Weekend Nuggets: Mullins Center

10.23.10 - Amherst (Ryan Gilbertie)

These weekend’s shows from Amherst were split down the middle. Phish brought a legitimate smoker on Saturday night and a  bona fide snoozefest on Sunday. Coming off three special shows in Augusta, Utica, and Providence, however, these shows just didn’t elevate in the same way. The first night has plenty of engaging jamming in “Tweezer,” Disease > My Friend > Caspian > Halfway to the Moon > Boogie On,” and  set-ending sequence – “Piper > Hood, YEM.” But aside from the first-set “Stash,” Sunday never really got off the ground. The  old-school first set would have been fine had there been any action in the second. But there wasn’t. When a second set’s highlight is “Roggae > Taste” you know something strange is afoot at the Circle K. Another smoking “Bowie” could do nothing to salvage this long-lost second half. But the band popped right back in Manchester like nothing had happened.

  1. Spasm Waiter Says:

Speaking of folks who have played a lot of shows. Just read that The Radiators have played over 3500 shows. They are either about to play their last or just played their last show.

  2. plord Says:

That’s a lot of mediocre Nola jams, right there.

I’m sorry, the Rads have always left me cold except for one NYE show, and that was 100% the L not the band.

  3. Little Buddy Says:

My 2 yr old loves Sugar Shack. Blasting it on the home system right now while he gets his boogie on. Sugar Shack might be the only Phish song for which I overwhelmingly prefer the studio version to any live one.

  4. Spasm Waiter Says:

Not a Rads fan either. My buddy loves em. They are old.

  5. Spasm Waiter Says:

James Harrison getting more bad calls…

  6. Spasm Waiter Says:

Sound slike Furthur was sweet last night.

  9. Spasm Waiter Says:

Wish I’d come in for that one. I am saving my brownie points for Phish, not that I have tix but I am going to get myself to at least one holiday show and hopefully 2.

  10. Mr.Palmer Says:

  12. sumodie Says:

Starting to think seriously again about a Liquid Time sign for Woosta -I’ve got perfect seats from which to flash that sign both nights

Time to finish off 8/20/93 while splitting wood -the famed Antelope was pretty cool, not sure it’d make my epic list though

  13. Mr.Palmer Says:

thanks for the Furthur Wolfie! Haven’t heard a note of their stuff in almost a year. Looking forward to hearing the improvement. 80 shows in a year is serious stuff for those two old men. Impressive.

  14. Robear Says:

man sumo, i need to chop some wood too.

  15. Spasm Waiter Says:

He does have a flair for the dramatic.

  16. Jtran Says:

    Nice comeback Jets

    Bomb Factory Tweezer
    Pats Colts
    Eagles Giants
    MLS Cup

    Nice little evening

  17. Jtran Says:

nice comeback/way to almost blow that one

  18. garretc Says:

Haha, listening to one of Phish’s Bridge School Benefit sets today, because it’s an acoustic kind of day I guess, and it’s awesome hearing the non-Phish crowd deal with Freebird…

Bet they didn’t see that one coming!

  19. garretc Says:

The perfect soundtrack to answering questions about mortgage backed securities!

    I guess…

  20. BingosBrother Says:

Did this exact page happen last year or am I having out of control deja vu?

  21. EL Duderino Says:

All Furthur sbd’s are up in Lossless @ the Noid

  22. garretc Says:

Probably not, cause I haven’t listened to the Bridge School shows before, so I wouldn’t have said that…

I think you’re just losing your mind, quite frankly.

If you were sane, would this post suddenly start discussing gerbils? Uh oh, it just did start discussing gerbils, oh dear…

  23. sumodie Says:

@garretc: lol, 8/20/93 Freebird began on my pod just as I read your comment

  24. sumodie Says:

also just realized where Spasm Waiter got his name (that’s right, don’t ever ask me to quote phish lyrics)

  25. Gavinsdad Says:

Taco nite with fam and in laws. Goal: kids in bed pre game. Tension is already palpable. Go Birds!

And go Phish. Wonder if Trey will be playing at 70? A good handful of the rock elite clearly met the devil at the cross roads.
