A Festi Set

Amounting to an extended warm up for fall tour, Phish played the ultimate festival set in Austin last night that featured a smattering of songs and little creative improv. Staying wholly within the box for the indie festival, the only surprise came in the middle of “Harry Hood’s” jam when the band smoothly segued into “Light” – the biggest and brightest piece in their repertoire right now. But for the first time in memory, Phish didn’t jam the song, ending with its lyrical refrain. This represented the unifying theme of the band’s Austin appearance – no jams. Sounding perfectly proficient the entire night, particularly strong playing came in “Chalk Dust,” “Rock and Roll > 2001,” and “Harry Hood,” but all in all, this was a big pay day for the band and not much else. While I’m sure they had fun headlining a major festival, Phish played the most straight forward show possible with no risks whatsoever, making the night a non-factor for the many fans who didn’t attend – including myself. Even Phish didn’t list Austin City Limits as part of their Fall Tour on their website, because tour starts for real on Sunday. Broomfield awaits…

    nice words posternutbag. I was in austin for acl in 03? or something for WSP. It was a dustbowl! Nice to hear the grass was immaculate. I remember it being so hot that i had my shirt off by 9am.

    Sounds good, guys…about what we expected from last night but I think it’s really hard for the band to carry their ‘Phishy’ vibe into a Festival that isn’t theirs, so the fact that it was promising and fun sounds like we’re in for some facial destruction.

    On a seperate note, this guy made my morning:

    phones’ a crapshoot – I’ve never had luck. I always do pretty well w/ the online thing. In these situations – if you get in right away, and get the captcha on first read, you’re in. If you think “WTF does that say?” even for a second, you’re screwed.

    no pressure tho 😉

    @Dude Agreed Halloween > NYE
    wouldn’t call it over rated, but more a blow out, were Halloween tends to be more focused.

    Curious to see how the 1/1/11 show pans out. Throwing a monkey wrench into the equation this year. I agree about NYE being a bit over rated. You do get 3 sets though. ’98 NYE was pretty bad ass as well. That whole 4 night run was the titties though. Hard to pick out a favorite.

    set up a ticketmaster account now AJ

    put in all your card info

  16. Mr.Palmer Says:

    AJ- set up an account before hand with billing and shipping info including CC number. Saves you a lot of time if you get through. This is a must IMO.

  17. BeantownBoy Says:

    ^ what AW said, it is crucial to have a TM account setup ahead of time. Makes the process a lot quicker.
