More Type II Trivia

11.20.09 (W.Rogell)

Last week’s contest seemed to be fun for the whole family, so let’s get in one more round before tour starts next week! The rules, re-posted from last week, are as follows:

Phish’s jamming has often been described in layman’s terms as ‘type I’ (contained jamming that adheres to song structures and chord progressions) and ‘type II’ (open jamming that leaves any semblance of the song it came from). Today’s game centers on Phish’s open jamming. Below are ten audio clips – each a few minutes long, and here is the task. You can gain 3 points per audio clip – 1 for identifying the year, 1 for identifying the song, and 1 for identifying the date – for a total of 30 possible points. The winner will win their choice of a “TAB and the Tabernacle” CD or Mike Gordon’s “Moss,” to be delivered in the near future. Please email your entries with ten numbered lines, one for each guess. All entries must be emailed to by 7 pm pacific on Friday (tomorrow) night. If multiple entries nail a perfect score, the earlier entry will take the prize. Without further ado, here are the audio clips. Good Luck!

He’s got a clue now at least. Awesome first show for him

  2. Jtran Says:

Just saw KP has a remaster. Gonna try that out first, gotta support the BB.

  3. Kevin Says:

Firing up 12/30/97 for the first time in a decade. Here we go…

  4. kayatosh Says:

funny you mention 12.30.2009 boogie lope (which i viewed more as a battle of wills. palpable tension makes for a $$ mashup).

pretty sure trey had previously quoted boogie on in a lope. 7.25.99 set II lope, i believe. will listen now to confirm. nothing like the boogie lope, though.

  5. kayatosh Says:

woops. boogie on quoted in 7.25.99 YEM, according to

  6. Jtran Says:

“fresh” ears, awesome. Enjoy it, one of my favorites.

  7. KWL Says:

    gotta support the BB.

@jtran: i heard that sentence in this voice:

  8. kayatosh Says:

7.25.99 lope may not have the boogie on tease, but it is straight up $$$. out of the box lope.

  9. kayatosh Says:

    we’re good.

  10. Kevin Says:

I definitely will. I feel like I’m two songs in, and already feel like I’m getting reacquainted with an old friend.

  11. voopa Says:

kaya I think there is an earlier Boogielope, and I believe it is from 99.

  12. kayatosh Says:

i have found my favorite lope

if i was the pimpin kind, i’d take this 7.25.99 lope out on the track and clean up.

  13. kayatosh Says:

so miami 2009 was son of boogielope?

  14. Jtran Says:

    Haha KWL, nice.

Playing this Boogie On softly in the background, planning on listening to the show at work tomorrow..don’t want to spoil it too much (although I’ve heard it once or twice before).

I almost like the first set of 12/30/97 more than set II. I guess two equally great sets is what makes an all-timer…

  15. kayatosh Says:

    7.25.99 suzy also $$$. page

  16. kayatosh Says:

    if you like looops.

  17. kayatosh Says:

and a solid I Wish quote

  18. KWL Says:

is there a program people use to make zipped folders?

i know, this is a n00b question, but i just zipped a 2.3 gig folder…….. into a 2.1 gig folder. is it me, or shouldn’t that be a tiny bit smaller

  19. kayatosh Says:

just had a $$$ snack — suzie’s Kamut puffed cakes. sweetened with agave. from belgium. 9grams, 1gram of which is protein. nice.

  20. sumodie Says:

What’s a passing score on this Type II Trivia test? 1.0 maybe?

Once more these tidbits gnaw at my brain with no break through aha moment

I figure I can get a better score by declaring #1-5 from ’98, #6-10 from ’99 and guessing Tweezer & Oswego for all than by trying to ID each one

  21. kayatosh Says:

night yall. got to rest up. little one has no school tomorrow.

  22. halcyon Says:

Try checking your compression ratio. You should be able to determine what ratio contents should be compressed at.

  23. Kevin Says:

I use 7zip — it’s free, and it can handle every type of compression I’ve ever thrown at it.

  24. halcyon Says:

does anyone have the xtranormal couch tour video link? It was done shortly after the Jones Beach shows?

  25. jdub Says:

just a late night check in. How goes it this evening?

I like your strategy Sumo. I give you two points for those guesses. These 10 seem more familiar to me for some reason. No time to do any investigative research and try to get get lucky while exploring new (to me) phish.

I have started an internal countdown for Broomfield. I. Can’t. Wait. Was feeling guilty leaving wife and kids at home but got another earnest approval from the wife today, pretty much made my day. That and going for a bike ride with my son. Who happens to be named Caleb.
