Weekend Nuggets: Mullins Center

10.23.10 - Amherst (Ryan Gilbertie)

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

These weekend’s shows from Amherst were split down the middle. Phish brought a legitimate smoker on Saturday night and a  bona fide snoozefest on Sunday. Coming off three special shows in Augusta, Utica, and Providence, however, these shows just didn’t elevate in the same way. The first night has plenty of engaging jamming in “Tweezer,” Disease > My Friend > Caspian > Halfway to the Moon > Boogie On,” and  set-ending sequence – “Piper > Hood, YEM.” But aside from the first-set “Stash,” Sunday never really got off the ground. The  old-school first set would have been fine had there been any action in the second. But there wasn’t. When a second set’s highlight is “Roggae > Taste” you know something strange is afoot at the Circle K. Another smoking “Bowie” could do nothing to salvage this long-lost second half. But the band popped right back in Manchester like nothing had happened.

ya gotta love Alumni Blues>Letter to Jimmy Page>Alumni Blues

the two versions this year at Camden and then at jamchester are both awesome!

    🙂

    @Gdad

I’m spinning that Om for the second time right now, cool stuff! Led me to Sleep, so I’ve heard one of their albums, which was pretty cool, but I’ve been saving Dopesmoker for a special occasion some time…

  3. Mr.Palmer Says:

I’ll be super shocked ( and excited) is the Giants pull it out tonight. It pains me to say it being a huge Giants fan. Philly has that mojo working right now. Giants have to force Vick to make mistakes early or knock him out of the game. The have the ability to do either. Hopefully the Giants makeshift o-line protects Eli as well. I hope its a great game.

  4. Lycanthropist Says:

    hey bb

    whats shakin

  5. garretc Says:

Not much Lycan. My day’s setlist featured an extremely brief “Snowflakes” tease, but other than that…

  6. phoammhead Says:

    hey lycan – wassup, bro!

i was thinking about what other bust outs are possible going forward . . .

  7. Lycanthropist Says:

not much just relaxin after a long weekend

Thurs: Final TSU show with Cody
Fri: Prep for wife’s Iron Pour
    Sat: Iron Pour
    Sun: Work > Mimosas

  8. Lycanthropist Says:

currently perusing 11-12-10 TSU first set..

this is the second to last show
    second show with new drummer
    second set failed on recording.

    weird circle of seconds there.

hope to get aforementioned last show (11.18.10) soon.

will upload 11.12.10 if anyone is interested.

  9. garretc Says:

    Love Trey’s fake-outs in this 9/22/99 2001.

“Slide down into the theme…? Just kidding! This time? Nope!”

  10. Dr. Pronoia Says:

Thanks for uploading that furthur Wolfman’s!

  11. garretc Says:

Actually, I love this 2001 period.

    Ear candy, yo!

  12. BrandonKayda Says:

    @Lycan

    I’ll take 11.12 TSU, if you don’t mind 😀

Glad to hear the shows went well

What’s up BB. Put my 7 y.o. in the burly and went out for a 45 min bike ride. It was hovering around freezing. Have you seen my legs? I can’t really figure out where they are. I mean, I can see them, it’s just…where are they? I’m not going to be making any quick moves for the next hour or so, I reckon.

This after I tried to rake today and opened a blister on my fretting hand after maybe an hour. Disastrous for my mood, hence the frigid bike ride. Had to take my anger out on *something*.

Raking accompanied by Island Tour Providence 4/4 set II. Gotta stick with the classics for chores. And now that I look at timing, I apparently raked for about 1:04 because Lizards was just starting when I had to stop and deal with my hand.

  15. garretc Says:

Ahh, thanks sumo, I was looking for that the other day!

  16. Gavinsdad Says:

@Garretc: very cool on the Om. If you’ve researched you know that Om is/was two thirds of Sleep, but the bands couldnt be more different. Om is obviously meditative and spiritual and very influenced by esoteric religious studies and history. Sleep is a brutal attack, but somehow sublime in their might IMO. I really dig em both. Both are good sesh bands.

@Vegas – much obliged on the furthur…had to fwd to a. Couple ppl we went to the show with.

  17. garretc Says:

Man, 9/22/99 is hot straight through!

Giving New Mexico the kick down!

  18. EL Duderino Says:

“Hopefully the Giants makeshift o-line protects Eli as well.”-Palmer

This, along with the Jeckle and Hyde of Eli are very similar to the Bears and Cutler, except your guy has a SB ring.

I hate what Vick did, but he paid his price and it’s hard not to be a fan of what Vick is doing on and off the field right now.
The Eagles may be the most dangerous team in the NFL this year.

  19. Robear Says:

another classic Colts v Pats game, with near second half meltdown, ferverish comeback and all.

i’m thinking the New Year’s run will elevate the ’10 sound in the same way Miami elevated the ’09 sound 😛

  20. tba Says:

Umm the second night was a snoozefest? maybe I’m an old man, or we are all getting sp0iled. The Free_lizards was clearly the highlight IMHO, plus the frankly stellar tight playing during Taste, try that song in real life not easy kidz.

Miner had to give my opinion, still luv yah man, thanks for all you do, although your pic about ‘Ween AC showed how sick my seats were that i had to pass on to deal with a family crisis, and i only missed my third fave album, seriously white and Quad are two and one-Quad=one, and i at least thought what are thye chances-thinking Zappa or Crimson or some artry shit would be the call, and to be fair really could not put my third fave album up at the time, but WFC is as good as it gets. The Dixie Chicken, to me with the slow down piano slowdown, horn addition, all the lines sung perfectly, was my fave, and I hope they add it to the regular rotataion.

OK next year, my pick is Nirvana Nevermind or whatever it’s called with Jack White singing-sound a lot like Cobain when he wants and guy can rip. appetite for destruction i could deal with. Bottom line there are many 70’s albums arguable better, and my mind wouild rather see, but a little love for the newer bands, see how old i ma when a 20 year or so album is :newer.: would be cool. Yes Phish is the best of my generation, and right now Trey is the best living guitarist, he’s on fire, all this is true.

Finally the scratchy stuff Trey is doing at the start of Tweezer and Hood, is the sickest thing i’ve heard out of him in a while in terms of N ORIGINAL ADAPTATION, LIKE THE oRLANDO sTASH, OR 98 2001 mIKES GORGE, sorry hit caps by mistake. Plus now the 2 minute cover segues seem to be back, like the zep tweezer, which IMHO due to the legendary songs is up their with worcester wipeout, barcelone Mule-Blister, or Bomb factory Tweezer, shows phish is 100 and 50% back :<) Good times folks.

PS Miner for prez 2012, Phish Party

  21. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

@garretc – thats probably my fav 2001 ever, as of like 3 days ago when i listened to it high as balls while rollerblading trhough the city. honestly, they exhibit full mastery of their “current” (99-00) style throughout that psychedelic adventure. trey rips it up reaching full shreding at certain points while maintining the right level of subtlety throughout the rest of it. page has several moments (minutes) of genius as well.

lets be sure to blast that one sometime while we bane at my place during the msg run

  22. Jtran Says:

    9/22 bane blast

    That sounds fun

  23. garretc Says:

    Hell yeah @purple!

That’s always the weirdest thing about going to Phish shows:

hanging out with people that like Phish.

I always forget that that’s something that can happen!

  24. halcyon Says:

Many great reviews of furthur pouring in ….. thanks for the link wolfman!

    LETS GO GIANTS!

  25. fee4zy Says:

Saw Furthur 7-29-10 at the Nokia in Times Square. Was very impressed. One of the better shows from the old guys. It was to make up for Bobby’s acid induced retardation at the show the night before.

I hope that Phish is still touring in 20 years. I’m hoping to catch more shows as the kids get older. Right now at 5 and 6, I’m really limited to how much I can get away. I have dreams of ditching them at camp grandma’s for a month in the summer and touring the east coast like in college. Ahh, those were the days.
