the 12/30 show as we will be in the NY area. Then again, might put in for all shows.

Giants have a big game tomorrow against the Titans. They stunk it up good last week.
